PLAY UPON NAMES.
The following ingenious and playful poetic
effusion, from the Concord, N. II. Register, is
too good to be lost. Those who recollect the names of the members of the Legislature, will recognize much wit and good humour in 'the
production. It require no ordinary 'effort of
poetical talent to weave so easily and hand
somely a long list of names into whole cloth,
without breaking a thread ot the discourse. J't. Watchman. A LAMENTATION', Written soon after the adjournment of the Vermont Legislature .Yov. t 82b'. Montpclier mourns her streets are still, Save when the street yarn ladies spin, And scarce astangers seen at Mann's, Or Campbell's or at Cotrells1 inn. The guardian of the people's rights it; llaveicne their work, gone home to prove And let the State-House stand, because BantuTn and Baily could not move it. But though the building stand secure, And long may stand the village boast. The villagers are call'd to mourn The comforts and the friends they've lost. Their Butlers gone, their Baker too. Their Clarks have lied as Ss-ijt as thought, Their Barbers left their chins unshavM, And even their Potter's gone to pot. Their Walkers nimbly walked away. Their Masons and their Smiths are still; Their Carpenter's lay down their tools, The honest Miller leaves his mill. Their skilful FiJur-irn is gone. With Bjtts to line ami .S; ear to strike, With him are tied the Finney tribe, Put more especially the Bike. The S-ca.i they deatly lov'J to pick, His down with plumage bright a? gold; Their Fhtrk has bounded o'er the hills. Their playful Lamb has broke his fold. The Xohle and the Young have gone, The Rich have left them to despair, Their Gay. their Best attire is lost, And not a Spencer left to wear. Their learned Proctor, pious Dean, .And holy Pahner. in their lurch, Have left their docks and left them too Without a Ttmole. Beit or Chur:h. And thofe who loved the mazy dance, Enjoy no mire the lively Ball, They've lot. aUo their pleasure-Zuyre, And miss their richly furnishM Hall. They once mull bonst a pleasant 'Hill, D'ightful llhodes, a charming Lane, A Warren,' Bri ?gc. and Shed and Barnes, That they in iv never see again. Their rrv.sf and their Woods are fellM, The Mvor who their farces led, Ha broken up his glittering Camp, And fiiendly Scot and French, are; fled. All's lot the men have lost their Crafts, They've lo-f their Ambler and their Wheeler, Jlae lot their Suel, their Peck their Bice, And O, the women lost ther Keelcr. Yes. all is lost and those who've gone, Have long ere now perchance forgot 'cm They've In-st their Solaie, lost their Child, Have lost their Pride, and Hope $ Bottuml Ir. Swan is State Treasurer.
From a late Foreign Journal, FADING FLOWERS. Oh! pale and drooping flowers! Ye that so brightly meet the morning's eye! Is there noorrow in your native bowers, That thus ye die? Are there not folded wings On the green boughs? a silence and a gloom
Amidst the leaves, uid all the breathing things,
That loved your bloom? No! the rejoicing bee There woos the violets, as at early dawn; Ad o'er the elastic sob, in tamelssglce, Still bounds the fawn, And the rich bank ve crownM"
Bthe woods front, yet hears a thousand
songs round Float through the branches trembling far aWith happy throngs. Wherefore, to us alone. Of ill that walk the warm and laughing earth, Bring ye sad thoughts of Hope & Beauty gone, And ?anislied Mirth? Why mnst your fading hells, With the faint sweetness of their departing breith, Re mad us but of sornwM ftrewclls, Decay and Do ith.
A HINT TO MOTHERS. All young animals naturally delight to be in
theonenair. and in prepetual motion; but we
signify our disapprobation of this intention ol
nature by contining our infants mostly in nouses, and swathing them, when born, as tightly as possible. This natural instinct appears very strong, when we see a child released from its confinement, in the short interval betwixt pulling off its day clothes, and .-writhing it again before it is put to sleep. The evident tokens of delight which the little creature shows in recovering the free use of its limbs, and the strong reluctance it discox ers to be again remitted to its bondage, one should think, would strike conviction of t!ie cruelty ami absurdity of this practice into the most stupid of mankind. Dr. Gregory.
