MINNIE R/mLliMS,
One of Holmes' Alleged tims, Heard From.
Vic-
IS REPORTED ALIVE AND WELL.
Holmes Said He Knew His Story That He Did Not Kill tlie Girl Would lie Confirmed—He I* Sorry She Has Made Herself So Public—Minnie May Appear on the Scene at Any Time.
PHILADELPHIA,
Aug.
21.—"W.
PROVIDENCE, R. I., Aug. 19, 1895.
W. A. Shoemaker, Attorney, Philadelphia: Report that I was murdered, absurd. Am alive and well.
MIXXIE R. WILLIAMS.
When the message was shown to Holmes, he said excitedly: "I knew my story that I did not kill the girl would be confirmed."
He brushed tears from his eyes. "I am sorry, however, that she has made herself so public by telegraphing. She might as well have written."
Then Holmes reiterated the statement that he has made so often that the last time lie saw Minnie Williams was when he left her at Toronto with the Pietzel children. The prisoner has every confidence that Minnie Williams is the best friend he lias and feels assured that the telegram that was received hero yesterday was sent by her
for the purpose of showing loyalty to
him. Attorney W. A. Capps, the Fort Worth attorney, who has "been liere in the interest of the Texas people who are trying to prosecute Holmes, was on his way ro take a train for New York when told that Minnie Williams had been reported alive. He said: "I never thought she was dead. The Fort Worth people think she is alive, but it seems mighty hard to locate her. She may be somewhere near Boston. She has many friends there. I wouldn't be surprised if the telegram you say has been received from her is correct.
There the conversation was abruptly terminated by Mr.
Cuppa
having to
rush off to catch the New York express. Assistant District Attorney Barlow would not say whether he thought the telegram was genuine or false. He admitted, however, that he would not be astonished if Minnie Williams appeared on the scene at any time.
Lawyer Shoemaker is investigating the telegram which came over the wires of the Western Union Telegraph company.
Asked
as to his belief in its gen
uineness, he replied: "It may, or may not be. My opinion, however, is that it was sent by Minnie Williams. Holmes told me yesterday afternoon that he supposed the girl has just arrived from London, and perhaps was induced to send the message to some of liis friends. "It is more than likely that Minnie "Williams sent the message from Providence and then hurriedly left the town. She has always, you know, had a particular fondness for Boston, and, besides, she has many fritnds in that city. She may have been on her way there when she telegraphed me."

Newspaper Change at. (Ireensburg:.
GKHENKUUKG, IncL, Aug. 21.—An important change in newspaper circles was made here yesterday, Allen W. Clark selling a half interest in The New Era to Thomas N. Locke, for four years with the Columbus Herald. Mr. Locke will be business manager of the new firm, while Mr. Clark will continue to write free silver editorials. Tne business of the daily and weekly editions of The New Era has grown so large of late years that it became necessary to divide work and responsibilities.
