'? request. THE GLOOM 01' AUTUMN. Hail ! ye sighing sons of sorrow, View with me the autumnal gloom. Learn from hence your fate to mor row Dead perhaps laid in the tomb. Sec all nature fading, dying; Silent all things seem to mourn. Life from vegetation living, . Irings to mind my mouldring urn. Oft the autumn's tempest rising, Makes the loftly forest nod ; f-cencs of nature, how surprising, Read in nature, nature's (iod. See our Sovereign, sole Creator. Lire eternal in the sky; While we, mortal?, yield to nature. Bloom awhile, then fade and die. Nations die by dread l.ellona. Through enrag'd tyrannic king-Ja-t like plants in pale Pomona, Fall to rise in future springs. Mournful scenes, when vegetation. Dies by trost. or norms devour; Doubly mournful, when a nation Dies by neighb'ring nation's power. Death and war, my mind depresses. Autumn shows me mv decay; Calls to mind my past distresses Warns me of a dying dav. Autumn gives me melancholy Strikes dejection through mv sou;. While 1 mourn my former folly, "Waves of sorrow o'er me roll." Lo! I he.tr the air resounding. With expiring insect.-, crir s: Ah! their moans to me how wounding Emblem of my aged sigh?. Hollow winds about me roaring Noisy waters round me rise"; While 1 ii my fate deploring. Tears fast streaming from mv eve ? What tome are autumn's treasures Since I know no earthly joy; Long I've lost all youthful pleasuresTime must youth and health destroy. Fleasurcs once I fondly courted, Shar'd each bliss that youth bestows; EuMo see where then Imported, Now embitters all my woes. Age and sorrow since have biased Every youthful, pleasing dream ; Quiv'ring age with youth Contracted Oh! how short their glories seem!
