DIES MARTYR TO CAUSE HE LOVED IN HERRIN DUEL

'Special to The Fiery Cross.) j South Bend, Ind., Jan. 'JG. linemies of the Klan in this locality have evidently given up hope of stopping the. growth of the organization in this ounty. While there are sporadic attacks, they amount to little and local Kliinsmen pay no heed to them. The local unit is going along the even tenure of its way and putting its time to furthering the cause of the Klan and its program of Christianity and Americanism and forgetting the indi viduals who would thwart its progross or those agents of Home who are always opposed to any Protestant organization which "speaks out of school."

The Klajismen were addressed by a brilliant speaker here Tuesday night of last week and showed great interest in the address. All the troubles in this unit have long since been settled and the local organization is forging ahead lo the satisfaction of all concerned in its welfare. LIBERTYHALL DEDICATION IS

letters from civic organizations and! from individuals complimenting him on his work. Trials to Commence. Trials of alleged bootleggers and rum runners arrested by Sheriff Concannon since he took office Jan. 1. are expected to start this week. The basement of the jail is rapidly filling with confiscated liquor and stills of

lull kinds. The latest arrest was that I of Antone Casto. alleged rum runner, j about twelve miles north of Terre ! Haute. A high-powered automobile

and fourteen gallons of pure grain al

cohol was confiscated. Fifty gallons of "mule" was confiscated at a place about twelve miles north of the city and Ludlwicka Vinco taken into custody. Tony Mapoles. living in the heart of "Hollywood" in West Terre Haute, was arrested as he was pumping liquor from an underground tank into bottles. The tank was so arranged that it could be filled

by the same pump which was used to pump the liquor into the bottles. Nothing appeared above the ground

except one-tenth of an inch of a small tube. A still was confiscated at the place of a Frenchman, known as Alphonzo Harris, and Harris placed under arrest . An outfit for making artificial whisky was taken by the officers when Clarence Lowery was arrested. The outfit consists of grain alcohol, glycerine, coloring, a blend and other ingredlants. The arrests of Snide Todeliop resulted in a haul of thlrty-four jugs of "mule" and wine. Much other confiscated liquor, bottling outfits and paraphernalia litter the big room in the basement of the jail.

Swing t'p To 1'ledce. Sheriff Foncannon wasted no time

on his start to live up to tne pieage made to the people of Vigo county, before his election, and is entering on a clean-up campaign which is alreaely bringing results. Liquor is neit being sold with the freedom which

marked its sale before Sheriff Foncannon took his office on New Vear's Day. Threats on his life are not worrying the sheriff despite the desperate characters who are known to

ply their trade in Vigo county. The death of McDonald, long known as the most desperate man in Vigo county, and whom everybody feared, is giving the criminals something to think about. The chance taken by Foncannon while covered with a gun in the hands of a man as desperate as McDonald, gives warning to the

lewless element that they now have a man of steel nerves and unflinching bravery with whom o deal. McDonald's Record. McDonald, when shot seven times

in a local court room nearly 1 7 years

ago after ne naa snot ana Kiuea a detective in open court, was struck

three times in the chest. Upon re

covery he .was sent to prison, wne.re he served nine years and was then pardoned. Everybody in the locality of fontanet fear McDonald, and it was for this rej that Sheriff Fon-

eanhon was o go from store

of the Killing in

ny the riot call

rho had sent

the verdict in op-n court. The absent juror was Mrs. Ida Weber, who was seized with an attack of pleurisy nt about 4 o'clock in the morning. Defendant's Visit Priest.

Ry an odd coincidence, the name of the priest whose name appears in I the sworn statement which is being j withheld, is also AVeber. It could j not be learned at this time in just i what way Priest Weber's name is mentioned, although it is rumoreB j that one of the defendants asserts that he and another defendant stopped .it the home of the priest before the j rohhery took place and "Imagined it I had something to do with the Klan." I By those who are connected with i the case no doubt exists in their

in a struggle almost two minds but that the developments ex-, t'nanimouo rccomrnenda-1 pee ted are merely delayed by the pe

culiar trend taken by tne trial and the continued delay. Walden. whom it was stated, was prepared to plead guilty, has not yet gone before the court, and it could not he ascertained today just whjen this would be.
