Priest Becomes Active. Letter to Pope Asks That Edict Be Issued Against Vandalism Roman College Students Appear to Bo Worst Offenders in Fight Against All Things Protestn. In America. -The destruction of Bibles placed by the Gideons in hotel L'uc-st rooms has at last reached the stage where the matter has been taken up directly with the pope of Rome. A letter to the pope, written by Ernest L. Yogel, Sr., president of the Illinois organization of Gideons, followed a protest to Archbishop Mundclcin, of Chicago, some months ago. Since that time the archbishop h is been made a Cardinal in the Roman Catholic chjix'h. When the courtesy of a reply was not received from Cardinal Idundelein, Mr. Vogel wrote directly to the pope asking that an edict be issued by him to stop the mutilation of Gideon Bibles by Roman Catholic lay members and Roman priests. The facsimile at the bottom of this column of the flyleaf in one of the mutilated Bibles returned sh ows the activities of priests in this particular line of endeavor. Hides Dope in Bible. The Bible pictured at the top of the page was used by an alien to conceal drugs. The Bible was used as evidence in a case in Ardmorc, Okla., in which case a conviction was! obtained. The alien was arrested in a hotel and the officers were about to give up hope of finding evidence in his room when one of them nicked r - i viii Lb stand. Hearing a peculiar sound, he opened the book and found inside a dopeuscr's outfit and a quantity of narcotics. The alien had been suspected for some time but nothing could be shown against him. The finding of the Bible, the pages of which had been cut out in the center of the book, was enough to bring about a conviction. The alien had been suspected of furnishing dope to certain young men of the city. Continued efforts on the part of the officials finally resulted !n his arrest and conviction. Onj? of the peculiar aspects of the continued mutilation of Gideon Bibles in the many hotels is that the hatu of the Roman corporation seems to be directed at tho Twelfth Flyleaf of Blbln returned to GUIron h,!fte, Th "Index" spoken or is Usi of book banned by pope of fUra and which I Ionian Catholics are forbidden to read.
Chapter of Romans. It is at this chapter of the Bible that the Holy Writ lies open on the altar of all Klan klaverns. From this fact it is learned that the hate of the Roman corporation is not only being vented on what it pleases to call the "Protestant" Bible, but at the Kti Klux Klan as well. Information Bureau Busy. At this particular time there is an effort being made by Roman Catholic organizations to create among Protestants the belief that the Roman corporation advises its subjects to read the Bible. Or, that the Bible is "an open book" in Roman Catholic homes. Some of these organizations are carrying paid advertisements in large daily newspapers. Recently there was organized what is known as the Catholic Information B u r e a u, an organization which had its birth at a convention of the Knights of Columbus. This organization, which has headquarters in Indianapolis, does much ad vertising in the daily newspapers. J Among other things, the in-! formation bureau tries to con-! vey the idea concerning the Bible and Roman Catholics.! The uninformed would believe, after reading the advertisements, that the Roman Catholic reads nis Bible studiously, or in other words, that there is no restriction upon the Roman Catholic in regard to the reading of the Bible. One cannot, however, believe both the advertisements and what the Roman corporation says on this subject. Rome curtails the reading of the Bible by Roman Catholics and permits it only under certain restrictions. In substantiation of this statement, it may be pointed out that one of the restrictions are that "in order to put her children on guard against all danger of error, s;he (the Roman hierarchy) docs not permit the Bible to be read in the vernacular, unless the translation has been approved and is accompanied by notes." The quoted lines, parentheses ours, are copied verbatim from an official Roman Catholic textbook. Bible Barred to Catholics. This, of course, bars any Roman Catholic from taking advantage of the Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms, even though he wished to. In one instance at least a Roman Catholic priest has taken the liberty to remind anv Roman Catholic who might have pick ed up the Gideon Bible, that it is "on the Index." For the information of the reader it is explained that "the Index" is a list of books banned by

the Roman ecclesiastical empire, and are forbidden. According to the rules and regulations of Rome, a Roman Catholic reads any forbidden book on the pain of ex-cora-municanon. The continued effort of Rome to deny to the Protestant world that which she teaches to her Roman Catholic subjects is one of the many things which reflect on Rome. The mutilation of Bibles in hotel rooms, to the mind of any sane person, is merely an indictment of Roman principles and actions and in no way harms the Protestant. It can only be assumed that the Roman Catholic can have no respect for a book which he knows is "on the Index" and which to his mind, is so bad that to read it would cause his church to ex-communicate him. At this time the Gideon society is busy replacing the mutilated Bibles as rapidly as they are returned to headquarters. At the bottom of this page is the picture of one of the Bibles returned. It is shown to have been torn. Many of the Bibles are not torn or mutilated in that way, but inscriptions written in them are so vulgar that they are sent back and, if possible, erasures made. If it is found impossible to remove the writ ing or printing without defacing the book, it is placed with those beyond repair. Bibles Thrown Out Windows. Many times the Bibles are stolen or destroyed. There is one instance reported wherein members of a Roman Catholic college football team, stopping at a hotel in St. Louis, threw the Bibles from the windows. It appears that at this time students in Roman Catholic colleges and universities are the worst offenders against Protestantism (outside the Roman dignitaries themselves) who are showing their venom against nonCatholic activities. It has been pointed out that these students are more close 3 Dfv m( mitt tit tTr. ud fUyp IfcO WJJ KfCUsU IMam ' tkv- pvc ami fcsaj uitki tM$ yui. ly associated with Roman Catholic doctrines at the time they are in college and that this is probably the cause of their many vitriolic acts. The riot created by the students of Notre Dame. Roman Cath olic college located near South Bend, Indiana, was one of the most brutal staged by the Roman Catholic alien element since the inception of a united and active Protestantism. In that riot the American flag was torn to shreds by the students, and Protestant men, women and children were brutally attacked and beaten. That the raid on Gideon Bibles is the outgrowth of the Roman system of teaching is the belief of thousands. Rome casts a stigma and boycott on a certain thing and it immediately becomes a common subject of attack 'y Roman followers. The continued drumming into the" heads of Romans residing in America, as well as elsewhere, that all things non-Roman Catholic are to be held in disrespect, is the cause of the vandalism and outrageous acts of the pope's subjects in all parts of America. The Gideon Bibles are naturally held in contempt by Roman Catholics on account of the teachings of Rome. The attack on these Bibles occasions no surprise to those who are well-informed on the working of the Roman corporation. The Gideons, how ever, are replacing Bibles as rapidly as possible and the number of these honks sn placed is gradually becoming greater, despite the fact that many of the books distributed are merely rerdacinor Bibles that have been stolen, destroy ed or mutilated. At one place in the, letter to the pope, Mr. Vogel spoke of the St. Louis incident concerning the football players. An excerpt from his letter follows: "The occurrence at St. Louis, Mo., in the Marquette hotel, we absolutely can verify. As I stated in my letter we are not living in a pagan age, and we are liberal enough to believe that the t Taw'sAiecU sauhn ! . Tlu-V Usd Wr nsB, 14 cegtsstsj of Mulilatsd Bible Returned

An Edict Asked. "So I present this matter to you and your kindest consideration, and trust that you will do as suggested in my letter and send an edict to America, instructing all who are connected with y-o u r church to discontinue destining copies of the Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms or insti tutions where we place them." I he multilatmg of the Bibles placed in hotels aptly displays the bitterness and hatred now held by the Roman Catholic against all things Protestant. The vulgar and brutal display of intolerance now being indulged in by the Roman hierarchy can only be branded a3. most characteristic of that corporation. 1. tt.w Hirht hait w w llsTtii.
