Intolerance:
Who Is Practicing It in the United States?
Since the Organization of the Knights of the Kn Klux Klan, the Word "Intolerance" Has Been Applied to Protestants by Officials of the Roman Hierarchy, Who Formerly Boasted of Their Own "Intolerance." The Roman Corporation of Late Has Tried to Shift to Protestantism the Blame for Intolerance in America. In This Series of Articles a Special AVriter for The Fiery Cross Is Telling Truthfully and Clearly the Facts of the Practice of Intolerance In This Country. Editor's Note.
ARTICLE 3 T WAS pointed out last week that beautifully-phrased sentences, "negative insinuations" and declarations made by persons opposing the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan can not dispel the facts as they exist. Vehement speeches by Roman Catholic orators, well-worded
editorials by followers of the papacy and ridiculous statements by Roman Catholic dignitaries can not gloss over the fact that Protestants have ever been tolerant ; neither can they refute the fact that mobbing of non-Catholics throughout the country does take place and that it is
a rank snow 01 intolerance.

FIVE SISTERS GIVE ASSUMED NAMES IN OHIO
(By a Stuff Correspondent) DETROIT, Mich;, Nov. 17. Today tho question on the minds of all Detroit citizens Is: "Who will be our next mayor?" There is no doubt In the nilmls of thousands of citizens that Charles Bowles was really elect
ed, but as John W. Smith was given a majority by those who handled the returns, it will mean a recount and possibly court proceedings to put in office the man who many believe wa3 really elected. The newspapt I'M woro umlor the impression th;it If they could make the puiiiio believe the rare for mayor was n religious fight, an; that f'harles P.owles was a Kbm candidal", thr-y could easily swing the election to either Smith or Joseph A. Martin, both members of the Knights of Columbus. Plot Fail This, however, proved a complete failure, and the word spread by tho new spnpers, connecting the name of HowI.h with that of tbc Klan. made Howies more'? votes than could have been valued in any other manner. Martin, a poor third in the race. In absolutely out of the running and, p I ' I'oinjli to all appearances, Smith Hosed out by a narrow margin, there Is plenty of room for doubt. In fact, there is so much room for doubt as to th" outcome, that Howies has demanded a recount, and in the minds of all those who wish to see fair play there is ample reason. In the primaries, when Smith, Ton les and Martin ran for "best two cut of three," the rare between
Howies and Martin was so close that there was a question as to who would run against Smith. The political machinery was all in Martin's favor, however, and although a recount in thy primaries was first thought to tie the only way to put Bowles In the race where citizens believed him to rightly belong, it was later decided that he run on a "sticker ticket." Three-Cornered Hare It was his entry in the race In thir manner thrft caused tho threecornered race, and to prove that he boat Msrtin in the primaries, the vot

In the foregoing n;uagra:ih we spoke of declarations mailo by perrons "as if" a certain thing were true. In all attacks on the Klan. other than the many physical attacks on Klansmen and Klanswomen (and In many case:: Protestants who do not belong to the Klan one can note this "as If" basis on which the attack is founded. Reasoning Based On "As Ifs" The Roman Catholic oornoration is well aware that, to tine the words of Hans Vnihinger. the average man Is accustomed to reason that, "since this la so. it follows that ." The entire reasoning: ?1 of those onposed to the Klan Is based on those "ns ifi" built tip by Die higher uns who would destroy the KIrtn hecv.iso of their own selfish reasons and because Amerlcnrlsm Is so different from the Roman thoory. Tho followers of Romrvrism, as well as a number o? Protestants, express their opnositlon to the Ki.an because of n.vths built up for them bv the "nsifists." That is. these
persons are not basing their oiinosit'on on a true basis they pre noting "ns if" the Klan had dono that or ".as if" Die Klan had done this. therefore, when an (itt'or declares that lie is for re'Sirbuis freedom, bis statement is iinr-'ed'-fe'v construeil as ag-iinat ,,, Kl:n. The "asists" have 1"i!t a mvth in which the K?an litis its basis on onnosi'on to religions freer'otn. Tim misguided are again pipg Ute "as if" theory. Recently Governor Smith, of New York, stated !n a speech that a baby Christened by -a minister belonging to the Klan. was having hate breathed into It. Smith knew he could say that before that particular audience because he had helned build up the thought among those particular people "as if tho Klan was built on hate. Followers of Myths. Simeon Rtrunsky, writing: in The New York Times, says: "Men are divisible into the few who make use of myths, knowing them to bo such, and the many who are urged on or drawn forward by the myth, believintr it t bo true." The foregoing paragraph aptly describes certain condi'ions which todnv obtain in ' connection with the Klan. In one division are those men who have manufactured the myths against the Klan and those who believe those myths and base all their so-called reasoning aKlnst the Klan. They are using those "as Kb" on which to found their objections and in so doing have lost track entirely of the true status of matters. This it Is that those orators, editors arid other ficr.ta hard at work In their futile effort to destroy the Klan and paint it black, never have to substantiate their crude, ridiculous and wholly unwarranted statements. They have, by lnsidiuous propaganda, and auto suggestion, as used by the Roman corporation, built up gigantic myths and made "asit'sts" of millions of Americans. For illustration, let the reader f-!ve long and earnest thought to the matter and try to find where, if possible, he has knowledge that the Klan is intolerant. Or where it Is practicing intolerance'. True, he will no doubt remember reading rnnnv times that it Is intolerant but when he reads It. the author of what he read did not point out why Die Klan was intolerant, nor substantiate his statement. Fifirrs Explode Mvtli.s These myths built up for the 'asifistscan not stand the light of logical reasoning. As an Illustration: About one year ago stories began to appear :n newspapers that negroes were emigrating north because of the Klan in the South, and that It was working hardship on Hie South. It was pointed out by certain nnti-Klan leaders of the South that the negro was frightened bv Die Ilan because the Klan had F"t about to work fe-reat injury to the negro. AntiK'.en papers la the North took up the en' and attempted to paint the Klan most vicious. P.ut what was the truth? The truth was that the States into which most of the negroes wre going, Illinois. Indi-.-o:i, (ili'o. and Michigan, have more Klansmen in I' t! in any other four States in the Union. Were D"';o nrgfoes molested and harmed by these Klansmen? Absolutely not. "While in connection with Dis. it might be well to point out that official figures, loth governmental and those sent out by Tuskogee, ro'o-ed institute, show that with the growth of the Kt m. 1y rollings have steadily decreased, in the South
as weli as the North. The decrease In the past two years lias been greatly in excess of fifty per cent. Thus" is on;: of the myths exploded that is, except among Die "aslfists" who still build their condenmat'o.i of the Klan upon the basis of "as if." But once let these "asiflstn" see the truth and it will be mighty 1. a I'd for the Roman system'u agents; when they writ" ur assert that Protestants (we say Protestants because the actual fight is being made against Protestantism while hiding behind Klan "as its") are bigoted and Intolerant, they will have to show why. hen that stage Is reached, their propaganda will become null and void because they can give no rea6o,i for their statements. Hotnan leaders Rejruile Public, Recently, speaking before an Italian Club In Baltimore. Archbishop Curley, of the Roman Catholic Cor
poration, stated that Roman Catholics were being discriminated against in the Veterans Bureau. Immediately his followers took this statement "as if" true. The fact of the matter Is, and actual figures will prove it. that the Veterans Bureau is a hotbed of Roman Catholics. Uiicontrovertable facts prove this; but those leaders of the "as lfs" do not wish to make use of facts facts show that Intolerance Is being practiced against Protestants a never before. So long as they can make use of the "as ifs" these leaders of the Roman Corporation will use them to beguile a sleeping public. On October 18, a meeting scheduled by Protestants, of whom, It was estimated at least thirty thousand -would attend, was called off at South Bend. Indiana, because of the fear of loss of life. It was called off by the Protestants because of the many threats from
Roman Catholic sources and because It was learned from sources, the authenticity of which could not bo questioned. thaTa riot would start if they attempted to meet. The Protestants were not laboring under a bugaboo, because just five months before when they attempted to ho".d a meeting in the same city, students of Notre Dame, Roman Catholic institute, created a riot In which men, women and children (all Protestants! were beaten, slugged and knocked down and kicked; Klan headquarters stoned and all windows broken out, and American flags ripped to pieces. The Mob Spirit. It would take a wide stretch of imagination to reason that these Protestants were going to gatber there to. start a riot among themselves on October IS. It even seems impossible that the most rabid "aslfist" could believe that these thousands of Protestants would call a meeting in South Bend to create a fight among themselves in which their wives, mothers, sweethearts and sisters would be called vile names, knocked down and beaten as they were on May 17. when the Notre Danw students precipitated what was called a riot for the want of a better name, possibly, when In reality the whole affair was nothing more nor less than a brutal and vicious physical assault bn Protestant men and women who received no police protection from Roman Catholic policemen. And Ko real effort was made to stop the gangsters until Protestant policemen were sent Into the whirling mobs about the city, late in the afternoon and began arresting students and filled the jail with them. (And they were afterwards released without so much as even a trial.) On the other hand, does it seem quite probable . that if these thousands of Protestants had scheduled the meeting at South Bend because they wished to start p. riot, that they would have called it off to save lives which might have been sacrificed had they met? Give deep thought to it, and see if it is possible to recall any time when a Roman Catholic meeting was called off because Protestants Klansmen or nonKlansmen threatened to disrupt it or interfered in any way. Protestants, including all Klansmen, do not practice such intolerance. Another Cunning Myth. The "aslfists", however, cry out that the Klan si-ioald die and that it is against the Roman Catholic religion. Another myth cunningly manufactured by the higher-ups. The Klan Is not against the Roman Catholic's religion. When a Roman Catholic declares the Klrin Is against bis religion, he automatically admits (whether true or not) that part of bis relicion is flootlinK this ronntry with undesirable Immigrants; following the dictates of a foreign ruler as to how to cast his vote; that he believes in the lnfer-marriage of wlt'te people and negros: that a foreign rnler is mightier than our own President: that, he is agaiitst. onr nublic school system and many other un-American things. Tho things mentioned are all opposed by the Klansmen of America, with the exception of the public school system. If those questions jur,t touched on are not a part of his religion, how can be claim the Klan is opposed to his religion? and that it is Intolerant? Will any Roman Catholic declare publicly that part of his religion is for the pope of Rome to rule America? Yes, the Kian is opposed to that. But it is opposed to any foreigner dictating the policies or laws of America. For any person-to insist that the Klan is opposed to Roman Catholics worshiping as
they so desire, ov, in other words, against their religion, then he insists that part of the Roman Catholic's religion is that the pope of Rome, through his agents in this country, acting on the behalf of the Roman Corporation, should operate this country. h"s way regardless of what Americans might think about It. Facts Prove Protestant Tolerance. The very fact that Roman Catholics in America have religious freedom when even now, after this country has been swamped in late years by Roman Catholic Immigrants, they are outnumbered fifteen to one, proves to any mind ready to accept facts Instead of "as ifs," that Protestants are tolerant. As the Klan is made up solely of Protestants from all walks of life and from every section of the Union, and number approximately seven million, and has the sympathy of millions of others. Just how can the Klan be called Intolerant?

(By a Staff Correspondent) DAYTON, O., Nov. 16. Notwithstanding the announcement of the Ohio attorney-general's office several weeks ago that voters must give their legal names at the polling place, at least five Roman Catholic nuns voted illegally at the recent election in this city. Twwae them appeared at the voting booth immediately following the departure of the challenger a Protestant and demanded the right of suffrage. When the first was asked her name she replied, "Corrette," and when further questioned she declined to an
swer. "That's the only name I ever had," she said. After a hasty conference. .ie was allowed to vote under her convent
name and the others followed suit. Later in the day three others voted under' similar circumstances. The matter is to be thrashed out with the election board. ' A definite ruling from federal authorities also may be asked, since existing laws do not discriminate between Roman Catholics and Protestants in the right to vote under assumed names. Severe penalties are provided, including a prison sentence. It is known that more than 200
nuns registered from a convent north
west of this city on primary day and the only assurance the election officials had was the assurance of a Roman Catholic priest that the women were legal voters.

DETROIT, Mich., Nov. 17. It was learned here today that a threat to bomb the K'.an home In this city had been received bv Klan officials.
The threat note, which was signed by "The Tiper's Eye," was received almost simultaneously with an article appearing in the Detroit Times, written by John T. Wallace, a reporter for that paper. The article concerneJ the Klan home and told of a visit to the home by Wallace. It is charged that Wallace was forced to resort to subterfuge to sain admittance to the home, as he is not eligible to become a Klansman. The threat note is given added importance due to the fact a smm of money was found to be missing from the home right at- the time of the

The merchant replied that he did not know the exact figures but he believed the percentage named was correct. He reminded his visitors that he was favoring the Roman Catholic church in employing that
number, since he has practically no Roman patronage. "Well." continued the priestly visitor, "we are going to insist that you employ 50 per cent Roman Catholics lri your place." The merchant was amazed at the effrontery, "You're going to insist?" he asked. The priest nodded and his nod was echoed by his companion. "Well, if you are going to put that In the form of a demand, gentlemen."
he said, "there is only one thing for me to do."
The priests nodded expectantly, but

(Special to The Fiery Cross) BLOOMFIELD, III., Nov. 17. Tho truth about bloody Herrin and Williamson county, where violent Romanism has cost the lives oi many Protestant Americans, was revealed in a sermon at the Christian, -eburch in Drakesville by the Rev. Mr. Flick, newly-appointed minister to that place, who was recently transferred from his pulpit in Williamson county. According to the statement of the minister, u; to one year ago. Williamson county was perhaps the worst in the whole United States. He declares that the jawbreakers, aided 1 y the state's attorney and the sheriff, both Romanists, have been holding the reins in their hands. Since tha state has taken a band in affairs conditions have been greatly Improved and lately the law-abiding element has made it so unpleasant that tha sheriff has had to leave town and
other gangsters are bel"g d-ivon cut from their old haunts. He asserted that when conditions were at th very peak of lawlessness, officers of the law winked at the violations and even lent their aid to the gangster citizenship. He also declared that 600 law-abldin? citizens had iiccohiplished their object when they Inaugurated the clean-up cam

In this connection, the minister emphatically asserted that to his knowledge, four priests of the Intnaii Catlml c church openly aided and assisted these crooked officials in "ha performance of these acts. Tho speaker declared that the sheriff of Williamson county and his deputies, all of them ex-convicts, having served time for crimes ranging from burglary to murder, I ad been working with the law-defying
