In Support of Ed Jackson (By Clyde AValb, Republican' State Chairman) Ed Jackson, ourcandidate for governor, received more votes at the primary election than all other candidates on the Republican and Democratic tickets combined, and if a primary decision is worth anything he i3 entitled to full Republican support. Mr. Jackson is trained in the state's business, a sound lawyer, a gallant soldier and a Christian gentleman, and no man will suffer at his hands on account of race, religion or condition. As I am talking frankly, I may properly remind Republicans who are anxious for a successful Coolidge administration that in the event of a vacancy, by reason of death or resignation, in our representation in the United States Senate a thing which has happened in other states, twice in the last three months such vacancy would be filled by the governor of this stated Naturally, a Democratic governor would appoint a Democratic senator and a Republican governor might be relied on to select a senator of his own political faith. The Republican majority in the Senate is slender and those who are hoping for a successful Coolidge administration surely will not care to place it in further jeopardy by supporting a Democratic candidate for governor who might possibly find it within his power to defeat the legislative program of the president.

It Is admitted that Columbus studied the voyages made by Erickson before he attempted to cross the Atlantic. It is said the Latin adventurer learned much by what Erickson had already done centuries before him. In this connection, the Washington Post, speaking editorially, said that "It is possible that had it not been for what he learned In Iceland about Deif's voyages, Columbus would not have cross the Atlantic." Colmubna Gets Credit The fact remains, however, that Columbus is given credit, at least in oux-public schools, of having discovered America this in tin; face of the fact that Krickson not only discovered A morion live centuries before Columbus, who never wet ROMANS USE SCHOOL HOUSE FOR SERVICE Held Mass Regularly in Institution They Def y Protestants Aroused (Hy a Staff Correspondent) HAZARD, Ky., Oct. 20. I foot on the American continent proper, but the .rdlc discoverer colonized America. Just why there should seemingly he a. veil of mystery thrown about the discovery of America is beyond the average mind to fathom. . hy tho honor should be taken from a Nordic and an attempt to bestow it upon a Latin is not quite clear Of course, it is common knowledge that such things have been practiced many times in the world's history, but just "why should tho public schools of America impress upon the school children that Columbus discovered America when this is not a fact It lias been established that the town of Norumbega. where Erickson placed a colony and made his home while in America, stood where Boston now stands. The best authorities will not deny that EriekBon diacovcred America. Iu fact, it i.i pointed out that the name of (hi, ,.1Illtr, was taken from the Nordic discoverer. In some histories it i, shown that the orieinal name was Krika and that the Mound of "m" was placed there by certain Indian tribes whose gutteral touex placed "m" before certain words. Thus It was, aeeord,nK o some authorities, that the word "America" was formed. If Is also claimed that the word was found here by espnrius, when he reached America in 1409. The skeptic, possibly. might sneer, but it should be remembered that those sources responsible for the canard foisted upon the world, in which Christopher Columbus is made the discoverer of this continent, could just as easily have gone gone further and made the word America" a derivation of the first name of Vespucius, which, as we all know, was Amerigo. The name "America," in connection with the new world, first appeared in print in the year 1507, or five years before his death. On maps It did not appear until some years after his death. Honor Where It's I)ue Regardless of the name, however, the vital fact remains that Leif Erickson did discover America anu that Christopher Columb-us never set foot upon this continent. It is gratifying- to note that honor due Lelf Erickson is becoming more -generally acknowledged. "There can no longer be any doubt," says the "Washington Post, "that Loif Erickson did discover' partially explore and temporarily colonize America several centuries before the time of Columbus. In that, the Nordics are right and the Latins would he wrong if they attempted to maintain that Columbus was the first European to reach these shores.,"' '" "' ' Monuments have' been "built in -honor of Columbus; cities' have been named for him; throughout America hundreds of streets and avenues bear his name and in some states October 12 the fabalistic day purporting to haye been the day on which America was discoveredhas been made a legal holiday. This latter bit of modern mythology was the direct result of the labor f the Ivniarhta of Columbn, who .worked nneeaInK!y to Bain this end.. All of this in the, face of the fact that Columbus never set foot on American soil in fact, tho West Indies, where the Columbus voyagers did land, 'remained in the hands of Spain until' 1S1IS, a little more than four centuries after the Latin .reached the western hemisphere. At this time a-prize of $5 is ber Ing offered by a council of the Knights of Columbus for the' best essay written by a school child on the life of Christopher Columbus. In this arid various other ways. the Knights of Columbus are keeping alive the myth first told by the Latins. It is true that Columbus sailed to the western iie'mijt'rfliere under trying circumstances and ho credit for his courage in trials and tribulations sliould be taken from him. However, the fact that he was an intrepid navigator should not alter and it can not alter the fact that Leif.. Erickson discovered America and that he (Columbus) was inspired by the knowledge of what Krickson had done, and was aided by his study of Erickson's achievements. The Nordic navigator and discoverer made a number-of trips to America and history shows that his father was governor of Creenland. The Icelandic sagas, which Inspired Columbus and and heartened him to his undertaking, mark the bourse of fhe Viking ship. which again and again ventured forth from the eastern hemisphere and on to the land at America. . a What He Found In the fervid attempt to make the Italian navigator the discoverer of America and to detract from, the glory of Lcif Krickson, an argument is used by those who have not the courage to deny Leif's discoveries, which brings out a fact that again redounds to the credit of the Nordic race." to retard the proper teachings In regard to the achievements of Leif Erickson. it is contended that a 'proper civilization" was not in evidence after Lelf Erickson had colonized America and that these colonies vanished. It could be consistently asked just what civilization presented itself In America more than a century after Columbus found his way to the West Indies? It is true that another man, "Vespucius, had been to America and had written a detailed report of what he had found here. There is no one who will deny that Columbus failed to set -out any kind of a civilization upon this continent. It is true that ho. was followed at intervals by Spanish adventurers who spent their time in seeking fabled gold and carried out certain superstitions by hunting "fountain of youth" and other nonexistent things. True civilization ami colonization began more than a century after Columbus sailed near America and this civilization, and colonization, from which mighty America arose, wan done hy AngloSaxonn John Smith In Virginia, the Pil;rriais in MasKarhuxettK. These were the persons who colonized and bi-gan the building of America. The charge that Leif Erickson did not place permanent colonies in .America becomes a bursted bubble when it is pointed out that no more permanent civilization followed the trip of Columbus to the West Indies than followed Krb-kson's discovery of America. Truth for Children The fact remains that regardless of how many years elapsed before America was permanently colonized, after its discovery by a Nordic, tills country was finally settled and Ivuilt by Nordics. It is true that Latin navigators followed on the heels of Leif Erickson, and Columbus, inspired with the knowledge of Leif's achievements, made bold to sail westward and got as far as the West Indies. He should be given credit for his bravery and determination, but tho school children of America should be taught the truth about the discovery of America. That this truth i3 beginning to burst through the clouds arising from the Latins- endeavors to promote their cause by erroneous history in regard to America's discovery is seen in many places. Admission by prominent publications that Leif Erickson did discover America is throwing a great light into formerly obscure corners. It Is to he hoped that In the not distant future the xchoot children will he taught the truth ahont the 1Im-eoierj-of America without being befuddled with the trip of Colnmli"s to the Wrxt Indies (n 1492, more' than four rentnriex after America's discovery by a Nordic navigator and a century before its permanent colonization hy Nonlles.
