(Speolul to The Firry Cross) CAMDEN, N. J., Sept. 29. The unAnierlcan elements in this city again attempted to discredit the Ku Klux Klan when some twenty youths, attired In sheets with the letters "K. K. K." fixed on them, fired shots into the homes of a number of negroes.

The colored people were greatly frightened. A special railroad policeman returned the fire of the morons, who quickly dispersed. It, is understood that the boys are products of the parochial schools. NEW YORK, Sept. 29. Herman Bernstein, editor of the Jewish Tribune, at a recent luncheon at the Klwanis Club, made a bitter attack on the Klan. He said in part: "Let us not shut our eyes to the danger that Is lurking in these un-American tendencies that are forced into American life by deluded, short-sighted or unscrupulouss people who preach and practice violence instead of love and harmony. Speaks of Christ "The Ku Klux Klan ha3 endeavored to introduce into American life a system that is menacing the noblest American Institutions. As so-called Americans they have tried to degrade the image of the Prince of Peace. They have wrapped themselves in white garments and have hidden their faces behind masks and have gone out into the nights on errands of cruelty and violence. Is

that the spirit of the Prince of

Peace? If someone would burn the American flag what would Americans do? When the Klansmen burn the cross, the symbol of Christianity, what do the Christians do? "The Ku Klux Klan, masquerading as the Christian defender of America, smothers the soul of liberty. It strikes at the root of America, breeds unrest, strife, confusion and is the

mother of anarchy. It is bolshevism

(Special to The Fiery Cross) BUFFALO, N. Y., Sept. 29. A letter of condemnation of the fight waged by Mayor Schwab against Protestants in Buffalo has been sent to the mayor by the Rev. C. C. Penfold, pastor of the Sentinel Methodist Church. The letter is in reply to one sent by Mayor Schwab to the heads of churches, civic associations and other organizations. Mayor Schwab, frightened over the strife he has stirred up in Buffalo, now is attempting to run to cover by appealing "for religious freedom." His attempt as an agent of the Roman corporation to wreck the Protestant Klan organization has failed. Now he is trying to involve other Protestants in his rule of ter

ror. The Rev. Mr. Penfold's letter is as follows: "An Insane Course" "You simply can not have public confidence and continue the perfectly insane course you have persisted in for several weeks past." "The blood of these slain is on you, and your only pardon before God Is that infinite mercy that takes into account human short-sightedness. Y'our motive may have been sincere, but your course has been

The Rev. Mr. Penfold ha3 been

associated with the Rev. L. E. H.

Smith in the cleanup activities of

zz ; the Buffalo Council of. Churches. The ; full text of the Rev. Mr. Penfold's

letter to Mayor Schwab follows:

"Dear Sir: I note with interest

your letter to various religious lead

ers appearing in the papers, in which

you appeal for a cessation of the

present religious strife in the city.

"Permit me to call your attention

to some necessary "preliminary steps to a good understanding. You must publicly announce that you have called off all your anti-Klan activities, and the assignment of

Roche to some useful police duty,

and that you have dropped your

efforts to have certain policemen suspended from the force. You

simply can not have public confi

dence and continue the perfectly in

sane course you have persisted in

for several weeks past. "I know you did not so intend it,

and you will become angry when I say It, but the blood of these slain

is on you, and your only pardon be

fore God is that infinite mercy that takes into account human shortsightedness. Your motive may have

been sincere, but your course has

been, plain stupid and provocative

of strife. Had you even waited for

a shadow of excuse for attacking

the Klan all would be well today. Injustice to Many

"Please do not forget that when one practices deceit he must pay in

some form or other. Espionage is j z so repugnant to the American mind

1 that it is bound to be resented,

S j and possibly with bloodshed. The 5 : publication of that list, and your zz I sinister method of broadcasting its

contents, has been a grave injustice E j to many good loyal citizens, from j which they have no redress save in

j violent reprisals.

"Take in my- own case. Here in zz ' this section of the city, "where sound

S the cries of race and Klan,' I and my zz family have foresworn the good

j things of environment and emolzz j ument which other men of my train-

ing receive for granted. Why? Be-

I cause we believe in the Christian

j ideal of citizenship and life. In the six years of this pastorate we hav'i

ZZ won the love of Catholic, Jew, negro E ' and Protestant alike. But because i E i I have dared to raise my voice i

E against your conception of civic vir- !

tue, you can rue out as a member

of the Klan with the sinister impli

cation that I am disloyal to those

to whom I have given my best. Per

sonally, I don't care. My position is beyond the possibility of harm

from you, but I do care for others.

These policemen, for instance.

"Are they being called to task j because they are poor officers? No.

They are among the best you have,

but they displease you personally

by belonging to an organization that

you don't like.

"Now you must let up first, and unless you do I promise you the

most determined fight you ever ex

perienced. A wrong as deap-seated

as this one can t be righted by a

pious appeal to bishops or any one

else. The cause of strife must be i

eliminated. You must stop. Yon

must make amends. While I don't

anticipate any such contingency, I j promise you that I will take even my own bishop to the mat where a

question of justice is involved.

"Now, please, for the sake of com

munity good will let the matter drop, and if this movement be not of God it will disappear without your or my opposition and I promise you my heartiest co-operation in everything

that is for the city's best interest."

TOMBSTONE, Ariz., Sept. 29. A committee of five 'from Cochise Klan No. .20 of Tombstone and Fairbanks recently visited the Arizona Children's Home In Tucson and presented the management with a substantial check. During the past few months the Klans of Arizona, realizing that the Arizona Children's Home of Tucson needed financial assistance, have

been sending sums of money to the home to be used as seen fit, for the children cared for in that Protestant institution. Children Helped Many children are looked after in the small red brick building located on the south side of the city of Tucson. Yet there are many debts to be paid, and there is quite a lot of opposition to this home. There is a debt on the building, and the home now needs additional room to be used for a hospital; it needs a "wash

room," where the washing ot -the clothes can be done, and it needs more porches around the house so children may have room to play. Some time ago, the Klans of the

r state voted to make a substantial do

nation each month through the office of the Grand Dragon. Not satisfied with this, though, several of the local Klan's gathered a sum of money and turned it over to the home direct. Klansmen are getting a great deal of satisfaction in helping these children, and the program for the coming twelve months made by them includes a large donation to the home.

POLICE HANDLE CROWD AT KLUXER'S FUNERAL APEX, N. C, Sept. 29. For the first time in the history of this little

town it was necessary to have police to handle the traffic. This was because of the crowds in attendance at the funeral of Klansmen Bailey, one of North Carolina's prominent tobacco buyers. Klansmen Bailey was killed in an automobile accident in Georgia and his body brought home for burial. The Klan ceremony was used and as the line of robed Klansmen wound around the hill and up to the grave there was a solemn hush while the hooded knights took their last farewell of their departed brother.

30,000 SEE PARADE OF FREEP0RT KLAN

FREEPORT, L. I., Sept. 29. More than 30,000 spectators lined the streets of this village to watch the parade of the Ku Klux Klan. The authorities had 300 state troopers, several members of the county police and the entire village department on duty, but there were no disturbances. It was estimated that about 2,000 men and women were in the parade. All the paraders wore robes. Several houses along the line of march were decorated, and in some localities the Klansmen were cheered.

Chief of Police John N. Hartman

of this village headed the parade. Then followed about eight or ten mounted men and women carrying a large American flag. Immediately following were the men and women marchers, followed at some distance by the many floats. A float of "Uncle Sam" drew considerable applause, as did the one inscribed "Teach the Bible in the Public Schools." Other floats which were noticed included "America," "Clean Politics," "Protect American Womanhood" and "God Give Us Men."

GOVERNOR AND ELAN SPEAKER ARE HEARD

(Special to The Fiery Cross) CORBIN, Ky., Sept. 29. Governor Fields addressed the largest crowd ever gathered at a Clay county fair. He was followed by a national speaker for the Ku Klux Klan both In the afternoon and evening. Many took the obligations of a Klansman and a large number signed cards for membership in the organization.
