nation, especially to those J who attended the Democratic i national convention in New York city last slimmer. Mayor Quigley will be remembered as the obstreperous delegate in that convention who fought the K u Klux Klan so bitterly, who ' look exceptions to the rulings of the I presiding officer, and who three times ! trieil N, e;ci the convention to reeonI sider its action and condemn the Klan in its platform. Now one Daniel ,1. Murphy, of Chelsea, is arrested and charged with posI session of a large quantity of alcohol land whisky. In his hearing Murphy charged the Chelsea mayor with bejjng in league with rum-runners and I In lackers, and his hear ing was cor-

Counsel for Murphy at the hearing s.-iid that their client had been "doublecrossed" by Mayor Quigley and that j the mayor had ordered a ratd on Murphy's place as a result of a quarrel I among rumrunners. URBANA, ILL., Feb. 9. The many activities staged by the Champaign-Urbana Knights of the Ku Klux Klan are given additional impressiveness by the splendid stagings made possible by the Klan's ownership of the magnificant "Illinois" theater, pictured here. This theater was purchased for use as a Klavern by the local unit of the Klan last year, and has been the scene of many notable gatherings of 100 Americans. Among the most important of these was the first annual realm klorero. During the coming months many interesting, inspiring and educational programs will be conducted here. The gigantic, electrically lighted fiery cross that adorns the top of the building, may be seen from afar, and is recognized throughout this section is looked upon as a beacon to a shrine of patriotic Protestantism.

(Special to The Kourier.) , Paris, Feb. 9. The Cham-; ber of Deputies has voted forj
suppression ot the french Embassy to the Vatican by a vote of 314 to 250. Premier Herviot had previously announced he would stake the question of confidence on this proposition, nnd the Chamber gave him the necessary vote. The severance of diplo
matic relations between France and Home was decided along strict, party! lines, the vote representing the exact relative strength of the government and ihe opposition. i Premier llerriot let it be under-' stood that Alsace and Lorraine would j be represented at ihe Vatican by a diplomatic officer under the terms of; the Concordat which still applies to'1 the recovered provinces. Pope's Attitude Strange. i Premier llerriot declared the atti-j

daring the treaty of Versailles to-be an "artificial peace." llerriot said the pope had "increased the hatred beUseen nations." "During the war. the policy of the pope was at least strangely neutral." he said. A deputy remarked that Krance was not represented at the Vatican during the war and that the Vatican was neutral -or that account. "Belgium was represented at the Vatican." llerriot replied, "but that didn't prevent the fJermans shooting Belgian priests. The pope did not make protests in the name of justice loud enougli to be heard above the fighting. He Kept Silence: "lr the time of Gregory," llerriot
continued, "the pontiff went to the fortifications to defend the beseiged. but in 1915 the voice of the pope was silenced. "I don't want to strike at religion. We wouldn't have hail a conflict with the Roman Catholics if they had not fought us." U. S. HAS LENT FARMERS 1,500 MILLION DOLLARS
More than $1,500,000,000 has been lent to farmers by the Farm Loan system since it was created seven years ago. Commissioner 11. A. Cooper told the annual conference of presidents of Joint Stock Land Banks recently. Of total loans, there have been maturities exceeding S226.000.000. he said. At present there are less than one-half of one per cent of all maturrities more than ninety days past due. According to Cooper, these figures demonstrate the success of the Farm Loan system. He prophesied even greater results from the Farm Loan act In the future. '
