POETRY. LIFE AND DEATH. Fro:n the'JCcw Jlordhly JIaganrA. O fear not thou to 'die For rather fear tolive, for Life Has tliousand snares thy feet to try By peril, pain, aud strife. Brief is the work of death; But life! the spirit shrinks to sc How full ere 1 leaven recalls the breath, The cup of woe may be. O fear not thou to die! No more to suffer or to sin, No snares without thy faith to try, No traitor heart within: Rut fear, oh! rather fear The pay, the light, the changeful scene. The fluttering smiles that greet thee here, From Heaven thy heart that wean. Fear, lest in evil hour, Thy pure and holy hope, o'ercome U y clouds that in the horison lour, Thy spirit feel that gloom Which over earth and heaven The covering throws of fell despair; And deems itself the unforgiveu Predestined child cf care. O fear not thou to die ! To die, and be that blessed one, Who, in the bright and beauteous sky, May feel his conflict dene Who feels that nevermore The tear of grief, or shame shall come For thousand wanderings from the Towe r Who loved, and called him home!
THE VILLAGE CHURCH. Sweet home of peace ! the ling'riug day till plays upon thy turrets grey; Put silent new the voice cf prayer Which once uprose so sweetly there, The cricket's htful cry alone Is mingled with the lew w iud,s inoen, .Sadly they seem to w.iil the fitc Thai leu U.y altars de so' ate. Sweet homo of peac ! how oft i've stood Amid thy little solitude, A truant uy stolen forth to get The crane's bill and the violet, And listened to the village hum, Which on the quiet air would come, With the long echoing laugh and shout. Sent shrilly from the urchin reut. And at Aiitum'a balmy eve, When the bright dowers begin to leave The faded grass and gloriously The harvest moon went up the iky, I rum the far distant greenwood tree. The kit's light notes of melody, Stole upwards to the holy ground. As joyously the dance went round. Heres when the sabbath dav w3; h,nr
And ruddy the- summer' sun J-ihone o'er the little vale below, Uprose the hymn so sweet, so slow, The traveller in tne distant gien Paused on his way to catch again The lirigVing notes, till psrtingday, i Threw its cold shadows o'er his way. Those days have passed; and mournfully i -ie dulling wind iocs rustlino- by But finds not there' those beautVoiis' flow-r It sported with, in happier hours; And gentle forms who loved to gaze Lpon their bloom in youthful davs, ie them have passed away and died, Aud humbly here sleep side by side. U. 5. Literary Gcz. amemoan woivmrr. Ti e zeal with which the cause of liberty was embraced by the women of America, during the war of the revolution, has been often mentioned w th admiration and praise. The following anecdotes will forcibly illustrate the extent & strength cl tins patriotic feeling. To Mrs. Pinckney, the wife of CJ. Charles
lucuney, a n ntish officer once said It is
ceiled with art, and not unfrequently made an ap
pendage to temale attire, ha escaped the vigilance of the guards, expressly stationed to prevent sinus-eline:. aud speedily converted into regimen-
tai -shape, and worn triumphantly in battle. ioois have in many instances been relinquished by the
delieate wearer to the active partizan. 1 have
teen a horseman's helmet concealed by a well ar
ranged headdress, and epaulettes delivered from the folds of the simple can of a matron. Feathers
and cockades were much in demand, and so cun
ningly hid aud handsomely presented, that he
could have been no true Knight, who did not feel
the obligation to defend tlwm to the last extremity
lu the indulgence of wanton asperities towards
the patriotic Fair, the aggressors were not unfre
qucntly answered with a keenness of repartee
that lelt them little cause tor triumph. 1 he haugh
ty Tarleton, vaunting his feats of gallantry to the
great disparagement ol the otlicers of the con tin
ental cavalry, said to a lady al Wilmington, '1 have
a very earnest desire to .see your far famed hero.
Col. Washington. 4 Your wish. Col. might haye
been fully gratified.' she. promptly replied, 'had
you ventured to look behind you alter the battle
of Cowpens., It was in this battle, that W ash
iugtonhad wounded Tarleton in the hand, wh'ch gave rise to a still more pointed retort. Conversing with .Mrs. Wiley Jones, Col. Tarleton observed: You appear to think very highly of Col. Wash ington, and yet I have been tolu, tnat he is so ignorant a fellow, that he can hardly xcnlc las own name.' 'It may be the case,' she readily replied, 4but no man better than yourself, colonel, can tes
tify that he knows how to make his mark. Posts vi Fence. In the "memoirs of the Phila
delphia Agricultural Society," is a paper signed
bv John H, Lvans, which states in substance, that
post in i'euce will last much longer for setting them with their tops down. luanote on this article, the Hon. liicbard Peters ays, 4 1 have expe
rienced the truth ot the fact above stated, 1 do
not pretend accurately or satisfactorily to ac
count for it. I con lectured, that by reversing the
vessels in which the sap hail been accustomed to
circulate, whilst the tree was in life, the moisture
drawn up by the sun, in vessels of c en dead tim
ber, was impeded by the reversed positions. Hud the posts teen, as they generally are, placed with tlicir but euds dow nwards, tbe vesesls designated forcirculation of sap, might be Idled with moisture from the airor earth. However fanciful this conjecture may appear, t lie fact mentioned by Mr. Evans, is important, and proved in many ill-dances.'' Ctt lec to a N tin n r ryS n a K s, r E .4 R F .
