Intolerance:
Who Is Practicing It in the United States?
Since th Organization of the Knferhts of t!ie Ku Klux Klan, the Word "Intolerance" Has Been Applied to Protestants by Officials of the Roman Hierarchy, Who Formerly Boasted of Their Own "Intolerance," The Roman Corporation of Late Has Tried to Shift to Protestantism the DIame for Intolerance in America. In This Series of Articles a Special Writer for The Fiery Cross Is Telling Trnthfnlly and Clearly the Facts of the Practice of Intolerance in This Country. Editor's Note.

ARTICLE 4 THE fact that Roman Catholics enjoy absolute religious freedom in this country, as was set forth in these columns last week, is proof that Protestants are tolerant. It was likewise pointed out that Protestants so far outnumber Roman Catholics in this country that if it were the Protestants' nature they could enforce "the rule of the majority." The truth remains, however, that the Roman Catholic minority enjoys all the liberties insured to
Americans Dy tne constitution.

man or woman, becomes a member of the Ku Klux Klan (and approximately 7.000.000 of them tiavel that his, or her. nature Is suddenly changed; and that from a tolerant cltii. ii the new member Is turned over night into an Intolerant, bigoted person ready to do injury to any person who does not believe as he does? To he tolerant is bred in the blood of Protestants. This true statement would not be made were it not a selfevident fact. It is but necessary to again point to America, the lending- and first truly Protestant country in the world, to substantiate the statement .lust made, that tolerance is bred in the blood of the Protestant. Priest I pliolds Inquisition. However, on the other hand, we will reprint a statement which appeared in "The Western Watchman." a Pomnn Catholic paper published in St. I-ouis. and edited and controlled by a Roman Catholic priest. The statement follows: ' The church has persecuted. Only a tyro in church history will deny that. . . . One hundred and fifty years after Constrmtine the Donatis'.s were persecuted. Rnd sometimes put to (loath. . . . Protestants were persecuted in France and Spain with full approval of the church authorities. We have always defended the persecution of the Hugenots. and the Spanish Inquisition. Wherever and whenever there is honest jCatholiiity there will be cleft- distinction drawn between truth and error. When she tliinlis it good to use physical force, she will use it." Thus are we brought from the Spanish Inquisition; the burning of .loan of Arc at the stake by the Roman Catholic Corporation, which afterward made her a Saint, down to the present day thiret for blood of the "heretic" (as Protestants are in the eyes of the Roman Catholic) and which thirst precipitated the dastardly nttack r.t. Xiles. Ohio, on Protestants gathering thero for a meeting and parade on November first of the present year. Ready to Hurl Bombs. Before entering Into details of what took place there a paragraph from the report of the outrage as carried In "The New York Herald and Tribune." may not be amiss. The paragraph says: "Members of the Flaming Circle were plentifully -Buppliert with revolvers, knives, clubs and stones, and In addition home-made dynamite bombs, which, their spokesman asserted, they intended to hurl among the mart hers (Klansnien) if there was no other way to stop the parade." Thus it Is seen that the words of "The Western Watchman," are literally carried out. He said: "When she (the Roman Catholic Church) thinks it is good to use physical force, she will tio it. The Knights of The Flaming Circle, a Roman Catholic organization, founded by a Rman Catholic priest and the editor of a Roman Catholic publication, and for the purpose of combatting the Ku Klux Klan. displayed ail the tyranny, Intolerance, hate and thirst to maim and inflict physical suffering on those opposed to the domitiition of the Roman Catholic Corporation. Reglnning early on the morning of November first, at about two o'clock, the Knights of The Flaming Circle set nbout to wound, maim, beat, torture and kill Protestants. Men were pulled from automobiles and kicked and beaten into unconsciousness. On one occasion three men were dragged into an armed camp set un by the members of the Roman Catholic organization, and stabbed and shot. These acts are not myths; they were carried broadcast throughout the country by press wires and carried In all newspapers newspapers that are oponsd to th" Klan. "The Knights of The Flaming Circle," says The New York Herald and Tribune, "sworn foes of the Klan. set out to prevent the Klan from parading through Niles. . . . The Klan held no parade although there were 30,000 member- of the order at an encampment one mile rii.i'V of Niles." TI ' ty thousand Klansmen one mile distant! Does t ot idin one statement- and the paper was correct -give much food for thought? Where are those who charge Klansmen take the law into thoir own hands? Whre ara those who charge Klansmen with disrespect for law and order. Thirty thousand Klansmen asse mMed at one spot and yet. with Individual Klansmen b"ir ; attneked by Roman thugs at other points In the vicinity, these Klansmen left to the authorities, the duty of arresting and stopping the oturages. On the ii'li'i- hand, suppose for Instance, Klansmen held the san e hate, the same lack of respect for tho laws of ojn country, and the same belief in "using force" as voiced by The Western Watchman? What would have been the result? This brings the thought to the reader, possibly, as to Just what would be the result in this country If Protestants, out-numbering Roman Catholics' to such a great extent, would uso the same Intolerant methods as used by the Roman Catholics? l)os the reader believe in that case, that the Knights of Co'iimbu.3 could march peacefully down the streets of .mi- American cities? Des the reader believe that on St. Patrick's Dav, Roman Catholic Irish could ma .-eh peacefully along our streets especially in cominunlllcs where they are out-numbered by Protestants many, many times? "Intolerance" Cry Is Pure Camouflage. And yet, this cry of intolerance is not set up against the Roman Catholic it Is being used by Roman Catholics in an effort to destroy the strongest Protestant organization which ever existed on this earth. It is camouflage, pure and simple, but is more or less ef
fective among those who are not familiar with the creed, principles and purposes of the Klan. To those who will give serious thought to the entire matter it will be seen that Just what the Ku Klux Klan contends that America Is In need of such an organization to save it from the domination of foreigners and the Roman Corporation Is true. Incidents such as the Niles affair, prove it beyond all equivocation. And, unfortunately, the Niles affair is but one of scores, or rather, one of hundreds differing in degree from attacks on lone Klansmen. such as are being conducted at Cincinnati where Klansmen are kidnapped, taken to lonely spots and stripped of their clothing and terribly beaten after which they are thrown nude Into the downtown streets, to such damnable outrages as that at Niles. But Just what happened before the Niles outrage? Weeks before the date set for the Protestant meeting, (he Klan secured a permit to hold a parade. When thi became known to the members of The Knights of the Flaming Circle, and that was immediately as the news was given out to the newspapers in the regular routine of business, these Romaa Catholics demanded that the permit for the Protestants to parade, be revoked. This the mayor refused to take any action on. declaring that the Klan organization was a legal order and that his actionln Issuing the permit was perfectly wlthin his rights and that the Klan has every right, legal and otherwise, to parade. Mayor's Home Is Bombed. This brought down the fury of the foreigners on his head and on October 29, tho home of the mayor was bombed. The mayor and his wife, asleep in a room abov the room which was wrecked, escaped with minor bruises. It should be remembered that The Knights of The Flaming Circle is but one of the Roman Catholic organizations throughout the country which is crying that the Klan is intolerant. But never once have these persons or organizations shown where the Klan Is intolerant. In one of the foregoing paragraphs it was stated that tolerance is bred in the blood of Protestants. While the many things in our own country substantiate this statement beyond all shadow of a doubt. It might be well to point out that In other countries where the Protestant Is in the tnajority, religious freedom Is also enjoyed by Roman Catholics. In Switzerland, Sweden. England, Norway and Denmark, for Instance, the Roman Catholic has religious freedom and does not suffer from intolerance. They . are Protestant countries. But, what of the Protestant's rights In such countries as Spain. Mexico, Brazil and other countries in which the Roman Catholic Corporation holds sway? The Protestant has none. In Spain Protestantism is virtually banned. We have just said that tolerance Is bred In the blood of the Protestant; but what about the Roman Catholic? Does not history, from the very inception of the Roman Catholic Corporation, show the Roman Catholic Intolerant? Naturally, the Roman Catholic here In America will deny he is intolerant. Possibly, this may be true in some cases, but nevertheless that doe not mean that Klansmen are intolerant. Neither does It dissipate the fact that the rankest intolerance ia being practiced against the Klansmen by Roman Catholics. Can we be censured for declaring that Intolerance is bred into Roman Catholics when all facts bear out the assertion? "The Same Yesterday and Today." In the sixteenth century, or approximately four hundred years ago. the Spanish Inquisition (upheld by The Western Watchman, edited by a Roman Catholic priest) was under way. The horrible tortures undergone by "heretics" at the hands of the Roman Catholic Church are too sickening to touch on here. Remember, that was centuries ago, and yet. In Niles, Ohio. U. S. A., on November 1. 1924, Klansmen ("Protstant heretics," remember) weresho t, stabbed and beaten by a howling mob of Roman Catholics. That the spirit of the Spanish Inquisition still forges through the blood of those gangsters who refuse the rights they themselves enjoy, to others, we will quota from the story of the outrage which appeared In the Youngstown Vindicator, published a few miles from Niles: "Dragged from their bullet ridden car, two Klansmen were taken to tho field of The Knights of The Flaming Circle and shot, both perhaps fatally." Other Klansmen (Protestants and "heretics") w-er dragged to that same field, an armed camp set up by the members of the circle, and beaten and stabbed. It seems inconcelvablo that some Protestants can be so ill Informed about the Klan, that they still believe it Intolerant. Or, to be more exact, it seems impossible that any Protestant, despite the fact that dally papers are filled with propaganda coming from Rome, can not see that it is the enemies of the Klan who are practicing intolerance and not the Klan. Is Natural For Roman Catholics. It is quite natural that Roman Catholics could believe it intolerant. Their teachings are such that they can but believe that anything which opposes the Roman Catholic hierarchy don't confuse that opposition as being oposition to the Roman Catholic's right to worship as he desires) is intolerant. In article five, to appear next week, it will be shown why the Roman Catholic, through the teachings of the Roman hierarchy, can believe a person intolerant simply because that person can not accept the teachings as laid down by the Roman Catholic church and wishes, to the contrary, to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience.

(By a Staff Correspotuleiit) CHICAGO, Nov. 24. What may well be a Roman plot to weaken and disorganize tho public school system in this, the nation's second city is seen in the constant propaganda carried on against Superintendent William McAndrew by the Teachers' Federation, an organization led by Miss Margaret Haley, business agent, who is a Roman Catholic, as are a large number of the public school teachers. The aitacbs upon the superintendent are only n part of the propaganda, however. Roman Catholics in executive positions are constantly beins exposed in their efforts to impair the efficiency of the puhlic school system and a well-organized publicity program is carried out whenever there is an opportunity to compare the public with the parochiat sehoo systems
to the disadvantage of the
Protestant parents are seriouslyalarmed by the situation. They wonder why Roman Catholics are permitted to teach in schools against which the hierarchy has so frequently expressed its enmity. They can not
expect their children to be tfiven eflictent instruction by teachers whose allegiance and first duty is obedience to the pope, arch enemy of public instruction. That Protestants are awakening to the seriousness of the situation and are getting behind the superintendent, ;i Presbyterian, was shown at the bimonthly meeting of the hoard of edu
cation when ho scored a triple victory
over his opponents. What influence the Klan has exerted to bring the public to a realization of the menace of Rome-ruled public schools is a matter for conjecture. At any rate, according to Sir. Hearst's "Klan-killing" Herald-Examiner, "the superintendent's first score was chalked up when tho board voted. 6 to 1, to pass his amendment to the rules compelling teachers to meet with their principals outside of school hours. "His second success came when the same majority upheld his resolution to invalidate principals' certificates issued more than six years ago. "His third success came when
President Charles M
into the records a letter from Mrs. .loseph T. Bowen on behalf of the Woman's City Club. "Tt not only conveyed that organization's confidence in Mr. McAndrew's ability, but urged that lie-be Kiven 'the hlRhest authority in" the administration of educational affairs unhampered by the action of his subordinates. "Chicago school teachers have been fighting the superintendent's proposed ruling to empower principals to call meetings after school hours except on Fridays. They argue that their working day ends with the dismissal bell. "Mr. Hanson disturbed the calm with a report from himself to the school management committee. In it he urged the establishment of a Board of Education textbook bureau to curb waste and standardize Chicago manuals. "He also complained that some of Chicago's high school students today
are studying textbooks that long ago have outlived their usefulness.
" 'Take the Carl Schurz high school's recent requisition for 1,500 copies of Milne's High School Algebra,' he began, waving aloft the self-same requisition, one of which at his instance is still pending before the board. " 'That book is thirty-two years old. It's so obsolete that it still teaches children of this Volstead age their algebra in terms of bottles of sherry and cases of whisky.' "
(Special to The Fiery Cross) EL PASO, Tex., Nov. 24. Support of the Sterling-Reed bill, establishing a federal department of education, was voiced iu a resolution passed by the American Federation of Labor iu its annual convention here. The Sterling-Reed bill was vigorously fought by the Roman Catholic hierarchy in the last session of congress, because it is designed to assist the public schools of America, to which the papacy is avowedly opposed. "The American Federation of I.nlior believes that an approprintion of $100,000,000 n year for state aid . Is necessary for the purpose of equalizing educational opportunities, Heemovinff illitcrr.cy, promoting: physical education, improving lenehing and eneonrnisviiit educational rexenrrh,'' the resolution reads. The delegates also passed resolutions favoring the ratification of the child labor amendment, which Roman Catholics are opposing; indorsing the American Region campaign for $.,- 000,000 for rehabilitation: authoriz-

Klansmen of Dallas county are about to give serious consideration to a far-reaching building- program which will probably exceed in its proportions any ever put on by Klansmen in the entire nation. Dallas Klan Ko. 66, lojig known as the largest Klan in Texas, and one of the largest single organizations in the country, does not at this time own its own Klavern. Neither does the Oak Cliff Klan. (Special to The Fiery Cross) BROOKLYN, Nov. 24. Indignation runs high in the Bedford section ot this city on account of the insult to the American flag and American uniform by John 1. Smith, a priest of the St. Louis Romaa Catholic clrarch at Ellery street near Nostrand avenue, while officiating at the funeral of Prank Eich, Jr., a 13-year-old Boy Scout of his parish. The priest refused to allow the American Hag which draped the coffin of the boy to be brought into tho church and also forbade the sixty Boy Scouts from Troops No. 110, No. 295, and No. 159, accompanying the body of their dead comrade, to enter the church while wearing the uniform of the Boy Scout. In the face of the pleas of Fred Bruckman, Jr., 645 Park avenue, a cousin of the dead scout and a member of the scouts
himself, that the uniform which he wore was an honorable uniform, tha priest was obdurate. The priest said that "if you go home and change into your other clothes, I will let you in. But not in that uniform." The boys were compelled to remain on the outside of the church with their flag until the funeral mass was over, when they redraped the coffin with the national colors and proceeded with the body to St. John's cemetery for burial. This transpired at the door of tha church when the priest came out to meet the procession which had proceeded from 89 Nostrand avenue, the boy's home. The Boy Scouts were In charge of Frances J. Hill, scoutmaster of Troop No. 110, and deputy scoutmaster of the Bedford district. Parents, relatives and friends of the lad residing in the parish were greatly incensed at the priest's action and Frank Kich, the boy's father, was especially outspoken, declaring that he had paid the priest $25 for the mass and that his boy had been cheated out of the funeral arranged
i for him. An investigator reports that
the people of this parish are very poor and that the priest lives in comfortable quarters and is said to have three automobiles.
