From the Connecticut Courant, THE OLD MAX. Why gaze ye on my hoary hair, Ye children young and gay? Your locks, beneath the blast of care, Will bleach as white as they. I had a mother once like ycu, Who o,cr my pillow hung, Kis3.d from my cheek the Lriay dew, And taught ny faltering tongue. She, when the nightly couch was spread. Would bow my infant knee, And place her hand upon my head. Ami kneeling pray for me. "But then there came a fearful day. I sought my incther'j bed, Till harsh hands bore me thence away. And told me she wci dead. I pluek'd a fair white Rose and stele To lay it by her siJe, And thought strange sleep enehaiaM herscul, For no fond voice rej lied. That eve, I knelt me down in woe And said a lonely prayer, Yet still my temples seem'd to gluvr As if that hand were there. Years fled and left me childhood's joy, Gay spurts and pastimes dear, I rose a wild and wayward boy, Who scorn'd the curb of fear. Fierce passions shook me like a reed, Yet, ere at night I slept. That soft hand made my bosom bleed, And down I fell and wept. Youth came the preps of virtue reel'd: Hut oft a', davs decline, A marble touch my brou - coneal'd

ken among the christians were not sufficient to keep the corps complete, and the,.Turks were permitted to enter it: j et the 'children of christian captives have always obtained the most easy admission to this dignity. Everv Janizary is capable of promotion to

the grade of Kiaia-bcy, lieutenant general of

Janizaries; indeed those wno were chosen lor this honor w ere such as had risen from simple Janizaries to an oti'ice. They could likewise rise (but only in time of war) to the dignity of Aga, w hich is one of the great dignities of the empire which confer the right of appearing at

the Divan. It has already been remarked, that the Janizaries until the late rcvoit, had always been paid, fed &. clothed at the expense of the trensurv: they received four sous a day, which in-

jcreased every year of service one sous a day.

Those who became old or invalid, had their pay

doubled from the treasury of the corps. The Janizaries could be punished only by a council of war called Divan, which assembled in the palace of the Aga. There only were complaints to be catered against them; and no other authority had the right to ialiict the .-lightest punishment upon them. The council of war condemned them, according to the nature of their otleuces, to the bastinado or to death. Capital punishment was indicted by putting them into sacks and throwing them into the sea, and this w as performed in the night, m order to avoid a revolt. In Constantinople the Janizaries h:id eighty old quarters and l'- new ones; and at Adrianuple there were three very tine ones. Each;

'chamber, or orta, occupied one quarter, where jthe unmarried lived and the married were rcI quired to present themselves every Friday, re'ceiving in consequence smaller pay. Fr. e hundred Janizaries formed the euuru of the -erairi-io and received their ration- from the vuuan"r;

kitchen. In every case when they haa taken ioilenoe, th-v reversed their dibits without
