A si"j:.u:c']' that should appeal to the minds of nil citizens is the subject of schools. In them our childreu are prepared for their life's work, and the importance of school life and work cannot be over estimated. The development of the child should be three-fold—physical, mental and moral. While all are of great importance, we desire to call particular attention at this time to the pliysica! care and growth of the children. It is a well known fact that our present school facilities here in Greenfield are utterly inadequate to properly care for Ihe number of children of the city and adjacent country that are attached here for school purposes. On account of the crowded condition of some of the rooms it is impossible to secure proper heating and ventilating. It is also impossible for all to have the proper light. With a sufficient number of buildings and additional rooms all can be cared for as they should be. With the new school building, which is now a sure go, all our children can be properly cared for. There may bo some few object to a new building at this time on account of the tax, "but a city should never allow a few thousand dollars to stand in the way of giving the children—all the children—the best possible advantages, so that with a sound and well-cultivated mind in a sound body they may go forth from the public schools of Greenfield thoroughly equipped and prepared for the battle of life. The new school building will be a source of pride and rejoicing in the course of a few months, and with pride will be pointed out to all visitors. Let the building be properly located and pushed to completion as rapidly as possible.

DeafnesH Cannot lit Cured

by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only OLC way to cure deafness, «nd that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflamation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.

We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free.

After supper all proceeded to the parlor where an interesting literary program was rendered. The club is becoming one of the solid institutions [of our community and will result in much good. Rutherford's American Authors was adopted for club study for nexc year.

H. X, Thompson deserves the medal. Last week he laid his best ccat^and vest' on the bed and drew oil a light 'duster' and went out to hitch to his new buggy. When he bad hitched up he drove to Sheridan, Ind. before he discovered that he was minus a coat and vest. He is willing to treat the editor of the REPUBLICAN if he will keep as quiet as the nature of the matter will allow.

Mrs. L. C. Pickle on returning to her home the other day found a healthy looking tramp in the kitchen searching for something which he evidently had not lost. The manner in which Mrs. Pickle dismissed him indicates that she is no coward.

James Crossley, of Colorado, arrived at our town today (Tuesday) and will remain about six weeks.

Mrs. Summers, of Windfall, and her sister, of Lawrence, were the guests of L. C. Pickle aud family last Thursday.

Clarence Luse is erecting a hennery. Many of our fanners have completed their corn planting.

Milton Murphy's baby has been quite sick, but is getting better. Horse racing is the order of the day on our streets of a Sunday evening. If any one has stock that they want tried just trat them out. Shame!

We have quite a flourishing business house in the northeast part of our town, or at least it seemed to do a flourishing business last Sunday.

Rev. Ballard Ensminger will preach here next Saturday night and Sunday. Drs. Lucas and,'Glass seem to be doing bt good business

Mr. ('oivn., ihe Ireusiiri'r ot X'W Yorkstate, holds the highest position of purely financial responsibility which it is possible for a citizen of this country to be elected.

Iu many respects the office is second only to that of the threat United S'ntis official whose si cretary himself has jut publicly recommended Paine's celery compound.

Xovv there comes a letter of ihe Kin.e character from Treasurer Colvin In the history of. the most iemarkable remedy this centairy ha yet seen the fact that the ablest and most influential persons in the country ami the most, progressive physicians, were the fissi to perceive the extraordinary worthof Paiue's celery compound, is very significant.

The face that today this remedy is more widely recommended, by grateful people iu every walk of life, than all the other remedies in the world together, is not astonishing. It makes people well!

There have appeired recently published testimonials of Mr. Carlisle's private secretary, of ex-Minister to Austria Francis, of Mayor McShane, of Montreal, of Miss Mable Jeuness,GfJPresideut, Cook of the National teachers' association, of Gen. Macauley and of scores of others equally responsible women and men. The "plain people" by thousands in every state in the uuion have testified to the merits of the compound.

Hon. Addison B. Colvin, whose likeness is given above, who was elected treasurer of New York statelast fall was born in 1858 in Glen Falls, N. Y. where he was educated in the public schools and where he has since resided. His successful career is known to all well-informed persons.

Writing to the proprietors of Paine's celery compound on July 12 last he said: "I beg to advise you that three or four years ago, when I was sulEerring seveiely with a nervous difficulty caused by too close attention to business. Xo eight-hour or ten hour laws have ever been devised to protect such hard worked aud over worked men against themselves.

Very many are tied to their office desks, bent over books and papers for hours, iu titter defiance of the simplest requirements of health. The steady drain 011 the store of nervous energy at length shows itself in repeated headaches, neuralgia twinges, rheumatic pains, uurefreshiug sleep and a lovvness of spirits and strength.

In all these cases there is urgent need I of restoring the nervous vis_»»r that has been heedlessly squandoied. Ju.-.t why the great body of really capible physiciaus have had the greatest, confidence from the first iu ordering Paine's celery compound in these cases of reduced nerve vigor and bodily strength is not only because of the immediate good results that follow, but because this great modern remedy is prepared from the formula of the ablest reputed scientist and practitioner in medicine, Prof. Edward E. Phelps, LL D, of Dartmouth college.

There are hundreds of men and women successful in their work for every one who is successful in keeping well. In many instances a fraction of care and earnestness with which they attend to their business devoted to getting well would make them strong and well.

To quickly fill the shrunken arteries and uns with ruddy blood and to refresh the diausted nerves is the task that Paine's celery compound at once sets at work to accomplish. It takes but a short time with a careful employment of this great nerve food to call a halt to wasting diseases and to disorders of the important

Very siumvly ous weakness. yours, A. B. Cof.vix It. is perhaps, vague to most persons' "State Treasurer." mind just what "regulating aud strength-

euing the nerves" really means.

i.

X'o parts of the body undergo suchrapid changes as the tissues. After exertion the brain aud nerve demand the promptest repair possible. The propers material must be speedily and richly brought lv the bleod to ensure the healthy-? working of these delicate parts. It is when the vigor of the body is so reduced that the nervous tissues canuot extract1'these needed elements from the blood,at and when the pale, watery blood can furnish but a scanty supply of building material, that the strength fails, -sleep becomes broken and unrefreshiug, depression seizes the mind aud a general feeling of ill-being is the sure forerunner of the breaking dowu of some special organ, liver, kidneys, heart, brain or stomach.

Paine's celery compound regulates aud strengthens the nerves, which govern and give, tone to every part of the body.

The tiniest branchings of the nerves everywhere accompany aud work iu liar--mony with the maivelous network of blood vessels, so that wherever a pin prick starts a drop of blood, a sharp pain tells that a nerve has also suffered. Paiue's celery compound stores the blood vessels even to their minutest capillaries with fresh blood, full of life, aud builds up the worndown nerves, by bathing them, to their utmost filaments, in the rich, nourishing stream.

Tired mothers, worn out by the ceaseless care of large families, and fathers worried by business and responsibility, find just the refreshment to the nerves that they need so much. Overwrought brainworkers, teachers, scholars, young girls in stores and offices regain the sturdy appearance tf health in a short time by using this powerful nourishing agent, Paine's celery cotnpouud.
