Iii a prat-election statement. Riven to the press at Helena last Thurs-

dav. I'uited States Senator T. J. Walsh, successful Democratic candidate,

said : ; -It is needless to say that I am hiirhh- gratified at the decisive vote

oi Tnesday on the senatorship, It was a rehuke to that evanescent uprising proclaiming its exclusive and snperior Americanism, while professing sentiments and advocating policies repugnant to the fundamental principles oi American liberty." We confess Ave had believed Mr. Walsh a man of larger caliber. Of course, he was referring to the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, although ho did not mention tho organization by name. While the electton is over and The Montana Klansman hes no desire to start a controversy, it can not

i permit. Mr. Walsh's statement to go unchallenged.

v neiner tlio Klan is evanescent only tinio win ten. It is founded upon

principles as enduring as the universe if those principles fade away, so will the Klan. But if It is an "uprising," against what or against whom is it directed? Surely not against th government of the United

States! Musi we Infer, then. It is sin ''uprising" against the Roman Catholic ! hierarchy nntl the pseudo llomnn Catholic l-liiipiref j Klansmen, we would inform Mr. Walsh, do not "proclaim an exclusive ! and superior Americanism." They do, however linve for their goal n "taperj Intive Americanism" something every true American must approve if this I nation Is to continue as a free, democratic state with free, democratic institntlon.---. Ad Klansmen do "proclaim" that they are endeavoring to live up to this standard of "superlative Americanism'' and would have every other ; true American do likewise. j We wish to take sharpest insue. however, with Mr. Walsh's assertion i that Klansmen and tho Klan "profess sentiments and advocate policies notoriously repugnant to the fundamental principles of American liberty." : Montana's senior senator is an educated and welt-informed man; it Is idle to say lie does not know the principles professed and the policies ad- ! vocateil by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Those principles and those ; policies have been heralded from one end of thin country to the other, and ; Mr. Wuhih must lie fully cognizant of their import. Consequently, when he declares they are "notoriously repugnant," he does so with knowledge of the

I facts, and must accept lull responsibility lor Ills assertion.

Attends Three Meetings ' Dr. Evans and his Klan officials attended three meetings in Denver Tuesday night. After a dinner at the Denver Athletic Club, given by Dr. Locke, Grand Dragon of Colorado, Dr. Evans addressed a large meeting of Denver women in their hall; then he drove to Englevvood, several milos south, and spoke at a meeting of men. The. hall was jammed and packed. ' The big meeting of the night came third at the cotton mill where 5,000 candidates presented themselves for

initiation. At that meeting an imperial band of Denver consisting of 205 pieces provided music. This band has been recently made the Imperial Klan band of the United States. It was formerly Denver Klan band No.

sang, and a large drum corps also assisted in the entertainment. George K. Butcher, chief of staff and Great Titan of Texas, made a short speech bringing the greetings of Texas to Colorado Klansmen. Charles H. McBrayer, Grand Dragon of Kansas, told ths audience how the Klansmen of his state recently burled one William Allen White, independent candidate for governor. Gen. N. B.
