Why Does Chicago Tribune Restrict Criticism to Protestant Denomination?
Because a committee of- the Methodist Episcopal Conference passed a resolution of a decidedly pacifist character, the Chicago Daily Tribune solemnly warns that great organization against "the tendency to put the church as an organization in the field of politics and government." "If it is the function of a church," says the Tribune editorial, pontincally, "acting as an organized body, to pass upon the act of state declaring oj maintaining war, it is its function to intervene in any other act of state, a tax, for example, con sidered oppressive, or any other act ueemeu contrary to any moral -or religious judgment." This is most excellent logic, and a conclusion upon which the church is acting more and more. The mis sion of the church Includes and greatly exceeds the definition placed upon It by the Tribune when it declares: "there is but one proper way for the clergy (as clergy) and the churches to make reason and the will of God prevail in the po litical course of the nation, and that is by their influence over the con science of the individual." The Rig-lit to Agitate The mission of the church is no less than the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth. In this nation millions of Christians pray inceasmgly : "Thy Kingdom Come" and while praying for it, and preach ing It, shall they be inhibited from making an organized effort to an swer their own prayers? The right to agitate for any cause carries with It the right to organize. According to the Tribune's con tcntion, it is perfectly proper for Tammany, for the "wets," for "big business," and every other non-religious movement to organize itself for political ends, but not the church. Preach but don't plant a political program. Indulge in all the futile eloquence you wish, but :lo not seek to put your exhorta tions Into concrete, form. The real test of the right of the church to make itself a force in politics depends upon the extent to which it keeps moral and righteous judgment" as the touchstone. When a church goes Into politics to ad vance its own sectarian interests at the expense of the community or of national welfare, or in unjust disrrimination against other churches it falls short of its divine commis sion. Why does the Tribuno restrict Its criticism to a Protestant denornlna lion? Why does it not lift its clarion voice of condemnation against that church whose sectarian political ac livitics have been a disturbing factor in our national lite for generations "Is Not. a True Catholic" Monsignor Preston, as reported in The Nl"7 York Herald, long ago made clear the attitude i,f the church in the words: "It is said that politics is not within the province of the church, and that the church lias jurisdiction only In matters of faith. You say 'I will receive my faith from the pontiff, but I will not receive my politics from him!' This assertion is disloyal and untruthful. You must not think as you choose. You must think as Catholics. The man who says, 'I will take my faith from Peter, but I will not take my politics from Potrr,' is not a true Catholic." If the Tribune wishes a significant text upon which to write a flaming editorial on the evil of ecclesiastical and foreign influences in American politics, there it is. With the continued closing of cabarets by New York authorities, it appears possible that the banana shortage will be replaced by a shortage In padlocks. F. L. CAREY, D. C. U.S.INNEED0FLAW TO DEPORT ALMS, SAYS MAGISTRATE
George W. Simpson Would Use Measure to Send Home Law Violators Many Frankly Admit They Have No Intention of Becoming U. S. CltfSens NEW YORK, June 16. One of the most forceful arguments yet pre senter! in ravor or restricted immigration and at the same time ex plaining the alien situation in this country recently was advanced by Magistrate George w. Simpson of this city. It has been known for some time that the foreigners who were coming to our country were not of the most desirable type and that they were causing much trouble because of their numerous infractions of the laws of this nation. Magistrate Simpson issued the following statement, which is worthy of note: "During the world war we heard a great deal about the 'melting' pot process or. America In absorbing its vast polyglot population.. Of late there has been less talk or discus sion on good citizenship and ways and means of developing It for the newcomer. It is high time some one took the necessary action to stir up tnese aliens who have lived among us lor one and two decades. Would Send Thera Back If I had anything to do with the enactment of federal legislation af fecting the period of residence of an alien and citizenship I would draft laws that would send back to the countries from which they came au foreigners who spent seven years in America and had failed to make an effort to take out first naturaliza tion papers. inrougnout tnis city there are thousands of aliens who have fam ilies, bank accounts, real estate hold Ings, the protection of our laws, etc., and they do not represent Immi grants of five years ago, but as far back as fifteen and twenty-five years ago. ' They are brought into our courts for various infractions of the law and they stand before us and admit they have absolutely no intention of becoming a part of our bountiful and blessed nation. It seems an impossible situation and a problem that mignt appear unreal, but neverthe less it is something that can not be disproved. First to Break Lavs ' It is my contention and I make n reservations for any particular roreign nationality, that the man who has lived here the period of years required for naturalization ana nas failed to become or 16 try to Decome an American citizen is not worth having among our people "I have found in several Instances during my work in magistrates' courts that aliens are the first to break the laws and the first to appeal to them. I know of a number of cases where the vindictlveness of an alien has brought an American citizen into court. "Our city government spends huge sums of money for evening schools for the education of its foreign populace, and in many cases you will find that the alien who is not interested in becoming a citizen can not read or write, and is likewise not interested in any free educa-. tional features which are offered here. Money Their God "Most of them know only, how to make money and it is to this object that they dedicate their efforts, eliminating all other thoughts or actions which would make them good citizens. "The present time is propitious for developing new citizens. We do not have to wait until another war comes along. Some people might believe the enactment of a deportation law alter seven years' residence as being harsh, but I am for it. It is just as necessary to legislate in this direction as it is to legislate against immigration. Citizenship, as I view it. makes for respect of laws, our government and our national welfare. Non-citizenship and confessed indifference have the opposite effect." K. K. K. PEV5ANTS ' Red, White and Blue Sample for 50c Wholesale, per doz J3.00 1 00O for $225.00 K. K. K. The Flag Means Liberty
On last Saturday, June 14, Amer-" leans paid honor to their national emblem, "the occasion being Flag Day. The flag was honored not because it is pretty, not because it is red and white and blue, not because it is the personal possession of every American, but because of what it means, what it stands for, -what it typifies, what it prays and what it hopes! It means liberty; liberty of thought, liberty of conscience, liberty of action within just laws, liberty of worship, liberty of government. It stands for law and order. protection and security, justice and a square deal, honor and righteous ness, it typmes tne weals or a hundred and ten millions of people, tne neritage they have taken from the hands of the mighty forefathers. the torch of happiness in equal op portunity nt in 1776 and kept brightly burning ever since. It prays ror strengtn to keep our vision clear; aye, that flag, flying in the breeze, is an American's prayer to God for strength to keep what he has won of truth and right, for wisaom to continue upon earth those social and political liberties which make this God's country. And it hopes! Its proud flutter in the wind. its beauty overhead, is an outward and visible symbol to all the world of the inner and spiritual hope of every thinking American that this nation, under God, may so act and live that His blessing may continue to rest upon it.
