TIN-: State! Supreme Court was to have met the 2?ch, it is presumed, to decide the County Superintendents' case appealed from this county, but the iliness of Judge McCabe prevented. The court is called for Friday, when the case *viJl probably come up and be decided. It is well to settle the case before next Monday, as that is the day appointed for the trustees to elect new Superintendents. We are inclined to think the law will be held constitutional and all right.

The accidental killing of his mother by John Wren nick at Morristown Tuesday calls up the iacc that the law against carrying deadly weapons is not enforced. Too many young men carry revolvers and when not being carried they are left around the house and many a distressing accident occurs. When men are brought before Justices and Mayors charged with carrying deadly weapons they should receive the limit of the law, which runs to a $300 fine.. Police officers should also be prompt to apprehend all people carrying such weapons

What Should be Taugtit5 In our Public Schools. The object in providing schools for children at the public expense, is to give the rising generation a3 much knowledge as may be useful to them in after life.

Another leading object is to train them in morals and manners, and to accustom them to discipline, and still another, is to indirectly give support to the secuxity of life, person and property.

The instruction should be elementary, but it should embrace as many departments of knowledge as possible. To confine it to reading, writing and arithmetic, may le dictated by parsimony, but not by wisdom. To extend it to the elements of grammar, and a few leading facts about geography is not enough.

The principles of natural philosophy, especially that relating to dynamic forces, should be taught. The laws of health, the more important facts in physiology, should form part of the course. Enough of astronomy should be given to make the youth familiar wi'h the various stars, the course of the planets and the general system of the universe.

Minerology is not only a pleasing study, but one calculated to be useful in after life. Music is a necessity in all mental training. In short the child should be given as much rudimentary knowledge us possible.

Much of this may be wasted, it is said. Possibly. None can tell the bent of the child's mind, nor in what department of industry it may fiud the best field for activity in after years. But these very studies will assist to develop the latent special powers, and thus to. del ermine the child's future.

It is to the hit rest of the State that the capacity of each ciiizen should be led into the proper channel, for this increases the productive energy and general prospeiity of the country, aud wherever there is a decided tendency to any particular pursuit, not a momentary fancy, but what proves to be au irresistible leaning, then the school should provide an extended course of instruction in all knowledge connected with it.

Theteudency of the ago is to extend the curriculum of instruction rather than to limit it. and it is a praiseworthy disposition of the popular mind. The standard of knowledge is lar higher than it was a hundred years since, and the amount of elementary instruction should be raised in accordance with that fact. "We tax ourselves cheerfully in order that even the poorest may not grow up in ignorance.

Let us have the full benefit of the money we spend, iiive the children all the knowledge the system of teaching can impart, and thus give the humblest chance duriug their life to rise higher in the social seal ?, and develop in the right direction whatever talent they may naturally possess.
