POETRY. From the United States' Literary Gazette. THE LAPSE OF TIME. Lament who will, in fruitless tears, The speed with which our moments fly: I sigh not over vanished years, But watch the years that hasten by. See how they come - a mingled crowd Of bright and dark, but rapid days; Beneath them, like a summer cloud, The wide world changes as I gaze. What! grieve that time has brought so soon The sober age of manhood on! As idly should I weep at noon To see the blush of morning gone.

Could 1 forego the hope that glow in prospect, like Elysian isles; And let the charming future go, With all her promises and smiles? The future! cruel were the power Whose doom could tear thee from my heart; Thou sweet'ner of the present hour! We cannot - no - we will not part. 0! leave me still the rapid flight That makes the hanging seasons gay, The grateful speed that brings the night, The swift and glad return of day. The month that touch with loveliest grace The little prattler at my knee, In whose arch eye and speaking face, New meaning every hour 1 see. The year that o'er each sister land Shall lift the country of my birth, And nurse her strength till she shall stand The pride and pattern of the earth; Till center commonwealths for aid Shall cling about her ample robe, And from her frown shall shrink, afraid, The crown'd oppressor of the globe. True, time will sear and blanch my brow; Well - I shall sit with ages men, And my good glass will tell me how A grisly beard become me then. And, should no foul dishonor lie Upon my head when I am gray, Love yet may search my fading eye, And smooth the path of my decay. Then haste thee, Time -- 'tis kindness all That heeds thy winged feet so fast; Thy pleasures stay not till they pall, And all thy pains are quickly past. Thous flyest and hearts' away our woes, And as thy shadowy train depart, The memory of sorrow grows A lighter burthen on the heart.

I had come to remain only 24 hours.

next morning I went to town, but returned in

the evening.and joined the company as if nothing had happened. Fabrius, who viewed the thing in the same light as I did, told me it would be impossible to discover the author of this trick; but by promising a ducat to a peasant girl, if she would tell me who sawed the plank, I succeeded. She pointed me out a young man, whose tongue I untied with another ducat, accompanied by menaces. He confessed to me that he had acted under the orders of a Mr. Demetrius, a Greek merchant, a man between 45 and 50 years of age, of an agreeable and jovial disposition, on whom the only mystification I ever played off, was outrivalling him in the good graces of Madame de Ka's femme de chambre, to whom he had taken a liking. In the whole course of my life

1 never fatigued my brain so much as upon this occasion, in endeavoring to invent some trick wi;h which to plague this cursed Greek. 1 was desirous it should be at least as extraordiuary and disagreeable as the one be had served me. The more 1 thought on the subject, the less likely I seemed to obtain the object of my wishes; till a passing funeral suggested

an idea to me that I lost no time in executing.

Towards midnight I repaired alone, armed with a cutlass to the churchyard, where I disinterred the newly buried body, and with

some difficulty cut off the arm at the shoulder

ronage of the friends of the institution to which

they belong and they flatter themselves, that the friends of the individuals composing the societies, will feel more than an ordinary interest in its success. lication of the proposed work, will be devoted to

public purposes - to the purchasing of libraries
