Surprising Figures 'J'HE Immediate fight waged by certain Influences on every move made to strengthen the public schools, has brought to light some interesting figures prepared by those who would have uniformity in the education of American children. One set of these figures shows that illiteracy Is practically nil In the richer communities where taxable property is such that a school tax levy may

be effected that will provide the needed amount to conduct the schools properly. Every move started to obtain an equalization of school

funds, either through state or federal action, has been fought by these same interests which have fought the public schools from their inception. Figures compiled show that the five richest states show an income of $3,356 for each child of sohool age, and that from this income an amount of $50.37 Is spent yearly for each child. The illiteracy in those states is less than one-half of one per cent. , Taking the five poorest states it is found that the income from taxes is only $960 for each school child and that only $10.76 is devoted to education of each child. The result is that the illlteracyln those states amounts to 6 per cent. The illiteracy figures pertain only to white, native-born children. They do not Include the illiteracy among foreigners, which brings America's Illiteracy figures so high. These figures will, no doubt, explain to many just why these certain Influences which profit through ignorance, continue to fight every move put in motion to aid the public schools financially and otherwise. The condition in foreign countries provides an apt illustration of what happens where education is neglected and where there is no unification of schools. In many of those countries are two school systems. One educates those who are to rule, either ecclesiastically or other

wise, while the other system, such as it is. is to make a

hypocritical stand at educating those who are to be ruled. That the system is without credit is seen in the results. Only where organize! effort and one unified system pre vails can the maximum in results be obtained. A nation can only become great and prosper by unity of thnug-ht and action. Two systems teaching differently can not bring about that unified action so necessary for the success of a household, a corporation or a nation. Americans should give deep thought to this matter; ask themselves Just why each move for unification of our public schools is fought? Why each effort, if successful, which would aid all school children, is immediately attacked? Let the reader go deep Into this matter and learn from whence these attacks are originated. It is not so much from what source they seemingly come when thrown before the public, but from what source they actually originate. The American school child in some poor county should have the same chance as the school child fortunate enough

to llve'in" tme--of the rich counties of our richer states. A sincere effort is being maO.e by the friends of the public schools to bring this about. Yo not be misled by those

who would thwart this desired condition for reasons widely divergent from those supposed reasons they give in glowing terms to the public. An law, county, state or federal, which will provide a way to better our school system, should have ten backing of all true Americans.

i nus noes tne enigma go on. This same system which trains Oerinan Roman Catholic priests "for the spiritual needs" of Germans in America, fights all those who declare that the many foreigners within our borders are not being assimilated Herman priests for Germans in America! The Irish in America accept an Italian pope, and the Italians In America accept Irish Cardinals. It appears, however, that the Roman Catholics coming from Germany demand German priests. Maybe they figure that tbey should have something from the big system. They, too, accept nn Italian pope and Irish Cardinals. And, to add insult to injury, the Jilg system sent a Hungarian to America to enlist thferman Roman Catholics to journey to Rome for the big Holy Year exposition.

Of course, for all the outside world knows, the Germans are being made to suffer through humiliation because Martin Luther got unruly and broke up the game some centuries back. But still, these Germans are Roman

Catholics and from all appearances b follower of the pope is a Roman Catholic first und something else afterward.

And even though the Roman C atholic German does have to bow to Italians, Irish and Hungarians, those Italians. Irish and Hungarians are Roman Catholics, and the Roman Catholic government is the Roman Catholic German's government. And then, possibly there are those persons who have been too hasty In asserting that the pope will accept nothing American, in fact, they have. When a person says the pope will accept no American thing, that person forgets the American dollar! In fact, the pope is very fond of our American dollar. So is the whole Roman system. Hasn't that system started a missionary seminary to train young men how to come to America and collect the American dollar? And these young men will not take offense when the Roman Catholic Germans in America flaunt the American dollar In their faces. And. when all Is said and done, think how tine it is that the pope has been soconsiderate as to okeh a plan whereby the Roman system will send missionaries to the United States! Of course the pope knows that America has assimilated all the aliens who have reached America not later than last Christmas that Is why he is sending German priests to America to attend "the spiritual wants" of the Germans in this country. It is all exceeding plain. All which Is not explained is the little enigma which really doesn't amount to much In the face of the great love the pope holds for American dollars.

Before the Reformation Romanism was a seething caldron of wickedness. Bigotry, lying, self-seeking, bestial Immorality that dare not be named, were as common in the clergy as among the laity. On this ancient foundation modern Catholicism builds a shadow tower that outwardly appears beautiful but within maintains Its age-old evils and follows its ancient tradition and unholy precedents.

whose information Is

eign to the true principles of the Ku

Klux Klan. Let us turn for the moment! from' the "intolerance" of the Klan and look to other countries. The reader will find that, according to the Roman corporation, that "intolerance" is worldwide. Within the last two weeks the. attorney general of the Argentine republic, has threatened to arrest and put in Jail, Monsignor Juan Boneo. It is Interesting to note the reason of the threat. The reason is that the Roman Catholic dignitary refused to submit to the Argentine government his credentials for approval. More "intolerance." The Roman bishop refuses to comply with the law and

the government looks on him as it would any other law breaker. And. Argentine is a Roman Catholic country no Klansmen tnere. Tired of Roman Arrogance. In Mexico, where Roman Catholic churches dot the landscape by the thousands, the government is beginning to demand that the Roman corporation comply with the law. Naturally the Romans refuse to do so.

The result is that the government is the result that the government is making demands. It has grown tired of Roman arrogance, and is realizing the handicap of a priest-ridden country. This, in the eyes of the pope and his agents, is more "intolerance." What have we in Europe? More "Intolerance." In France, where the Roman corporation is openly defying the government and refuses to comply with the laws, the agents of Rome

are crying "intolerance" at the hands of the Masons, whom they declare are "running the government."- There is a fight on in Germany where the Roman Catholic machine has succeeded in putting under its direct control the school system of entire states. This is being objected to by certain elements, composed of non-Roman Catholics. These persons, declares the Vatican, are "intolerant." In Spain, that benighted country weighted t?re,tLii Hie burden of the

i.oman Catholic hierarchy, there are rumblings. Thinkers are trying to get their country from beneath the Roman heel. There, however, the

Roman corporation has such a grip that it seems futile. Those enlighted Spaniards, however, -"are "intolerant." To any unbiased person it is quite apparent that the whole world is restless under the brutal government built up by the Vatican. Citizens of Rome First. The governments of the world are realizing that the Roman Catholics known as citizens of their countries are first citizens of the government operating out of tho Vatican in Rome. France realizes this as never before, as six cardinals of the Roman cor poration led the Roman Catholics

against the country, and Rome s agents are addressing large crowds

with words, were it not a tact that Rome exercises a, most peculiar hold, would be branded as treason and the speaker sent to prison. "Wc are ready to fight by the side of our brothers in Alsace and Lorraine," Cardinal Andrieu declared recently in addressing a large Catherine

of Roman Catholics. "In defending their rights we shall not forget the rights of Catholics in the rest of France.. We are ready to die, if need be, proud to demonstrate once again to Europe and the rest of the world that the only causes worth while arc thqse for which one is willing to give his life-." This particular "cause" is the union of church and state, which Uie Vatican is determined to effect in France. As has been shown in these articles, when a question arises between a government and the Roman Catholic church, the government

quicklj finds that the Roman Catholics within her borders are first citizens of the Roman empire. In a dis

patch from Lorient dated December 6, it is stated that "A brigade of mounted gendarmes and a number of smaller units from surrounding centers today proceeded to various points in the Department of Flnistere. Other forces have been sent to points to preserve order in connection with

Catholic demonstrations called for ' tomorrow." A Bit of History. For those persons who are so quick to cry "that could never happen in the United States," a bit of history will no doubt be enlightening. The "Legion of Saint Patrick" formed of deserting Roman Catholics in the war with Mexico provides much food for thought. At the battle of Churubusco, fought

near Mexico City on August 20, 1S47, a strong force of Mexicans used the Convent of San Pablo as a fort. When the Americans attacked, the Roman Catholics in the American Army refused to enter the light and Are upon the convent despite the fact that the Mexicans were using it as a fort and firing on Americans from

within its walls. Kuduniy a priest appeared and held high a crucifix. Immediately more than one hundred Roman Catholic Irish deserted the American ranks and took up the fight against their former comrades. They fought with ferocious bravery and manned the Mexican artillery. Their sharpshooters picked off many of their former comrades. The American flag meant little to them. They were now fighting at the dictates of a Roman Catholic priest and protecting the property of the pope. Three times did they stop the Mexicans when an

attempt was made to raise a flag of truce. When the Americans finally took Churubusco, fifty of the deserters

greBs, in Mansfield's "Mexican War," page 22fi: "In the center of the batteries of the San Pablo was placed the Company of Saint Patrick, formed of der'Ts from the American Army. These men fought desperatefly and skillfully, causing the death of many of the attacking forces. "Three of the Mexican pieces were manned by the deserters, a body of about one hundred who had deserted from the army. They vere enrolled into two companies and commanded by a deserter, Thomas Reilly of the Third Infantry, and were better uniformed and disciplined than the rest of the (Mexican) army. These men fought desperately and are said not to nnlv

have shot down several of their officer's

wnom they knew, but pulled down the white flag of surrender no less than three times." In Young's "History of Mexico," the following is found on page 522: "When the enemy surrendered, while extending the greatest kindness to all the Mexican race, they (the Americans) treated with the greatest severity those of the Legion of Saint Patrick, which was composed entirely of deserters from the American ranks, and who. having been placed in the front of the battle of Santa Ana, were taken prisoners by their former comrades. Fifty, of them were hung as soon as their rases couTO be passed upon by a hastily constituted court martial." Much else can be found in the records of the War Department reeard-

ing the Legion of Saint Patrick, but the above from histories written and published immediately after the close of the Mexican War give trie essentials. Demand Church and State. Thus do we find that all through history up. to the present moment, the allegiance of the Roman Catholic is to Rome regardless of in what country he may be born or reside. At the present time the most outstanding incident is that of France,

where the Roman Catholics led by their cardinals, bishops and priests, are openly defying the government

because tnat government refuses to

have union of church and state. The cry of the Roman agents in France is "religious liberty." Nothing could be more absurd unless it be the cry of "intolerance" against the Klan in America. The Roman Catholic church in France has always had everything that it wanted except that in recent

years, union of church has been de

nied the Roman corporation. Is it strange that the Roman eccle siastical empire should fight the Klan

an organization which has awakened

America to Its peril? We have but to look to Argentine, Mexico, France, countries where it has a strong foothold, to see the turmoil It is creating in its attempt to override all laws, and

it fact, place itself above the law, a thing which the corporation operating out of Rome teaches. Step by step the Roman corporation was tightening its tentacles on America. It did not want America awakened to the menate. In time, if nothing was done to balk its dream of world-wide dominion and complete dominance of America, Rome's millions of subjects

in America could defy the government as they are today doing in France and other countries.

With this in mind, it does not take a vivid Imagination clearly to decipher Just why the Roman ecclesiastical empire hates the Ku Klux Klan with an undying hatred just as it hates the'

Masons, the memory of Martin Luther,

the Orangemen, and each and every Individual, organization or movement that In any Way interfered with the Roman octopus, ever' reaching out for more power, more gold and more victims. Since the inception of its charge that the Klan is intolerant, the Roman corporation has consistently failed to point out wherein the American organization is Intolerant. In foregoing, articles ot this series it has been pointed out wherein the Roman Catholic church is intolerant, and in articles to come, many other Instances Will be given our readers, of the intolerancy of the Roman Catholic machine. While it has been shown that the Vatican Is founded on intolerance, succeeding articles will emphasize this fact. (Article Thirteen will appear next, week.)

Man may pass as the flowers fade and vanish, but Americanism, as exemplified by true Klannishness, will remain forever young, forever blooming, and forever unshaken.

Trie" Ku Klux Klan has helped to do one big thing. It had an important part in stopping the "foreign invasion" which threatened to annihilate every ideal of Americanism which formed the very basis of our institutions. Burn this significant thought into your mind: The fight against the Ku Klux Klan is a fight against Protestants. Opponents of Protestant institutions simply use the Klan as their subterfuge or camuflage. Every well informed American is now aware of this fact.

The tragic death and funeral of Mrs. Porter were dismissed with a few inches of space, with littlo said about her noble contributions to the important literature of the world. Is it any wonder that the publications of young Mr. Vanderbilt, clean and wholesome, are forging in circulation and influence ahead of his elder contemporaries?

Joseph P. Tumulty is demanding an apology. Somebody said that the distinguished Knight of Columbus, while Wilson's secretary, sought to place a Catholic church in every national

The activi-

The true American takes the curtain calls of the political gallery in a kindly spirit because he knows that the great mass of people in their approbation know what is best and give no man to the bears and buzzards unless he deserves it. Whatever is', is not only occasionally right but Is often best.

Every American who prays one way and lives another Is a hypocrite even though he has the reputation of dealing justly in business.

Walter Johnson, famous ball player of the Washington team, pitched a game for the White King Soapers, in Los Angeles. The exposition was put on for the benefit of the H. O. J. s. All of which reminds us that there is a likelihood of a law being passed that will some day open up all Catholic institutions for inspection by state and federal officials. Then all taxpayers and other interested citizens will have an opportunity to know what is going on behind the high thick walls of these places and In other sequestered spots so zealously guarded from public scrutiny by the hierarchy. All Protestant educational and denominational institutions are voluntarily thrown open to. visitors.

ties or catholic "shock troops" are known to all observing Protestants who went .overseas. Let service men tell their own Story about K. C. operations and Influence. Let the Knights of Columbus show what became of the $7,000,000 still remaining unpaid out of funds donated by Protestants as well as others. Tumulty might then find out a few things. He might learn that no apology is due. .

The Jews haven't yet been assimilated in this country, according to Prof. Charles W. Eliot, despite the popular conception of the "meltine pot." It is going to require mountain-moving faith to put over some parts of the Klan program. But the right sort of Klansmen have mountainmoving faith.

Time was when there may havejbeen reason for the thought that the Ku Klux Klan is a band of cut-throats and outlaws. There is no longer the slightest pretext for such an impression to get lodgment In an intelligent American mind. All Protestants have had ample opportunity to get official Klan literature and learn from wholly responsible sources the truth about this patriotic order. When an atack Is made upon the Klan,. either by physical force or by the controlled press, it is now known to informed American men and women that such an attack Is aimed at Protestants. The Ku Klux Klan Is composed exclusively of Protestants. It is functioning for Protestants as the Knights

of Columbus function for Roman Catholics and as the B'nai B'rlth functions for the Jews. Let this fact sink deep into the minds of all Protestants. They will then understand that attempts to break up and drive out the Klan are the equivalent of attempts to suppress Protestant faith and to ob

literate Protestant institutions. Two outstanding Instances recently emphasized the striking and unmistakable attitude of big newspapers In their appraisement of news values.
