Washington, Jan. 26. "If

Protestantism is to be preserved," said a prominent lay

man, "Protestants must organize and be prepared to defend themselves and their faith against the insidious, en

croachments of papalism which is really doing everything in its power to crush Protestants under the pretext of resisting religious intolerance." The necessity for a closer unity among the various Protestant denominations has become strikingly

apparent within the last few years, according to both leaders and laymen. With this thought in mind an interdenominational foreign mission convention has been called to meet in Washington Jan. 2S to Feb. 2. It is expected that at least 5.000 Protestants, from all over the Vnited States and Canada, will be in attendance.

Chief Purpose; The primary purpose of the convention, according to Dr. James L. Barton, of Boston, chairman of the

committee, is to mobilize the active Protestants of North America in an! effort to prove to disturbed countries abroad that ""the solution of their troubles lies in the application of Christian principles. President Coplidgp will head the list of speakers. Among others on the program for addresses are J. H. Oldham, of London; N. W. Powell, of Toronto, and leading missionaries from foreign countries. They will make reports on the outlook for Protestantism in Rome-ridden Europe. It is expected this convention will be the means of bringing about an amalgamation of real live Protestants.

Against Protestants. A prominent layman continued as

to study at first hand the methods used by the Roman Catholic hierarchy to crush Protestantism whereever it draes to lift its head. Reduced to its lowest " terms, the Roman Catholic organization has no reason to fear or oppose the Knights of the Ku Klux. Klan or any other patriotic movement, if its purposes are open and above board. It seems incredible to me that so many Protestants should be so gullible as to accept false papal propaganda which accuses the Klan of almost every dastardly crime under the sun. "It should be significant, however.

it seems to me. that all the sensational charges the pope's followers have made against the Klan. not one has

Connersville, Ind., Jan. 26. Despite

every effort to disrupt the organiza

tion of Klansmen in this city, both by

Roman interests and certain disgrun

tied individuals, the local unit of the Klan is going forward at a most gratifying pace. The rank and file of the

Klan became disgusted at the tactics used by some persons and "got on the

lob and the results speak tor tnem-

selves. Last Monday night a speaker

from Indianapolis was greeted by most enthusiastic audience.

Instead of being disrupted a3 the

enemies carefully planned, the Con

nersville unit is gaining strength and a real and active unit has now been

established. Staff officers recently

delivered addresses here and the re

sult has been most beneficial. Even though a terriffic fight was made in

this citv to tear down the organiza

tion, activities of the foe have been

greatly exaggerated. Many loyal Klansmen are paying no attention to

the alleged strife which is said to exist but are going ahead planning for the future and laying down a concrete plan to cover their activities for this

year and with a view to future years

Washington, Jan. 26. Representative Boylan, Irish Roman Catholic, of New York, has proposed an amendment in the House Of Representatives, providing for appointment for a Minister to the Irish Free State, also Catholic, but he was doomed to disappointment for his amendment was overwhelmingly rejected. This government is not going to send ministers or ambassadors to the Vatican or any other kind of a Catholic crowd trying to run a government.

Bureau of The Kourier. I'la C St. N. W., Washington. Washington, I). C. Representative

Nicholas Longworth. of Ohio, is assured of election on the lirst ballot for the Speakership of the next House, according to an announcement issued here by Representative Begg. of the Sandusky district, one of his campaign managers. The prediction was made after- a survey covering "practically every member of the incoming congress." Mr. Begg gave out the following statement: "The Republican congressman from Ohio, at a conference made a complete survey of the status of the campaign for Speaker. The Ohio meSnbers. in

knowledge of the world was held by the Roman Catholic Church." Monsignor Gavisk used the time allotted to him, in praising the. Roman Catholic parochial schools. Reason Becomes Apparent. If the figures given by Mr. Cavanaugh are correct, the reason for this latest move by the Roman Catholics in public school affairs becomes very evident. He stated that out of approximately five million Roman Catholic school children between the ages of five and fifteen, not more than two million of them attended Roman Cathlic parochial schools. This

would mean that virtually three-fifths

of the Roman Catholic school children are attending public schools. Should the bill porviding for the reading of the Bible, without comment, in the public schools of Indiana become a law. It would mean, according to the figures given by Mr. Cavanaugh, that approximately threefsurths of the Roman Catholic children of school age In Indiana would hear the King James version of the Bible, which according to the Roman Catholic hierarchy is the "Protestant Bible." It is pointed out that the Roman Catholic Church does not permit the reading of any Bible by Roman Catholics, without certain restrictions. Information Rtireau Errs. Sn this connection. It has been cited

that tiie Roman Catholic information bureau, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Indiana Catholic and Record, of Indianapolis, has been

running certain advertisements in the I daily papers in regard to the Bible and Roman Catholics, which have not clearly set out in the teachings of the

Roman hierarchy in regard to Bible reading by Roman Catholics, and that the advertisements have been In the main, most misleading. In short, either the information bureau is wrong or high dignitaries of the Rochurch are in error as to what the Roman church teaches in this regard. I'sual Tactics Employed. The backing of the "rival Bible bill" by the Roman Catholics carries out their usijal line of procedure, that of creating confusion among those

whom they oppose and attempting to create friction or factions on the other side. Had not the Sims bill, or one like it, been introduced in the legislature, it is ridiculous, as one backer

of the Sims bill declared, to imagine the Roman Catholic taking an interest in religous training in the public schools.

LAFAYETTE UNIT SURVIVES FIGHT MADE AGAINST IT Tippecanoe County Klansmen Are Enjoying Continued Prosperity.

Lafayette, Ind., Jan. 20. --The Laf-j ayettc Klan. so long bitterly denounc-'

ed by George Purgan. for many years mayor of this city, and who made an unsuccessful race for the nomination for Governor on a so-called "antlKlan" platform, is busy carrying out a program which has never been interfered with, despite the verbal fireworks of Mr. Durgan and other persons opposing the American organization. An excellent meeting was held here recently when a very large gathering of Klansmen greeted a speaker from

the state headquarters in Indianapolis. Much enthusiasm was manifest by the local Klansmen who attended the meeting. The Klan has built in Tippecanot County on a solid foundation which has proved proof against all attacks made upon it. . o
