"Eight Immigrants Are Passed Each Minute"
JWhen the immigration law now on the statute books was pending in Congress, and when public attention was consequently directed so intensely to that subject, Dr. Spencer L. Dawes, medical examiner of the New York State Hospital Commission, gave some illuminating information as to the laxness with which the immigration law then in force was handled by the department of labor.
His statement, which has the appearance of accuracy, disclosed the wholesale manner in which immigrants both physically and mentally defective were being admitted to the United States through covert political influence in violation of the law. The followingAssociated Press roport of his statement appeared in Tho Evening Star, of Washington, April 22, this year: NEW YORK, April 22. Mentally and physically defective aliens are being admitted to the United States dally through the exertion of po
litical influence on the Department
of Labor, Dr. Spencer Ij. Dawes, medical examiner of the New York State Hospital Commission, declared yesterday before an Institute of Occupational Therapists from several Btates. "Three thousand aliens who were excluded by physicians were admitted later without bond, and 12,000 'otherwise admitted,' according to the 1922 report of the commission rgenerul of immigration," Dr. Dawes declared. lie said he had watched
aliens examined at the rate of eight
a minute.
The question naturally suggests
itself whether executive authorities that so winked at the three per cent immigration law then in force will
likewise connive at evasion of the selective two per cent law enacted by the sixty-eighth Congress. The
political influence that is alleged to have caused the department of labor to threaten Dr. Dawes and has caused him to be threatened with
libel suits must have been exerted by
enemies of immigration restriction
That no adequate physical or mental examination of immigrants can
be made at the rate of eight per
sons a minute Is manifest. Any
pretense of doing so ia mere sham
Executive authorities who thus ad
mit thousands of defectives without the required examination and bond
are not friends of the United States
They should be sternly disciplined and made to obey the law or be
promptly and permanently retired from the service. The Protestant.

Vitriolic Attack Acts as a Boomerang
When two very rich young moral degenerates foully murdered another youth at Chicago, those acquainted with propaganda methods of the Roman press and of the hierarchy that controls it fully expected that the crime would be exported in the periodicals of Rome asi an indictment of our American schools. That expectation was promptly realized. On June 7 The Tablet,
diocesan organ of the Roman bishop enthroned in Brooklyn, devoted noarly all of the second column on its front page to a bitter arraignment of American colleges under the heading, "Colleges Do Not Educate the Soul." The vitriolic attack in the Roman periodical was bafsed on statements which a Lutheran minister was alleged to have made. The three young men involved in the shocking tragedy appear to have Jewish names and are therefore probably neither Protestants nor Roman Catholics, though Isidore Dackweiler, David Goldstein and some others with such names are in" tact noisy and militant Knights of Columbus. The slain young man
was Robert Franks and those charged with his murder are Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. But, while using that horrible Jragedy. to libel -and malign out in-

stitutions of higher learning. The Tablet made no such application of the incident appearing inconspicuously at the foot ot the same page headed, "Kills Priest Giving Rites to His Father." If the nwful murder committed apparently by two young Hebrew degenerates in Chicago was due to lack of Roman training in school, what caused the son of a Roman Catholic at Lowell, Massachusetts, to murder a priest of Rome who was
administering the Roman sacrament of extreme unction to the father of the murderer? Was that due to his Roman training? Was it Roman Catholic education
that incited Karl Janorek to shoot Priest Seipel, premier of Roman Catholic Austria, a month or so ago near the railway station in Vienna where Roman Catholic education Is forced upon all students in all schools? What causes the revolution and violence that devastates or menaces Roman Catholic Latin America nearly all the time?

MINNEAPOLIS, July 14. North
Star Klan No. 2, of this city, ha3 equipped one of the most unusual Klaverns for its out-of-doors Klonklaves that can be found anywhere in the United States. Two large excavations, made by removing gravel from a gravel pit, connected by a passageway, hive been developed into a Klavern and ante-room, which not only provides convenient accommodations for the usual business sessions of the Klan, but also furnishes a striking setting for naturalization ceremonies and
cares for several thousand spectators, wi,th all of them able to witness the .work to the very' best advantage.
Center of Grounds The Klavern is situated in almost the center of about sixteen acres of beautifully wooded grounds, which are well fenced in and posted with "No trespass" signs. The acoustic properties of the Klavern proper are very fine. Instead of the wool altars and stations which are generally used, the stations have been constructed of natural stone boulders, laid, up in cement. The entire park, which is used in connection with Klan
work at. the Klonverses, is electri
cally lighted, and a steel storehouse insures safety for such, equipment
as has to be left at the grounds.
A sectional cross forty feet high
occupies the highest point of the tract, directly adjacent to the Klavern itself, and presents a striking and impressive appearance when
outlined with close-set electric lights,
which make It a conspicuous object for many miles in all directions. Side by side with the cross, rises
a tall flagpole, from which old Rlory" is flung to the breeze at every mooting, clearly visible on the dark est nisht in the glow - of electric lights. Powerfnl Searchlight A searchlight of high power sends its rays over the grounds during nisht meetings, to help white robed guards in their duty of keeping out all possible intruders. The refreshment feature has not
j been neglected. A barbeiue pit has ! been dug, and convenient pro
vision made- so that refreshments can be provided whenever desired. Klansmen from all sections of the realm are meeting with North Star at almost, every Klonklave, and are always welcome.

The Ku Klux Klan is not of recent birth; that is, the impelling force behind this great American organization is not. The Klan is the crystallization of a sentiment, or thought of ages, that has taken concrete form and is named the Ku Klux Klan.
For centuries human thought has battled against tyranny ; for centuries the world has sought enlightenment and educa
tion. And just for that same length of time, despots, regardless of what might' have been their .titles,, have fought against those greater minds that rose above the masses held in ignorance by those who have usurped the God-given right of man.
Despite the dark ages, the1 Spanish inquisition, the massacre of the Huguenots, and the innumerable acts of a like nature, which were devised and
carried out by that same power
that today would disrupt the American school system, desrroy her freedom and manaele

the Ku Klux YSMFTrmm
The Ku Klux Klan is an organiza
tion of persons persistent in their fight for all things American. It is an organization determined that i Right shall rule ; a great militant Christian body which determines that no political body operating under the guise of religion shall take from Americans their liberty. The Ku Klux Klan is alive to the encroachments on our liberties. It is thoroughly conversant with the history of that political ring from the time of its inception. Because of the fact that the millions of persons in America, who swear alle
giance to a foreign potentate, are unaware that this system, headed by this foreign potentate, has learned
the precise point to which intellect-!
ual culture may be carried without the risk of intellectual emancipa tion, the Ku Klux Klan is called an enemy to these millions.
The Right to Worship This American organization is not
an enemy to the Catholic, nor would
it deprive the Catholic of his right
to worship as he desired; but It is
an avowed foe of the Roman Catholic heirarchy, which would make
America subservient to Rome. Why: Because where Rome rules educa
tion, enlightenment and liberty have
no part. Any person may success
fully refute this statement by naming one foreign country in which
this statement does not hold true.
The Ku Klux Klan is not an
enemy of the Jewish religion. It is truo that each person, to become a
member of the Klan, must believe in the Now Testament, and that Christ came to the earth 2,000 years
ago and performed the acts recorded
in the New Testament. While it is true that no Jew can become a mem
ber of the Klan, it is also true that
no member of the Klan is eligible to Jewish 'orders, for which fact the
Klan does not censure the Jew, as it believes it Is the moral and lawful right of the Jew to have an organization to which none but Jews may belong.
The Ku Klux Klan is not an
enemy of the negro. In fact, many
cases are recorded wherein worthy negroes have been materially aided in time of misfortune by the Klan
in towns where they lived. It la a
matter of record that a negress was
openly commended and financially rewarded for an act of heroism in Texas. Klansmen have contributed
to negro churches and protected
negroes from mobs bent on lynch ing. Propaganda Furnished
The fact that the Ku Klux Klan
believes in white supremacy has furnished much propaganda for the
enemy to use- among the negro population; inciting hatred for the Klan in that quarter; although
thousands of intelligent negroe&
realize the meaning of the sentiment expressed, by tiia- nhrase, "white
supremacy," and are not excited by
the slanderers ot the Klan.
