The Masonic celebration at Bainbridge on Thursday, June 2t, was a day long to be re membered by the citizens of that beautiful little town. Rarly in the morning the people from every direction began to pour in in wag. one, carriages, on borsebark. and every other shape known to ibis traveling age Tbvtrain left Cloverdale at 5 A. M., with twenty Masons. About one hundred tickets were sold at that station. At Greencastle, a large number of passengers were taken aboard, one

themselves well. Perhaps a more orderly and quiet assembly never mot together on any similar occasion. Nothing occurred during the day to mar the peace of any individual. There was a straw berry festival in the evening, which was well attended, and resulted in some prof-

it to the Fraternity.

The Crawfordsville Silver Band was in attendance and discoursed lively

strains of music.

In 1860 it passed into the hands of the two latter, by whom the busiuess was conducted until 1862, at which time A. B. Lyon disposed of his interest to Louis Weik, and removed to Kansas. Mr. Weik being a practical baker, it was resolved to erect a bakery, in connection with the grocery, which was done, and this has contributed in no small degree to the general business, which has grown until the proprietors have found the old building too small

THE LEVEL AND THE SQUARE

Wc meet upon the Level and wo part upon the Jfw/orr; What word* of precious meaning those words Mufonie are! Conm, let us contemplate them, they are worthy of a thought, With the highest, mid the lowest, and the rarest they aro fraught.

We meet upon the Level, though from every station come; Tho rich man from his mansion, and the poor intin from liis home; For the one must leave his wealth and state mitside tbe Mason's door, And the oilier finds his true respect upon tbe checkered tluor.

We part upon the Square, for the world must have its due; We mingle with tho multitude, a cold, unfriendly crow, But the influence of our gatherings in memory is green, And we long upon the Level to renew our happy scene.

There's a world where nil are equal—wo are hurrying towards it fast; Wo shall meet upon the Level there, when the gates of death are past; Wo shall stand before the Orient, and our Master will bo there To try the blocks wo offer by his own unerring Square,

We shall meet upon the Level there, but never tbonie depart; There s a Mansion—t is nil ready for each trusting, faithful heart— There s a Mansion mid a welcome—and a multitude is there, Who have met upon the Level, and been triedupon the Square.

Lot us meet upon the Level, then, while labor ing patient hero ; Let us meet, and let us labor, though the labor fie severe; Already in the Western Sky the signs bid us prepare To gather up our Working tools, and part tipon the Square !

There is a peculiar attraction which our institutions pose«s for the oppressed laboring class in Europe, aud it is a fact beyond dispute that the coudition of such of this class as manage to break away and get over here is greatly im-

proved.

We are of those that think this in flux of population will eventually be a benefit to this country after the proper process of assimilation has been effected ; and provided, always, a proper policy on the part of the General Government provides a home market for the increased production, consequent upon the increased number of producers. If, however, these people are convert cd, by a free trade policy, into consumers of foreign goods, foreign governments may lay aside all fear. The stream of migration will be effectually retarded. Wages will be reduced to a European standard, and the inducement which is now its chief stimulus will be, in a great measure, removed. — Scientific American.

Tbe crowd remained on the ground until late in the evening before returning to town, and everything passed off to the satisfaction of all. The citizens of Bainhridge displayed unbounded hospitality, for which they deaerve gr*nt praise. The train going north, was fullyone hoar late. The train south did not arrive at Greencastle until near eleven o'clock , but tbe cause of the delay we were unable to asrertain. We never saw asciviland peaceful a crowd together as that of yesterday. It speaks well for the morality of Bainbridge. McD. Greeneaslle, June 25, I: 60.

Adolph E, Borie resigned his position as Secretary of the Navy, Friday, and George M. Robeson, of New Jersey, formerly Attorney General of that State, was ■pYioiuted to suooaed Lira, Borie, it is said, felt compelled to resign by reason of multiplicity of private dutien.

Surveyor llcneral Babcock, of Kansas, in a letter to I'lesident (Irani, dated June 20, says Governor Harvey had visited in person all the cities where Indian enormities were recently commited, aud ascertained that more than thirty persons in all had been killed. Agent Hoag places the number at about twenty. At tho lime of the outbreak, four surveying parlies were in the field, but all returned. 'Two of them report that they saw no Indians. Tho third party say they were atacked by a small band, which fled after the surveying party had fired four or five shots. All tho surveying parties were frightened, and decline returning to the field at present. Tbe Indians are not combined, and do not intend to bring on a regular war There are several small bands scouring the country and intend to kill and plum der without taking too many chances. Settlers and trains are in great danger from these paties. General Schofield has comparatively few troops for so wide an extent of country. The Governor of Kansas has asked the I’resident for additional troops. If they can not he furnished him he has reques ted authority to raise a regiment of volunteers.

The public debt statement for June, will not be delayed to close up the business of the fiscal year, as is usual, but will be submitted promptly ou the 1st of July. It will show a reduction of about six millions. But the yearly statement, which will be got out toward the eud of July, after the returns of VVednesday night have been received from all sources, will improve on that by at least two millions. Tbe Secretary regards the financial situation as quite satisfactory. He has about twenty-eight millions of currency and ninety millions of gold on hand. A reduction of twenty, eight millions of dollars in the public debt during tho first four months ol General Grant s administration is a fact that it will be wull for the croakers to

consider.

A private letter from an eminent Englishman, standing high in the estioia tion of the Government, has been received, in which the writer says Mr. Gladstone and John Bright are strong supporters of Canadian independence.
