PRESIDENT CLEVELAND is being persistently urged to call Congress in special session so that the income tax law may be remedied. A straight out repeal of the entire law is demanded rather than to let the bis land owners and rich coupon clippers oil scot free, wlii'e the mercantile, manufacturing and other business interests that go to make the wonderful business activity in this country are heavily taxed. The law should be amended so that it would reach the classes aimed at, the rich bond holders and land owners or be repealed. Let it be passed, however, in a way that will carry out the will of the people.

Steamer Warrimoo.

VICTORIA, B. C.. April 11. The steamship Warrimoo arrived yesterday eiiTi't days from Honolulu and 23 from Sydney-

Honolulu was very quiet. Queen Liliuokalani lias been given permission to walk anywhere in the 10-acre park surrounding the government buildings after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. She was not in good health, needing exercise. Ash ford, Marshall, Culick. Seward, and Piekai'd, the leading revolutionists ure all quite sick in jail, Aslifonl in particular, is in poor health.

The legislature will convene shortly, and one of vlie principal matters of business will be to authorize a sale of the Crown lands. The president has the act prepared, and will favor the small farmers.

Without- the slightest warning the volcano Ruapehu, near Auckland, New Zealand, suddenly broke out in an eruption Sunday, March 10. ejecting a tremendous column of steam many thousands of feet into the air. Afterward the steam was replaced by smoke and ashes, which continued to be belched forth all night. The steam is again ascending. It is believed that, the crater lake on the summit is being turned into solfatara or volcanic vent-, emitting sulphurous muriatic and acid vapors or gases. Ngrahoe is also unusually active. The sight is a magnificent one.

At Melbourne, on March 12, the unemployed held a massmeeting and adopted the resolutions urging the government to call parliament together at once to sanction reproductive works, so as to find work for the unemployed. A procession was formed and the men marched to the government offices, where a deputation interviewed the premier and submitted the resolution to his notice. Mr. Turner sympathized with the men and promised aid.

The Warrimoo brought back a number of Canadian emigrants, who went to Australia hoping to better themselves.

Hon. John Douglass left Thursday island wio Aiuatross, March 13, for Saba island, which was threatened with an attack from the famous Togra, the headhunting tribe of New Guinea natives.

The schooner Sir John Franklin, which arrived at Sydney March 15, from Nomea, sighted some floating deluisof a large vessel, evidently recently wrecked, when about 10U miles east of Point Danger.

TRAIN ROBBERS AT LIBERTY.

Tliey Overpower Their Guard and Kscape 3lat,t.ewjiii Insane Asylum.

NEW YORK, April 11.—A telephone message from thu Aluticwan insane asylum to the Associated Press states that Trainrobber Perry with live or six others, ovcrp. iweivd a watchman and succeeded in making their escape l'roin the premises.

Perry was the ringleader ol! the plot. They overpowered, bound and gagged a watchman and then made the best' of their way through the chapel of the insane asylum. The patients occupied different cells and it is a mystery to the management the way they succeeded in laying their plans.

From the chapel they made their way to the atric of tne building. From this attic they were easily able to scale one of the fences. Just as they were getting outside the walls they were discovered by an outside guard, who fired .several shots at them. It is known that the following inmates escaped: Oliver Curtis Perry, Syracuse Patrick Maguire of New York city, Michael O'Donnell of Brooklyn, Frank Davis of New York, John Quigley of Brooklyn.

The authorities at once gave the alarm and instituted a search for the escaped inmates. They have an idea that posisibly one of these men i.i concealed in the cliapel or in the attic in one of the buildings, as sounds were heard after the guard fired at those who succeeded in getting outside of the walls. The guard is positive that he saw at least three men running away, and four, including Perry are missing from their rooms.
