ADDRESS TO THE.MLVJIV. At Belzom's Exhibition. By Camp ell. Ami thou hast walked about, (how strange a story 0 InTheoes streets, three thousand years ago, Wuen the Memaonian was in all its glory, And time had nut btgun to overthrow Those temples, palaces, and piles stupendous. Of which the very rulws are tremendous. Speak! for thou long enough hast acted Dummy,
Tnou hast a tongue come lei us he:ir its June; Thoa'rt standing on thy legs above ground, Mummy! Koviitiug the glimpses of the moon, IS ol like thin g..osts, or disembodied creatures. But with thy bones, and tleah, and limbs, and features. Tell us for doubtless thou canst recollect, Touuom we should assigc the Sphinx's fame; Was Cheops, or Cephrenes architect Of.Mther Pyramid that . ears Ins name! Is Poinpy s pillar really a misnomer! If as 1 nehes aiuindred gates, as sung hy Homer!
Perhaps thou wast a Mason, and forbhlden By oaV.i to tell the mysteries of thy trade, Ttica say what secret melody was hidden In Aiemuon's statue which at sunrise played! Perhaps thou wast a Priest if so, my struggles Are vain, for priestcraft never owns its juggles. Perchance that very hand, now pinioned fat, Has ho-a-noVd with Pharaoh, gla?s to glass; Or dropp'd a halfpenny in Homer's hat, Or doifd thine ow n to let Queen Dido pass. Or held, by Solomon's own invitation, A torch at the Temple' dedication. I need not ask thee if that hand, when armed, Has any Roman soldier maul'd and knuckled. l- i ..! w at dead, and ouried, and embalmed, Erj Koi .itis., and Kemus had been suckled: Antiquity appears to have :jegun, Long aft' r thy primeval race was run. Ti u rould'st tlovclop, if that withered tongue Might tell us what these sightless orbs h ive seen. How the v. orld looked when it was fresh, and your.g. And the great Deluge still had left it green Or was it then so old, that History's pages Contained no record of its early ages! Still silent, incommunicative elf! Ar. sworn to secrecy! then keep thy vov, tir prithee tell u something of thy-edf. Ix- vcal tin-secrets uf thy prison house; bi!,ce in the world of spirits tiiou hast slumher'd, "Wnat hast thou seen a hat sti ange ad ventures numt er'd!
