THE FIERY CROSS PAGE THREE Plots of Papal Machine Unmasked Rome Demands Delivery of Votes
Hierarchy's Political Maze Ennieshes Congress in Toils " (Continued from Page 1) the league an ambition not only to recover his temporal power, but to restore to Germany and Roman Catholic Austria what it lost in the world war. This would be following in the footsteps of Pope Benedict, who caused the war, and then tried to betray the allies into Kurrender to the kaiser when the Vatican realized that it had backed the losing powers.
Realizing that the political plans of the papacy to control the United States had become too well known, through the publicity given the devilish scheme by The Fellowship Forum from time to time, which has been reprinted by scores of other patriotic newspaper;-., the pope of Rome decided that the time had arrived for the hierarchy to strike at the Democratic national convention, if it could ever hope to gain his objective. Orders were given in the priesthood to nominate Al Smith "at any cost." Three hundred priests in the robes of their alien boss, and hundreds of rowdies from the East Side of New York packed the gallery and hooted and howled every Prctestant candidate down in an attempt to stampede the convention for the church's favorite. Seeing that this line cf attack availed them nothing, the hoodlums rushed the doers and invaded the convention floor and staged a demonstration for Rum, Romanism and Al Smith. All Americans know the result of this. Al Smith lost and the hierarchy concentrated on the "next best man." Oscar Underwood was selected as the ram to break down the Protestant stone wall, but could not penetrate the solid South delegations. Then in desperation, the Roman Catholic bosses Al Smith and Brennan of Chicago with a few lesser lights in hyphenism got their heads together and issued an ultimatum to the rest of the delegates that they had to nominate a man agreeable to them or they could stay there until doomsday because the Roman Catholic bloc had more than one-third of the votes and could veto the nomination of any candidate that did not have their approval. Brennan at first opposed John W. Davis, but when the leaders of the hyphenates agreed upon his selection, he was the first man to jump upon the Davis bandwagon and change the votes of the Illinois delegation. That is how the Roman Catholic church forced the nomination of John W. Davis, but the Prctestant faction managed to get Charles Bryan on the ticket as his running mate. This naturally causes the American public to speculate upon the price that will have to be paid to appease the Roman Catholic bloc if Davis is elected. The pope of Rome is one of the most earnest advocates of the League of Nations. The pope of Rome demanded that the Democratic party denounce a Protestant fraternal organization. The platform of the party, upon which Davis was nominated and is in honor bound to stand by, refused to denounce the Klan and refused to enter the League of Nations, until jifter submitting it to a vote of the people. Davis conferred with Joe Tumulty, Spellacy, Smith and ether bosses of the RomanXatholic party. He was informed that the ticket could not carry the hyphenated sections of the cast, unless the pope's demand that the Klan be denounced
and the league endorsed was adhered to. What followed the world is fully aware. Davis deserted the platform of the Democratic party and denounced the Klan as well as pledged the United States to an immediate entrance into the league if he is elected. It is said that Smith informed the party's standard bearer that he would not run for re-election for the governorship of New York if Davis failed to accede to the demands of the papists for a denunciation of Protestantism and entrance into the pope-controlled League of Nations. Smith is said to have promised Davis that if he denounced the Klan, he would seek another term and warned him that the national ticket would lose the forty-five electoral votes of New York state if he refused to seek another term. Now that Smith has entered the race for another term and improved the chances of the Davis-Bryan ticket of carrying New York state, reports are current that if Davis is elected, Smith has been promised a cabinet position. Smith would only consent to three positions on the cabinet. His eyes are trained on the secretaryship of state, war or navy. He would not see any other berth on the cabinet. As secretary of state, Smith would form the missing link between the Vatican and the United States government. With a papal ambassador herev-Washington would rivaHlie capitals of Europe for secret papal intrigues of a political nature. As secretary of war, he could seriously handicap the country in the event the unsettled situation in Europe would suddenly become inflamed in another world war. If we would go to war with a Roman Catholic country or any country which had the moral and political support of the Vatican (as Germany and her allies did during the world war), what would prevent him from throwing a monkey wrench into the entire machinery and crippling the army, if he so desired? As secretary of navy, he ,would be in a better position to further the cause of Romanism, if he so desired, than he would be if he were secretary of war. Americans, weigh well this situation before going to the ballot box and casting your vote for any candidate. Support only Americans, who do not answer the crack of the papal whip or tremble at the invectives of the Vatican. The showdown at the Democratic convention was predicted by The Fellowship Forum long before it happened. Months ago we published a letter, which was supposed to be the copy of a letter of instructions sent by the hierarchy to the Knights of Columbus, in which the death of President Harding was predicted and instructions were given "the faithful" on how to elect Al Smith. This letter was published in full in The Fellowship Forum on February 17, 1923. Extracts from this historic letter follow : "To all counsellors of the fourth degree, Knights of Columbus, and to those engaged in special work for the church. Under special seal of absolute secrecy. Guard as your own life: "This summer. (1922) a special mission from the holy see visited America and brought the message that the Holy Father challenges Catholic America to fulfill its destiny and elect a true son of the church as President of the United States in 1924, and thereafter there will be no Protestant Presidents of the U. S. A. As the president controls the army and navy and the administrative bureaus of the government, this thing can be arranged. "The time has come for the Holy Father to take his place (Continued on Page 7)
To All Protestants The thought near the heart of all enemies of the public school, enemies, of good government, enemies of the effort to place clean, fearless, honest men in office, enemies of Protestantism, is to disrupt the Protestant organization, the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. This thought is growing and growing, and a desperate, nation-wide effort to accomplish the death of the Klan is to be put forward immediately after the election. The Roman corporation is fighting with its back to the wall. Through misrepresentation, vilification, insidious propaganda, aided by the subsidized press of the nation, this fight is being waged as never before. Immediately following the election, the match will be applied to the powder gathered and placed where the enemies of true Americanism believe it will do the! most harm to the Klan. Newspaper stories, literally thousands of them, prepared in advance, will be turned loose. These articles will contain every conceivable charge against thei Klan. How many Protestants will permit themselves to be misled ? How many Klansmeh who have been letting the other fellow do the work are going to awaken to the need of their placing a shoulder to the wheel and aiding in these times when every true American's aid is needed in the greatest cause of the century? How many Klansmen who have neglected attending meetings, thinking the "work will go on just the same," will arouse themselves, pay their dues, attend meetings regularly, be posted on what is being done, arid again become regular, active Klansmen? Klansmen, it is up to you! The time has arrived when half-hearted work will count for nothing. You MUST be baptized in the true spirit of the purposes of the Klan movement. You can no longer drift, expecting the other fellow to pull the load. Get the vision. Satisfy yourselves of the great work of this movement. Attend meetings regularly. Every week interesting affairs are discussed in every Klan hall in Indiana. You should be in on these affairs. They broaden and aid you. In these days of misrepresentation in the public press, it surely is the duty of every Klansman in Indiana to get the truth through h'is own publication. There is only one official publication in Indiana THE FIERY CROSS. It is your publication. It is growing, becoming more interesting with each issue. Its columns are filled with real, constructive Americanism. There is no hate in it. -Every article is prepared carefully to bring out pure, clean thoughts to impress the American of the need to be a real American. No Klansman is doing his full duty unless he is a subscriber and a regular reader of this publication. I Now is the time to rededicate yourself to the cause. A subscription blank is attached hereto. Fill it out at once and mail immediately to this office. That is part of your duty. When the paper arrives, another duty is before you to read carefully and digest its contents. Still a third duty follows to pass the paper to a neighbor, some other Protestant citizen. Get him interested. He will see the light when the truth is properly presented to him. He soon will be
in the ranks of the great movement. He, too, soon will be a subscriber to The Fiery Cross. Think what this little effort, little expenditure on your part will do for Protestant Indiana. Awaken! Be on guard! The time is now! Clip, fill out and send the accompanying blank today.

A Protestant Aroused
The following communicationrvritten by M. A. Lausin, Anderson, Ind., a Protestant American citizen, but not a member of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, is a forcible indication of the fact that Protestant America is being aroused and is awakening to the menace facing the United States politically. Every Protestant voter in Indiana should read this communication before November 4. It truly sets forth the situation confronting the negro voter. The communication is reproduced here in Mr. Lausin's own language:
Oct.

Anderson, Ind
Editor Fiery Cross. Pear Sir: I would like to say a few. tilings through the columns of jour paper if you will be kind enough to publish it for me. I have been wanting to say something of this kind for some time, but haven't
Wiail Die time. ,
In the first place I want to sy that there never was a time in the history of this country when peopl have taken so much interest in polltics as in this campaign. The stand taken by true Americans at this time in putting forth every effort to "put none but Americans on jruard"
has. of course, brought forth an equal effort on the part of America s enemies to put enemies of Americanism into every office of importance In this fair land of ours. Knowing as I do that the Ku Klux Klan Is composed of some of the best citizens of both the old parties as well as a number from eac'i nf lesser important ones, I do not wish
to say anything; that will oiienii any member of either party. I"t th- '" remains that the Democratic party in its national convention in New ior City last July lacked but one vote of denouncing the Ku Klux Klan by name. A bomb thrown at 80,000,000 red-blooded Americans. All this was brought about by the Roman Catholic and foreign Influences wellded in that
onvenlion for Al-K-Hall Smith, the pope's favorite son in America. This fact only proves that the Roman Catholics only lacked one vote of having; the stranglehold on the Democratic party in this country at that time. They couldn't put papa's son across thanks to the bull-dog grit of W. (i. McAdoo in hanging on until he smashed the ambitions of the cussed pope. Then they fell back on to John W. Davis and Charles Vv Bryan as a compromise as it soon truly proved tw be for John W. Davis didn't waste much time in denounc
ing the Klan also. We don t know what forces impelled him to do this but we do know that Plus l'aa has said that he has thejlght to "dictate" when politics comes near the throne." Of course It is clear tha in doing so Davis was playing for lffe Roman Catholic and foreign vote; but Mr. Da Kollette saw this before John W. did and denounced the Klan first.
thus pulling this vote to himself a truly ''little" thing to do, but he and Davis, too knew that that was all that was necessary to draw the wlg-wagg-y element across. And the
trick worked. Da Follette has got 'em, and It is not only possible but probable that he will run second on the fourth day of November. Hut, dear, Protestant Democrat.
don't think that I am fighting the
Democratic party as a party; I'm just fighting the Roman part of it, and, thank God, this party is not completely Roman, but has millions of good Americans in it -who are now actually ashamed of the fact that they were ever political partners with this Roman bunch. So much for that part of the question, but there is another thing that is astonishing, in my mind, and that is the fact that some of the great leaders in this party are still trying to win back to their ranks this same bunch of bolshevists and traitors that have so boldly wrecked this great party, by making the Ku Klux Klarv an issue in this campaign. These leaders, I say, are patting Da. Follette and his followers on the back for the purpose of winning their support in case the election of a president is thrown into Congress so as to elect John W. Davis Wall Street's partner presiden t ; a factor the Democrats have fought in the Republican parly ever since Heck was a pup. Before going farther I want to say
a word m regard to La Follette. He's
the man that was elected by the Republicans of Wisconsin and Is being paid $7,500 a year to serve as a Republican senator in Washington,
wnen, as -Jt matter of fact, he has turned traitor to the Republican
party and is running for president on
an entirely different platform, although still drawing his Republican salary. Why don't he resign Ills office like a man and quit flaunting the laws of his country which forbid a man holding, or aspiring to, two offices of public trust at one and the tan time? His record during the world war is enough to conyince any good American that it will not do to elect such a man President of the United States. Part of the "bunk" he is putting out is that he is the friend of the laboring man. How, in the name of God, can this be true when he voted against our foreign immigration bill which was passed toy.-the last Congress thanks to the wholesome influence. -of Uie Jvu Kiux Klan? Had this -MlXl been defeated, as La Follette wished, our stores would have been literally flooded with cheap, low-down, immoral, trashy, poperuled foreigners, who would have taken the jobs from our well-paid American laboring men. Now, dear laboring man, if you think that La Follette is your friend, vote for him on November 4. So much for friend Bobbie. But before closing I want to go back to the action of the old-line Democratic leaders in regard to the colored man. And I wish every colored voter in America could read this part of my communication and decide
for themselves where their vote should go on November 4-. But allow me to digress for just one moment to trace the history of the negro In this country during the last 100 years. In the year 1619 the negro was brought to the country a slave; bought, sold, scourged and mistreated exactly in some instances as were the dumb animals. This continued until long before the election of Abraham Lincoln in I860. The people were greatly divided in their opinions concerning the moral right to hold the negro in bondage, and when Lincoln was only a boy he expressed his determination to strike slavery a knockout blow if the opportunity ever presented itself. With the strife and struggle that
was on 'When he became President of the United States in 1860, the opportunity had come. He, a Republican, managed the civil war, a war lasting four years, to a successful end, saved the Union, and set the negro free. This fact of itself should merit the allegiance of the colored man to the Republican party. But the benefits that went out to the negro through this Republican administration did not stop here. The next thing It did was to amend the constitution so as to make him a citizen, and last, but not least, a constitutional amendment made the negro a voter. Now, my colored friend of the
southern states, I want to ask you how long it has been since you were allowed to vote. The northern states are solidly Republican. The negro votes here at every election. The southern states are solidly Democratic. Tou were allowed to vote there for a few years "after the con
stitution gave you that legal right, then the southern Democrats and I imagine they were headed by Roman Catholics, Judging from the hatred they have always had for you originated the Ku Klux Klan and you have never voted since. That Ku Klux Klan, a Catholic organisation, came Into power to put you out of business and it accomplished its purpose successfully. Now that same Catholic-controlled Democratic party Is today trying to tell you that the Ku Klux Klan of today a purely Protestant organisation is fighting you. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Klan of today Is the best friend the colored man has and was organized for the sole purpose of fighting the Roman Catholic hierarchy, or political machine in this country. Dear colored friend, don't allow the Roman Catholics to pull the wool over your eyes in the great campaign by voting a ticket indorsed by a party that has robbed you of the only real God-given privilege you ever had, viz: that privilege of voting for the men that go to Congress,
"We Are Catholics First and
- Citizens Next, 9 9 Papists Say (Continued from Page 1) ideals of the men who founded this nation. It has always stood for staunch, unswerving Americanism and it recognizes no foreign autocrat above the government of the United States. It has sponsored strict enforcement of all laws. These noble purposes have won for Klansmen the utter dislike of all violators of the law, of men with foreign ideals and of Roman Catholics, whose allegiance is first to Rome. Why are the aliens, foreign sympathizers and Roman Catholics fighting the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan ? These people, because of their very nature, are antagonistic to American ideals. The Roman Catholic church is of foreign origin, foreign dictation and foreign control. The men in high command within its ranks are of foreign descent and its priests derive their powers from a foreign throne. The fight, then, narrows down to a Roman war on Protestantism, the Ku Klux Klan being made the target because it has excluded Roman Catholics from membership. Every priest in the state of Indiana, deriving his power from a Roman pontiff, has received a letter from the St. Joseph State League, 1431 Union street, directing him to extract an anti-Klan pledge from candidates in his district or to instruct his parishioners against men who refuse to condeEa the Protestant American organization. These men played into the hands of Romanists by denouncing organized Protestantism: John W. Davis, Democratic candidate for president. Robert M. La Follette, independent candidate for president. Dr. C. B. McCulIoch, Democratic candidate for governor. Arthur J. Hamrick, Democratic candidate for secretary of state. John H. Aiken, Democratic candidate for judge of supreme court, Fourth district. 4 V. E. Livengood, Democratic candidate for judge of appellate court, Second district. A. W. Greenwood, Democratic candidate for Congress, Second district. James W. Hill, Republican candidate for Congress, Fourth district. Laurence A. Hanley, Democratic candidate for Congress, Sixth district. Joseph Turk, Democratic candidate for Congress, Seventh district. John A. M. Adair, Democratic candidate for Congress, Eighth district. Harry O. Rhodes, Democratic candidate for Congress, Tenth district. Samuel E. Cook, Democratic candidate for Con- " gress, Eleventh. district.
Charles W. Branstrator, Democratic candidate for Congress, Twelfth district. James L. Harmon, Democratic candidate for Congress, Thirteenth district. The Roman political machine has not stopped with obtaining denunciations from many leading candidates. It has, through parish priests, sent out orders that men who do not hate Protestantism are to be defeated. Roman Catholic families have been called on to contribute $16 to the campaign fund for Dr. Carlton B. McCulIoch. They all paid, because their priests directed them to do so. Convent nuns who have avoided the outside world are being marshaled. Their votes will be added to those of other Roman Catholics in an effort to defeat the cause of Protestantism. Romanists have sought to" turn the negro voter from the Republican party to the Democratic party. They have imported alleged negro "victims" of the Klan to exhibit their "maimed" features to the colored voters for the purpose of influencing them to vote against the Republican candidate for governor. In literature distributed from Dr. McCulloch's headquarters they have endeavored to betray the negro into the hands of the Roman Catholics. In a pamphlet, "Facts for Negro Voters," they openly ask the negro voter to espouse Roman Catholicism and to forsake the Methodist and Baptist churches, which have been responsible for the greatest advance in the colored race. At every turn, the Romanists are organizing alien elements against Protestant candidates. They hope thus to "make America Catholic" and to turn the government of the United States and of Indiana over to Rome-controlled candidates. Rome has made Protestantism an issue in the Indiana election. It is the Protestant's battle. . Will Indiana be an American state or a Roman province?
both state and national, to make the laws which you must obey, whether you have any part in their election or not. Four years ago, my colored friend, a Roman Catholic woman Democrat said to me after the news of Republican victory had been announce.!:
"You won't hold your job long." 1 1 was at work then for "1:11016 Sam." 1 said": "What makes you think so?" She replied that since the Republicans have been elected they will fire you and give your job to a dirty "nigger." I said: "Is that so?" She said: "Sure; the Republicans are the only friends the dirty 'niggers' have and they will do anything to hold their votes. We Catholics have absolutely no use
for them." Now, my colored friend, note the inducements they are throwing out to you to snare you into the Democratic party. Be-" careful. In conclusion, let me say: I never voted a straight ticket in my life. I have always voted for the "man" regardless of his political affiliations. I put patriotism far ahead of politics. While I do not belong to the Ku Klux Klan. I was born a Klansman. and in reality that is the only kind of a Klansman that there should be any room for in this good old U. S. A. A made-over Klansman is not now and never will be a good Klansman. Though the robe and mask of the
Klansman is despised by a few, it has not the taint of black which colors the- robe that covers the still blacker designs of the saintly (?) pope-ruled dupes of this the best country that the sun ever shone upon. A FIERY CROSS READER.
