The Democratic state convention has adopted a platform condemning the Ku Klux Klan and favoring revision of the prohibition laws to permit manufacture and sale of light wines and beer, ' it vr State leaders, . fiead&Tby Homer S.Cummings, former national commit-' teeman, were" eaid to be united in favor of the nomination of Charles G. Morris, a New Haven lawyer, for governor, while .the Stamford delegation and an insurgent faction, including some delegates who were said to be dissatisfied with Mr. Cummings' attitude in the national convention, were said to favor the nomination of Mayor Alfred N. Phillips of 'Stamford. The platform condemns the Ku Klux Klan by name "as the most un-American thing in America," and favors "modification of the Volstead law and the state enforcement act within the terms of the eighteenth amendment, so as to permit the manufacture and sale of light wines and beer." JOURNALIST FAILS
TO GET THE FACTS Klaij Actually Endorsed No Candidates in South Carolina Primaries (Special to The Fiery Cross) COLUMBIA, S. C, Sept. 29. The New York World recently published the following: "To the Editor of the World: In the Democratic primaries, held in South Carolina August 26, certain candidates were commonly said to have the support of the so-called Ku Klux Klan. They were overwhelmingly defeated. It seems to have been emphasized nowhere that this proscriptive society has from the start failed to obtain a general or large membership. It has caused little excitement in this state. (Signed) W. W. Ball. Columbia, S. C." Mr. Ball was formerly editor of the Columbia State Journal and is now dean of the school of journalism of the University of South Carolina. It is surprising that a man of his experience should get his facts so badly mixed up. It was not common talk that certain candidates for state office had the endorsement of the Klan. On the contrary, it was the common talk that the Klan had not endorsed any of the candidates. There was no occasion to do so. No candidate for a state office in South Carolina had antagonized the Klan. Most of them had endorsed its principles openly. Klansmen voted as they pleased, without suggestion or interference or censure from the Klan or anybody con nected with it. GEORGIA KLAN GROWS ATLANTA, Ga., Sept. 29. The read ing of reports of the Grand Dragon's ofnee showing an increase in mem bership in Georgia of more than 300 per cent in the last year and a lecture on the propagation of chartered Klans by Morgan Belser marked the closing day of the first official - Klorero of the Realm of Georgia. A, call of the roll of prov inces showed that every one of them was represented by a full delega tion except one. TO TOUR STATE COLUMBIA, S. C, Sept. 29. The Grand Dragon is planning a tour of yie state, beginning the first of October. It will probably be impossible for him to visit all the Klans in the state, he says, but he will visit most of them and will get in personal touch with most of the membership by visits to individual Klans and by holding group meet mgs jymcn au tne Kiansmen in a given territory may attend. His schedule is now being made up and the Klans will be notified by bulletin. ' STATEMENT OP THE OWNERSHIP, , MANAGEMENT, CIRCULATION. ETC.. REQUIRED BY THE ACT OF? MAYOR DENIES KLAN
FREEDOM OF SPEECH Cancels Contract for Coliseum at Behest of CatholicsSituation Tense SIOUX FALLS, S. D.. Sect. 29. Mayor McKinnon of this city, in his breach of agreement with H. D. Brown, local field man for the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, for the use of the city auditorium has created a very tense situation. After it became known that the Minnehaha county Klan had leased the coliseum Roman Catholics began agitation which closed the doors of the coliseum to organized Protestantism in Sioux Falls. Brown, Klan organizer for Minne haha county, went to Mayor McKinnon and secured from him the use of the coliseum, a municipal auditorium, paying a rental. At the time the mayor and the representative of the Minnehaha county Klan came to a definite agreement. The mayor knew exactly the nature of the meeting which was to be held for Mr. Brown made a special ef fort to stress that the Ku Klux Klan of Minnehaha county had secured the services of a national Kian lecturer and wanted the public to hear mm. Delegation Sees Mayor A body of citizens called at the mayor's office and demanded that the mayor repudiate his agreement witn the representative of the Ku Klux Klan. One Bailey. sum)osed to be a local attorney and a candidate for the state senate on the Re publican ticket, acted as spokesman for the Klan haters. Words .passed to and fro with special emphasis placed to show why several thousand Protestant people of Sioux Falls should be denied tbe use of the coliseum. The Mayor Heeded Their Demands People gathered near and in front of the coliseum thinking that a Klan lecture would be given within the municipal building in spite of the newspaper reports of the mayor's action. The crowd of people was orderly but frequent utterances revealed that an anti-McKinnon spirit was rampant. Just a few minutes before eight o'clock a man mounted a truck and announced that the Klan believes in doing things in an American way arid therefore, had arranged to hold the Kln,meeting to a field instead of attempting a lecture in the street.
