Papal Threats to Be Used In Campaign Against Sterling-Heed Law Calls It Vicious"
(By John Eight-Point) Men make laws, but events shape their course despite them. We Americans are surroundedvby the logic of things as they are and make progress because we understand and can adapt realities. We may change the shape o a water course, but as long as the force of gravity functions we must provide for the outlet. American nature is like the irresistible water in a river. We may harness it with "shalls" and "shall nots," but the "gravitational forco" exists and shapes events.

Leaders of tho Roman Catholic demonstrations against the French government declare that they will continue to agitate the question until the "usual appropriation" is made in support of the Roman Catholic schools In Alsace-Lorraine and until steps are taken to continue the embassy to the Vatican. Stricter enforcement of the laws
against Roman Catholic organizations of priests and lay brotherhoods has also poured oil on the fire. But through all this Fremeir Herriot does not seem to be either worried or bluffed. In France the gov

The Knights have organized what they choose to call a "Truth Society,"
which will conduct the publicity campaign. A lengthy statement, denouncing in general those who have attacked Catholicism, informs the readers that every effort will bo made to counterart the "campaign of bigotry" which it is claimed has been made against the church.

AUSTIN. Tex., Dec. 29. Rumors are flying thick and fast around the capital regarding the personnel of the ofifcial family when the Fergusons take office as governors of Texas.
It Is taken for granted that most of the Ferguson appointees will be
taken from the ranks of the Ferguson regime back in 1911. Many of these former officials have announced their intention of moving to Austin after January, although no definite announcement of appointments have been forthcoming from either "Ma" or "Jim." The public may be assured, however, that the age-old political adage, "to the victor belongs the spoils," will be carefully and punctually remembered.
No man or woman known to have been
opposed to anything heretofore
by "Proxy'

leaning toward the Klan, he will have to work If he wishes to make Austin
his home, for there will be no state funds available for his support. As It Shonld Be. All of which is as it should be. For had the result of the recent election In this state been different, one can hardly Imagine that Fergusonltes would have been apointed to any positions of trust. In the meantime "Proxy" Jim is covering the state, he Is holding meet
ings first in east Texas, then in south Texas, and then in north Texas. He is tremendously busy "bringing in water and wood" and seeing that the lamps are properly trimmed for his
wife when she takes the office of gov
ernor next month. Crowds Promise Support. Everywhere Jim goes the crowds gather and great speeches are made testifying to the undying loyalty of the speakers to the incoming administration.
Preparations are being made for the Inaugural ball, which is expected to eclipse anything previously attempted in Austin. So announcement has been made as to who will lead the grand march with the new governor; however, this is not necessary, for she
will doubtless lean on "Jim" on this occasion Just as she will during the term of office. And this is in accordance with the pre-election expectations of not only those who opposed "Fergusonism," but those who made possible the election of the wife of the impeached governor.

The East Side, he says, "has brought splotches of the old world coloring that makes life so interesting here." But few Americans have other than hazy conception of the East Side and are but dimly conscious that the East Side is composed of foreigners. And that many thousands of these foreigners can not speak the English language and those that can read, read foreign language newspapers as they are unable to read English, and, in addition to that, prefer everything with the foreign twang to it.

syndicate writer will no doubt be interesting to the. reader and will be repeated here. In the East Side there are now living 800,000 Italians more than the number residing in Naples. Eight hundred thousand! According to the census of 1920, there are only three cities in America having as many as 800,000 persons in them.
This city of Italians, within the confines of New York City, is larger thair any city in America with the exception of New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago. I In New York City there are 1,000,-
000 Jews and by far the greater portion of them live on the East Side. Also living on the East Side are more Irish than there are in Dublin, Cork and Limerick: more Germans than there are in Munich. When added to these, . tha Hungarians, Russians, Turks and many other nationalities.
the East Side becomes one vast foreign city within the borders of the United States. Rlxty-Xlne Foreign Papers "Sixty-nine newspapers," says the syndicate writer, "printed In foreign languages,-are printed on the East
Side. There, ara a dozen quarters In
which there is not a word of English
spoken, From tha facta given by the syndicate writer,- one may begin to comprehend just what conditions exist in New York, In tha election in Novem
ber, AI Smith was elected governor. Outside oi New York City ha was hopelessly outdistanced by Colonel Rooaeyelt but when tha vote of New York City waa tabulated, It was shown that -. Smith's majority In Gotham was great enough to. over-, coma Roosevelt's lead in the state, la other words, this huge city of forsigners cast lt vU tot Al Smith,
and as a result Al Smith went into office. "Without the East Side," eays the writer, "the city would not be New York." His words are no doubt true, for New York is looked upon by the rest of tho country as, more or less, a great' seething mass of foreigners. It is out of the East Side that come
gun men, the most vicious citizens of
the underworld. It is on the East
Side that millions of foreigners live, read foreign-language newspapers, think foreign thoughts and indulge In foreign customs. It is littered with quarters where no word of English is spoken. Too Many Enrt Sides"
Yet, there are those who will contend that these foreigners are being assimilated. There are those who would not close the gates to the millions who would coma Into America, From out of the East Side rolled the voto that put Al Smith in office.
Where are the true Americans who want more "East Sides" in our country? Unfortunately,. America . has other "East Sides," and Just as large, proportionate with .-the locality in which they are situated, where the will of the American voter is voided by the foreigner who cleaves to foreign newspapers, customs, habits and moral, standards. Does not the East Side in New York
