Evansville Klan Official Brings Out Intolerance of Foe, in Speech
Marion County Klan Holds Public Ceremonial
The following address was delivered by Joe M. Huffington before a meeting of Klansmen in Evansville: The enemies of the Ku Klux Klan have stated that they are opposed to tho organization because it wears a robe and helmet. In the early attacks, much was said about "the hooded organization going around with the tar bucket and a bundle of feathers." The attack was carried
on for a long time, but developed Into a cry of "Wolf!" without the wolf ever having been seen or heard. Tho enemy no longer accuses the Klan of being an organization with a tar bucket for they know that such an accusation is forthwith acknowledged by the public as being ridiculous. The enemy has accused the organization for the mere fact that it did have a hood. Many, many people have adorned themselves in all kinds of costumes on different occasions and we failed to find where the mere masking of anyone has caused immediate disgrace and hatred. No sound and thinking person will acknowledge for one moment that it is the visor that the enemies of the Ku Klux Klan detest. No one has ever been hurt by the mask. The thing that causes so much wrath on the part of the enemies of the Klan because of the visor is that it hides
the identity of a great body of true Christian, patriotic American citizens, who are engaged in a battle of principles. These Klansmen clothed
in visors are battling for the princi-
pies of pure the American
Other eaemlM of the Ku Klux Klan have stated that their opposition to the Klan was based on the allegation that the Klan promotes racial and religious hatred. For a
while tho public permitted some of this kind of propaganda to soak in, but today sentiment has changed and the people realize that it is not the Ku Klux Klan that promotes racial and religious hatred, but the un-
American organizations within our gates that are promoting those things. The Ku Klux Klan does not care how any man worships in America. It stands for freedom of religion, which guarantees to every man the right to worship as he pleases, but this freedom does not license him to ramrod his religion down our throats by selting up a church to control the governmental affairs of the United
States. If the enemies of the Klan are guaranteed the right to worship as they please, then what form of criticism should we be subjected to because we wish to worship as we please in America? No Control Over Heart The religious affiliation of every Klansman is Protestant and if being Protestant incites religious hatred, then we must plead guilty, but this certainly can not be true, and if it is, we do not care; for Protestant we are and Protestant we will be rej gardless of how excited the enemies of Protestantism may become. do not condemn the American generals for protecting the American boys from the fire of the enemy
in every way possible. The difference that exist now in America is that the boys who fought in the world war were fighting to protect the soil and the great army of Christian crusaders today who are fighting under the leadership of the Ku
Klux Klan are fighting to protect the soul or the spirit of America. The enemy is entrenched in many different secret societies of all kinds and is using camouflage of most striking means. Then, is not the Klan entitled to protect itself from the ambushed enemy by not having a pub-licly-known membership? Have Had Free Rein It is a fact that the enemies of the principles for which the Ku Klux Klan stands are concerned more about a way to get at these expo-
nent of pure American doctrine than they are about the hood and when they find themselves confronted with difficulty they naturally howl. It is the "hit dog" that always howls. Heretofore, the organized enemies of American principles have had a free rein and it is nothing but natural that at this

times! The -great sinister motive has been overlooked overlooked too long for the welfare of America. Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly is guaranteed to us by the great Constitution of the United States, yet organized groups of peoples and creeds in America have tried their hardest to prevent the Klan from holding its meetings. They did not stop the meetings of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan because it was a Klan. They don't care whether it is a Klan or whatnot. They don't care whether you are a Klansman or whatnot, but they
do care whether or not you are an active American citizen. It is not the words "Ku Klux Klan" that they hate, but it is the things for which the Ku Klux stands. A tree is known by the fruit it bears, so Christ said, and this tree has borne fruit of active, aggressive, militant Christian-

fell because it was a nation of mongrels. The Klan stands for pure -womanhood and the libertine is anti-Klan for this reason. Thetlan stands for the upholding of the Constitution of the United States and the bolshevik and other enemies thereof are anti-Klan. The Klan stands for the separation of church and state and those
wko would have the government of the United States subverted to the rule of church over state are antiKlan. The Klan interferes with such a movement and interference brings condemnation from those people who
would violate this great principle of Americanism. Freedom of Speech The Klin believes in freedom of speech avid press and those who would hinder the freedom of speech and press, except in their own par
ticular line of thought, are listed as anti-Klan. The Klan stands for a
close relationship between capital and American labor and does not believe in the importation of foreign,
ignorant hordes to supplant the I American worklngman in his own country. Those who would do this are anti-Klan. The Klan stands out against all kinds of foreign agitators and those and their sympathizers who are antiKlan. The Klan believes in limitation of foreign immigration for the protec
tion of the best Interests of the American and those who believe in the open gates and the flooding of America with the human sewerage of the world are anti-Klan. The Klan believes in the support
of the law and those who would subvert the laws of the nation are antiKlan. You can readily see why there are so many enemies of the Klan and any man or any set of men Who are anti-Klan are anti-Klan for some
reason.
The great and powerful anti-American influences in this country are not to be scoffed at, for they are today so powerful indeed that they have been able to compel national leaders to recognize them in many ways. was my fault. I expect, for butting into what wasn't my business." These were the words of Leo Manning, who is in the hospital with a leg full of buckshot, after a night spent with a gang of Roman Catholic
thugs bent on doing bodily injury to any one thought to belong to the Ku Klux Klan. It is reported that Manning tried to set fire to the building where the Klan had been holding meetings, and that he was shot during the attempt. Who shot him has not yet been brought to light, but it is whispered in the inner circles of the Romaa system that one of Its own men, taking Manning for a Klansman, fired the shot. The town was in an uproar, for the enemies of the order of native-
born Americans had gathered to make all the trouble possible after
the word had gone out that the Klan would hold a parade. Gunmen were seen in many places on the streets. Eager to Ambush The fact that the Klansmen did
not parade caused quite a little discontent among the alien forces -who
were eager to ambush Protestants.
Sheriff Joe Edge, of Grant county, gathered a large number of strange men, it is said, deputizing them to intimidate any one suspected of be
ing a Klansman. It is believed that the concerted- effort to stop Americans from organizing in Muscoda and surrounding territory is part of a well-laid plot of the collected forces of the pro-wet, pro-parochial, and pro-Roman Catholics. Much Stir
The whole affair has caused quite a stir in the county, and citizens are outspoken in their views on the matter. That Protestants should be subjected to such barbarous methods as are continually used by the Italian road-roller system, is causing a wonderful awakening throughout this vicinity.
(Special to The Fiery Cross) LEBANON, Ky., Sept. 29. Klansmen are aiding citizens in Taylor county to raise $30,000 in order to turn the turnpike from Marion county to Adair county over to the state and thus remove the tollgates. It seems to be a successful under
taking. A Klansman and a minister recently helped the towTn sheriff in two different attacks on moonshine distilleries.
ALIEX EFFORTS FAIL MT. VERNON, Ky., Sept. 29. After trying to break up a Klan
meeting by passing handbills stating that Judge Tarter would make a Republican address at the courthouse, the politicians of this city were disappointed to find that Judge Tarter did not show up. A speaker for the Ku Klux Klan mounted the platform and made a successful address to over 350 people.
(Special to The Fiery Cross) KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 29. Because he is a Klansman and, therefore, in great danger of attacks
from the alien enemies of the Ku Klux Klan, V. T. Proctor, an organizer for the order, has been refused a life insurance policy by the Citi
zens' Insurance Company of Missouri. According to the view taken by the company it is dangerous to be "outspoken" or active in the practice of pure Americanism. Cancels Policy The following letter was forwarded to a Nebraska agent of the
Citizens Insurance Company: June 24, 1924. Flower & Porterfleld, Dolan Bldg., Grand Island, Neb. Gentlemen : Policy No. 100230 V. T. Proctor.
It is out seldom that I write a personal letter or criticize any of your business, but I do not believe we are justified in carrying insurance for this party a Ku Klux Klan
organizer. We treat him in the same
category as a business agent of a union, bricklayers, etc. There is a constant fight between the outside and inside in all these organizations and in view of the very strong sentiment at present against the Ku Klux do not believe we are justified in continuing the business. I can not help but think you will agree with me after reviewing what I have said. There is no moral hazard as far as the ownership is concerned only from the feeling in general. Trusting you will forward canceled document at an early date. We remain.
MILWAUKEE, Wis., Sept. 29. The defeat of Frank L. Fawcett for renomlnation in the race for district attorney came as a shock to the Roman Catholic churches where Mr. Fawcett's literature had been distributed every 8unday. While Mr. Fawbett's idea -was to defeat his opponent, District Attorney Wengert, by his drive through the Roman Catholic churches and his anti-Klan attitude, he was beaten by a 2-to-l vote.
Roman Reasons Some of the literature distributed
In the Roman Catholic churches in an effort by the Roman system to elect Fawcett, shows a list of per
sons with foreign names who supported his candidacy. One of the letters closes as follows: "It is true Fawcett has a CatholitT wife. "It is true Fawcett is attacked by the K. K. K.'s. "It is true that Fawcett is attacked because of his friendship for us. "It is true Fawcett is entitled to our support, "It is true duty calls us to vote and work for Fawcett.
"Yours for a square deal, "Mrs. G. A. Hecht, "Mrs. Victor Manhardt, "Mrs. Ellen Hussey, "Miss Jane McCarthy." The Roman Catholic church denies that it is in politics. That the Roman church was behind Fawcett can not be denied after the literature that was passed and sponsored by the church.
Hazard Too Great On July 9, 1924, formal notice of cancellation of this policy was forwarded to Mr. Proctor over the signature of J. D. Vail, assistant general agent, the Citizens Insurance Company of Missouri, in which no cause was set forth.

Kigure it out for yourseU. The source of enmity in most case3 can
be traced to the principles of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan stands for the Christian religion. The Jewish people do not stand for such and naturally are not in favor of any organization no matter what its name may be that promotes and increases Christianity. Those of the colored races, who wish to mix their blood with that of the white race, have disliked the Ku
Klux Klan because the Klan stands 1 for one blood. Tho Klan can offer no apology for such a stand. The black, yellow, brown and every other ' race should stand for the same thing and most of their leaders do, but
those of these races who have wished to mix breeds and make America a nation of mongrels, dislike the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan believes that the black man should be black, that the white man should be white, that the yellow man should be yellow, that the brown man Ehould be brown, and so on through the line of races. It does not believe in the mixture of races. If this is crime and creates racial hatred, then no apology should be forthcoming, for ancient Rome
president of the United States of America to be against these fifteen millions of people and the principles for which they stand. No man is more than his principle. No organization is more or less than its principle. The Klansmen and their families of this nation, regardless of their political affiliations, have been stunned. The true American people have been astounded when brought face to face with the outspoken attack made by the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket and the presidential candidate on the
Democratic ticket.
A Regrettable Fact It is regrettable that' these men who aspire ta the highest public trust should be against so great a number of the people. How in the name of the Almighty can a man take an oath to administer Justice
when his breath is still tainted by the foul utterances of animosity towards so large groups of people. How can he preside justly over people whom he has publicly declared himself fo be against. The Bible says, "Thou can not serve God and Mammon," and further states that "No man can serve two masters." Does J. W. Davis undertake td serve two masters in contradiction of God's own word? WASHINGTON, Sept. 29. The Ku

McCall is assistant district attorney for the District of Columbia and is well known as a lawyer. She said: "The Ku Klux Klan is not the menace of society today. The real menace is lawlessness. Where the Klan has been able to live and thrive are the communjties that harbor corruptness and lawlessness. The Klan is only one way of protesting at the situation.
(Special to The Fiery Cross) DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 28. Twelve years after their marriage by a Catholic priest, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Willis of this city renewed their vows in a Protestant ceremony at the Oak Street United Brethren Church Thursday night. Mr. Willis, who was born and reared a Protestant, consented to having the original ceremony performed in the Catholic church because his bride was of that faith, but several years ago she renounced the Romanist church and
became a Protestant by her own choice. Although Mrs. Willis has been ostracized by her Catholic
friends and relatives, she declares she is happier than ever beforerThe
attendants at the Protestant ceremony were attired in Klan regalia.
UPTON, Mass., Sept 29 A stirring tribute to the Kn Klux Klan was given in the First Methodist Church here recently by Rev. Clare L. Van Metre. Rev. Van Metre, a Scotchman, declaring that he spoke as a nonmember, said that he would not go into all the virtues of the Klan on that particular Sunday "as there will be other Sundays this fall and win
ter for further talk." He declared that the outstanding aims of the Klan were the uniting of all Protestants in the common cause of Americanism, the upholding
of the laws of the country, the up
building of the public schools, and the prosecution of all offenders against the dry law. Sermon Pleases In speaking of the schools, the minister declared that "we must keep our public schools truly public
schools, schools where all of the children cf all of the people will be instructed in pure American ideas."
His praise of the Klan gained much approval in this town, where many of the inhabitants are descendants of the Puritans, who came to America to escape the domination of an established church.
LEACHVILLE, Ark., Sept. 29. An anti-Klan meeting was recently held at Hancock, this county. Some of the speakers advised taking shotguns and shooting members of the order if they could not be gotten rid of in any other way. This rabid
suggestion was condemned and repudiated by Oliver Hurst of Monette,
the principal speaker. The Leach-
ville Star, commenting on the meeting, says:
"We do not know what position
Leachville anti speakers at the meet
ing took, but wouldn't It look funny to see some of Leachville's antia shouldering their guns and going out and shooting their personal friends whom they suspect of belonging to this organization? However, we do not believe they would have to shoot any bootleggers, gamblers, or other law violators, to get rid of the Ku Klux."
THOUSANDS OP ALIENS SLIP IN FROM MEXICO
SAN ANTONIO, Tex., Sept. 29. Investigation shows that there are thousands of aliens waiting in Mexico for a chance to slip by immigration inspectors and come into thisi country. The majority are of undesirable races and efforts are being made to stem the tide of the unwelcome immigrants. Additional inspectors are being placed along the border from El Paso to San Antonio in an effort to stop them. There seems to be a "smuggler's ring" in full operation and a number of Spaniards believed to have been smuggled across the border are being held to ascertain who conducts the smug
