AS OTHERS From an Article by the Rev. A,
Des Moines this year entertained the National Roman Catholic Charities League. There were a large number of delegates here from all over the country. They indicated their scope of work and it takes in every phase of human interest from politics to homes for unfortunate girls. They marshal their forces both of members and money to the things that they promote. They get their support from every source under the sun, from selling chances to prize card
parties on tnrough to a very persistento ind successful campaign everywhere campaign of cottinir money from Protestants to be used in their propaganda which is first of all political and sometimes reliKiotis. They are 'pro-setters' when it conies to business and politics. We admire their agility but do. not subscribe to it. "An interesting thing: in connection with this convention was the loving contact that they had with the Ku Klux- Klan. There were some flaps on their convention hall and the Klan noticed them and climbed to the roof and took a picture of the same and from the print that was in our mornin? paper, the Roman Catholic flag was above the American flag. Whether this was so or not so. the interestins thins is that the Romanists raised a howl about it and immediately sought to have several policemen dismissed from the force because of it. Where there is smoke there is sometimes fire. The end is not yet. "Xo one out this way has anything against a Roman Catholic, but 'we want them to be honest-to-goodness American citizens and use their church for religious training and character building. We are tolerant and we love them, but we refuse to sympathize with any sect that proposes politics as a chief part of its program. "They had a great parade in connection with the above gathering. Fight o'clock in the morning and on Sunday. They were out and they were in it. Persons. Protestants, who may times take a second nap on Sunday morning and cither miss or are late to their own services, were out looking on. There was nothing to see but a lot of people walking down the street, hut they were there. Tliey Cooperate. "Hut the point is that they cooperate and make an aDpep.rance that leads a lot of folks to think that they are more than they are. Well, it was quite a stunt, but made very little impression on the community. Fair speech and foul deeds of both past and present loom up when one is watching the passing show of Cut holicism. "They indulged in Pino speech. They glibly ran off the ends of their tongues the great American right of free speech, free press and freedom to worship God after the dictates of one's conscience. They spoke delightfully upon the thought that we ought to destroy .anybody who tries to arouse race or religious prejudice. Rut what do our mouthings upon this subject amount to if we immediately set ourselves to the task of doing the opposite of what our lips say? Sincerity and common honesty compels one to practice what he preaches. We fear our brethren, the Catholics, are not able to do this. Surely by this time they must know that that sort of thing cannot and will not be tolerated in this land or any land that has any reasonable knowledge of the Bible." The Tea Hound.
