Deputy Says He Is Center of World Interest American Papists Will Rise.
Bureau of The Kourier. 215 G St. N. W.. Washington. Washington, Jan. 26. President Coolidge sometime ago sent to the Senate for confirmation the names of Attorney General Harlan F. Stone to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court, and!
Charles B. Warren, of Michigan, to head the Department of Justice. rVoth of these men are Protestants and stand exceedingly hifrh in their profession. Their -confirmations have been blocked for davs and
! weeks by Roman Catholics in the j Senate headed by Senator Thomas J. Walsh, of. Montana. it ha-s just leaked out that Senator Walsh has ; been to the Department of Justice in j conference w ith Attorney General i'Stone trying to get him to drop tirinK-
infT tin indictment in the District of I Columbia apainst his colleague, Sen- : ator Wheeler, of Montana. I A statement Riven out here by At1 torney General Stone about this case lis significant. He says: "Det them go 'to ii. - The course of this department I in its enforcement of the law will not be affected in any way by threats or j intimations in connection -with conftrmation of -the Attorney General
for justice of the Supreme Court hy the Senate." Such a statement leads one to the conclusion .that Senator Walsh was
trying to pull Mr. Stone off his place on the -Supreme bench. The situation is decidedly interesting and shows to what e-xtent the Human 'atholics in the Senate will go to accomplish their purpose. The present attorney general is no bluffer; the consensus of opinion in Washington is that he would rather lose continuation for- his .new place on the Supreme Court than to com
promise or winK at doing what he conceives his duly while-still at the head of the Department of Justice.

men were Jid. B. Forbes and omer Warren, men who heretofore had not taken a prominent part in the Williamson county cleanup and subsequent incidents, and seemed to just incidentally he in the company of
Young. Others of Young's friends were on the street in the vicinity of the European Hotel, but did not en
gage in the aftray. Flaming Circle Active. Thirty minutes before this sanguinary battle a bullet from a highpowered rifle whizzed by the head of one of the Herrin night police and struck a stone pillar in the entrance of the Gauldoni drug store. This was the ball which lured the martyred Klansmen to their violent end, and the signal to the flaming Circle adherents, scattered along the street.
that a repitition of the affair of Aug
ust .10 was to be staged. Oro Thomas was known to-be in Herrin from Marion on one of his infrequent visits. Authenticated rumors had reached Young's friends that thr enemies were out to get the raider chieftain, and Young, with characteristic foolhardiness. walked into the trap which was waiting to be sprung. A minute later the shcte rang out. Thomas first mortally wounding Young before the latter eoiild draw, and Thomas being himself shot in the head over his right eye and instantly killed'while his victim was sinking to the floor. Young continued to fire even while breathing
his last until his automatic clip was emptied. Firing also began from the outside into the cigar store. When Young entered the cigar store it is believed that he sought Carl and Farl Shelton, pals of Sheriff Galitgan and deputy sheriff Thomas, reported to be in Herrin Saturday-
afternoon. The Shelton brothers are accused of being the slayer of Constable Caesar Cagle-. first to die in the internecine strife and were also two of the four men who are alleged to
have wounded S. Glenn Young and blinded his wife. last summer in a lonely river bottom near Belleville, Illinois. So far as known the report that the Shelton brothers were here was only a part of the plot later carried out. Thomas followed Young in
to the store and immediately fired, lwice at close range? both bullets striking Young in the right breast. Thirteen Lives Sacrificed. Thirteen lives heve been claimed, pearly fifty thousand dollars in cash expended to improve social conditions in Williamson county as material considerations, but the actual expenditure in widowed wives, fatherless orphans, bitter tears and unassuaged grief cannot be computed in terms of commerce.
F.ight of these lives were tlioee ot Klansmen, seven others were saej-i-iiced on the altar of disloyalty and trreed. The price is staggering on
hoth sides, yet the forces of righteousness still present an unyielding front to the enemy, and silently take up the burden where others lay it down with grim determination that right shall triumph. Roh sides have lost their acknowledged leaders yet the law and order forces feel that in the death of Thomas, the opposition has lofst its
Piaster mind, the one man in its tajnks who possessed the, desperate courage and the strong will so essen
tial to gang control. Dozen More Marked for leatli. Following the tragic duel to the death, leaders in the Klan local took charge of affairs, the two night po
lice having mysteriously cusappeareo. Soldiers from the Carbondale company of state guards arrived about 3 o'clock Sunday morning, and surface calm was restored. Galligan is said to have telephoned to Governor
I Small at Springfield for aid. as he
usually does following an outbreak of his gumjien, and the Governor lost no time in acting. While it is known that a dozen more Herrin citizens have been marked for slaughter by the lawless element, in addition to the seven already murdered, these leaders face the situation calmly, hoping that each tragedy will be the last and that true Americanism will finally assert itself. Spectacular Career".
Probably few men had a iITOre spectacular career than that of Young in Illinois in the last three years. Known as the "stormy petrel'' of Williamson county, the scene of freMuent clashes in the last two years between union and non-union miners, Ku Klux Klan and anti-Klan forces
and wets and drys. Young took a more or less important part in most of the troubles. As a result of his activities ie gain

Several times, his activities brought him into court on charges tanging from homicide to assault, but Young withstood all of them. Several years ago lie gained a wide reputation various parts of the country as a law-enforcement agent, but his first act to startle the public was his capture of the noted Crawleys, a gang of world-wide draft evaders, for whom 1'nited States troopers and Federal officers searched for months in the mountains of northern t-torgiu, western NorrtT Carolina and eastern Tennessee. BIG GROWTH REPORTED
Texas Man Makes Address of Morning Entered in Five Commonwealths. Oklahoma City, Jan. 26. "I am more than pleased with the meeting which we have just closed. We had in at
tendance representatives from practically every county in
Oklahoma, and they proved
to be enthusiastic, clean, intelligent Ameican business men who will make our Company successful in this state." With this statement. W. J. I.aidlaw. of the firm of Marvin & Laidlaw. the general agents of the Empire Mutual Ijife Insurance Company, Kansas City, Mo., announced the success of the agents' meeting held here in Oklahoma City. Local agents from all parts of the state were in attendance.
Interesting figures were given them
by Mr. Laidlaw, showing the material progress made since the home office was opened in Kansas City. An address by M. G. Olsen. district agent for Central Texas, featured the morning session. The Empire Life Insurance Company proposes to write policies for white. Protestant. Gentile Americans. Klan membership is not required to secure a policy. In fact, a large portion of the policy holders are not Klansmen. The idea is not new in the insurance world, and it is one that can be of immeasurable service
to real Americans in connection with their life insurance problems.
"The company is making rapid progress. When compared with the beginnings of many of the large life insurance companies, we find that it hns advanced more rapidly than many of the largest did in their first year," Mr. Laidlaw said. "We are writing life insurance on the old line, legal, reserve, plan, with policy forms and rates that compare
tavorably with all of the other companies. With the co-operation of the enthusiastic Americans who attended this meeting today, our success in Oklahoma is assured." The Empire Mutual life Insurance Company is entered for business in
five states at the present time, and has plans under way to enter manymore states during the coming year. The agents attendad a luncheon at noon in the large banquet room of the Skirvin Hotel. The session lasted all day. OBJECTION TO

Bean and Trapp were indicted jointly in Seminole county and the former took all responsibility and received a ten-year sentence. Trapp was exonerated. When it came time for Bean to tx
to prison he asked the Governor for a reprieve. It was granted in two hours on the excuse that Bean was doing some auditing work for several municipalities and to stop him in that work would entail loss to these communities. But an inquisitive newspaper editor found that Bean's work had not been started, or had been finished, in the towns mentioned. There was considerable newspaper, discussion of the case at the time, and many who claimed to know said that it was their opinion that G. K. Bean would never

In 1920 Young's crusade brought him into Illinois. Almost from the time he entered the Stale he was in the public eye.
