Intolerance: Z)he?JTsl2ll
Since the Ortranization of the Iviiiehts of the Kn Klux Klan, the Word "Intolerance" Has Been Applied to Protestants by Officials of the Koman Hierarchy, Who Formerly Boasted of Their Otvn "Intolerance." The Konian Corporation of Late Has Tried to Shift to Protestantism the Blame for Intolerance in America. In a Series of Six Articles a Special Writer for The Fiery Cross Will Tell Truthfully and dearly the Facts of the Practice of Intolerance in This Country. Editor's Note.

iROM the many newspaper reports from all parts of the country, immediately following
Columbus Day (or Discovery Day as it is legally known in many parts of the country) it
appears that the day was chiefly used by the speakers to attack the Klan and all things
Protestant Where speakers did not call the Klan by name, Roman Catholic-influenced newspapers supplied the name in their headlines and news articles. One of these newspapers is the New York Times, which carried a column story on the Italian-Roman Catholic celebration there, at which Samuel A. Maginnis is said to have attacked the Klan although the name was not mentioned.

FIM. JF.RSRY CHl'BCII MILLVILLK. N. J. The Trinity M. E. Church of this city was host to a large delegation of Klansmen and Xlanawomen. The church was filled to overflowing and a splendid sersnon was heard.
It is, ot course, to be assumed that the speaker did refer to the Klan. although when analyzed, his words, as quoted by The Times, could ha,ve well betn spoken by a Klansnian in all sincerity. At one place Mr. Maginnis said: "There is no room in this country for individuals or organizations which wojld create Internal strife, JThe sooner it is realized this movement is a real danger to the government, -the sooner means will be. found to stop it. "When an organization is formed for the sole puriiosc of taking away from others their rights under the Constitution, it is striking at the fundamentals of our nation by creating discord, for a house divided against itself can not stand. The daiiirer is not to us, hut to our country. The situation is really a dangerous one, in my opinion. We must eliminate any such organization as I have referred to." Accusation by Inference There is no doubt that the speaker referred to the Klan. but his chief object, it can hardly be doubted, was to accuse the Klan of these things merely by inference. The world at large can only view an organization by what it has actually done, and not by unproved allegations and veiled insinuations of persons opposed to that organization. The speaker declared that when an attempt is made by an organization to "take away from others their rights under the Constitution, it is striking at the fundamentals of our nation by creating discord." Now that the American citizen has this direct expression, it might be well to point out the fait (Mice tisain that the Knights of the Ku Klux K:r.r. are formed under the laws of our land and lutve uvery legal right under our Constitution to cotit ntte their organization. The Klan is legally fti; t.k d, under state laws as well as national, in all kiiiies of tho union. When Klansmen parade they lirst secure a permit from the proper authorities. So many incidents have arisen where parades have been broken up by those of the same faith as the Knights of Columbus and, in fact, by the KnJ.Lts of Columbus, one not knowing who Mr. Maginnis is or to whom he was speaking, might easily assume that he was speaking of the Knights of Coiunibus when he scored "a certain organization. " On the other hand, the speaker would no doubt be at a loss to name one instance where a Knights of Columbus parade, a St. Patrick's Day procession or a celebration by the Ancient Order of Hibernians was ever interrupted by Klansmen. Protestant Is 'ot Intolerant Can any person find where Klansmen have gone forth in an effort to destroy the Knights of Columbus; or attempted to get the government to take action against the Sons of Italy? Certainly not. Is there any record of Klansmen (or other
Protestants) swooping down on a meeting of the Knights of Columbus and destroying the speakers' stand and forcing assembled Protestants from the grounds in which they were legally meeting, such thi was- done by the Knights of Columbus, led by an editor of one oT the largest Roman Catholic publications in America, at Roundbrook, New Jersey, on a quiet Sabbath morning? There is no such record of Protestant intolerance, because no Protestant would be guilty of such actions. In South Bend, Indiana, Roman Catholic students, on May 17 of this year, started a riot in which Protestant women were beaten and kicked and Klansmen and Masons (who were not members of the Klan) were beaten unconscious, This riot was started by the Roman Catholics because a legally formed organization of Protestants, acting under their rights granted them by the Constitution (the Constitution of which Mr. Maginnis speaks) held a meeting in that city. During the riot, which lasted all day, the students ripped, tore and trampled American flags. Where In Intolerance? One of the chief cries of the enemies of Klansmen, and therefore organized Protestantism, is Intolerance. These enemies, however, tail to give any definite or concrete evidence ot intolerance. The Klaa is, in fact, a protective measure against the
intolerance of the opposition. The Klan believes in white supremacy that white blood should not be mixed with that of the negro. Is this intolerance? Or is it merely the desire to keep white blood uncontaminated? Can it be possible that the white Roman Catholic does not agree with the Protestant in that? Of course, if a move against the intermarriage of whites and blacks is intolerance, then the Klan is as intolerant as the intelligent negro who decries such intermarriage. Jews are not permitted within the Klan for the reason that none but Gentiles may become members. Is this intolerance? If so, why? Do not the Jews have organizations to which none but Jews may belong? none but Italians may belong to the Sons of Italy; none but Irish to the Ancient Order of Hibernians; none but Roman Catholics to the Knights of Columbus. So why is the Klan intolerant? The very persons belonging to the Klan are descendants of those who blazed the trails along which our country was built, and who so built it that it was the first country in which the Jew found asylum. The Jews have the same rights under the Constitution of the United States, which every Klansman is sworn to uphold, that the Klansmen themselves have. The Klan is formed to aid in the perpetuation of these ideals on which our country was built and has thrived. To be exact, the Klansman is aiding to keep intact the laws and Constitution which gives the Jew greater privilege than he has ever known elsewhere. Same Applies to Roman Catholics
Virtually, the same thing applies to the Roman Catholic. Before America became a country (in which all men were given freedom of thought) the Roman Catholic had no place to live except in monarchies where he was nominally a slave. In a country where Protestantism gave freedom, the Roman Catholic has prospered; he has been released from the slavery and poverty and ignorance which were a part of the monarchies in which he lived. Protestant-progress has done much for him. These same laws which give him all the rights of Protestants are those very laws which the Klan are attempting to perpetuate. The Constitution, which grants the Roman Catholic equality in America, contains those laws, ideals and American spirit which the Klansmen of America are fighting to keep alive and untarnished. - These facts, however, are purposely overlooked by the Roman higher-ups who are directing the fire against the Klan, and in their place are substituted lies, slander, unfounded and unproved allegations and vile misrepresentation. To return to the words of Mr. Maginnis, speaking for Roman Catholics, we note that he said, "a house divided against itself can not stand." His words are true. Klansmen realize this, and for that reason are attempting to instill Americanism in the veins of those within our country. With the Sons of Italy perpetuating the Italian tongue and ideals in our country; the Ancient Order of Hibernians giving more attention to Ireland than to America ; Polish societies calling upon Poles to rear their children so as to make good Polish citizens and a myriad of other un-American acts too numerous for mention, the American house is gradually being divided against itself. He also said, "the danger is not to us, but to our country." Many interpretations could be put upon his words, but we do not believe that it would be unfair to interpret them to mean that there is no danger to Roman Catholicism, but the country is in danger. Again he is voicing the thought of a Klansman. There is no danger that the Roman Catholic in America will ever be denied his right to worship his God as he so desires but our country is in danger in fact, it is in grave danger. Not from Klansmen, however, but from those who deny the right of Protestant Americans to have an organization which is granted by the fundamental laws of our country. Yes, intolerance is stalking in America, but in the following articles it will be shown definitely, clearly and accurately that the intolerance is not being practiced by Klansmen, but by those who are opposing protestantism in our country. . (To Be Continued)
(By a Staff Correspondent) JERSEY CITY, N. J., Nov. 3. A vicious attack on the ministers of Protestant churches was made here last week by Judge Robert V. Kinkead in a slanderous address to St. Patrick's parish, National Council of Roman Catholic Women. In the course of his Koman talk,
he said Jhat "everybody needs moral leadership and that there is only one
moral leader today and that is the Konian Catholic church." Assails Preachers Thus exciulding every Trotestarrt force for good, he attacked preachers cf the 1'rotestant faith: "Some of the Protestant churches today are crowded because the people think the pastor will make some startling statement about the virgin birth. There are some ministers who are wrapped in the American flag and they say they are Americans.
All the time they ' are espousing- a certain, Klan that is planning to destroy the peace which has prevailed since 1 7 70." Judge Kinkead failed to say that that peace was the result of an order from George Washington in 1770 : 'Pnt Americans only on srunrd." During' the course of his typically
Human address, Judge Kinkead sa!d all Roman Catholic children should he educated in the parochial school in order for them to receive the proper religious training. He said that he is a strong advocate of this education for Roman Catholic children. Fails to Name Plays
He likewise condemned a number of stage productions in New York as "a lure for boys and girls and
corrupting to morals. These productions, however, did not include "Rain." "The Fool," "Simon Called Peter" and a number of other JewJesuit' dramas in which Protestant ministers are shown in a distinctly unfavorable light.

Bureau Manager, Backed by
Hines, Removes Protestants at Perryville, Md.
(By a Staff Correspondent) COLUMBUS, O., Nov. 1. As the election draws near, Roman Catholic enemies -of the Ku Klux Klan are growing desperate in their attempts to discredit the American organization. Within the last month a score of instances have been reported oi VK. r. K,V -threats -sent to Ohio negroes in an attempt to place the Protestant organization in an unfavorable light. Over at Xenia, it. is reported, a ne
gro larmer s haystack was burned after he hid been warned by "four white-clad men," and evidence of an attempt to burn his barn, also was found by the sheriff. The sheriff is convinced, he said, that the Klan had nothing" whatever to do with the threats or fire and many citizens believe the plot was hatched by the anti-Klan political ring as an attempt to swing the large negro populatioifrnto line for tho Democratic ticket. FIXD IIOMAX PLOT
DAYTON, O., Nov. 1. A copy of an official document of the Knights of Columbus, which has come into the possession of a prominent Klansman here, contains some amazing disclosures. It urges the Roman Catholic order to take nn active part in patriotic demonstrations all over the country "and wherever possible to take the initiative" in such affairs. It also stresses the importance of placing a copy of the Catholic encyclopedia in every public library.
ROBED MEN MAKE GIFT TO GEORGIA PREACHER
PERRYVILLE, Md., Nov. 3. Those
who have kept in touch with the situation will recall that there was quite
a lot of trouble experienced by the heads of the United States Veterans' Bureau during the past year, follow
ing the appointment of M. B. MacMillan as community manager for the two hospitals and vocational training center here. Director Hlnes ordered MacMillan to clean up the reservation and reorganize its administration with a view to more economical and efficient management. The hew community manager switched personnel and dismissed several employes he deemed unnecessary.
He recently asked Payton Patterson,
manager of the utilities division, to cut his staff. ' Patterson, It Is said, refused and MacMillan declared his position vacant on September 16. After an appeal direct to President Coolidge and General Hines, MacMillan was called in for a conference and It was learned recently the director Is backing MacMillan and if he orders Patterson to leave, the order will stand. The whole trouble lies in the fact that MacMillan is a Roman Catholic, and is making use of his authority to oust all Protestants and replace
them with the hirelings of the pope.
