"BAPTIST" OF BAY CITY. MICHIGAN, WRITES THE FIERY CROSS DENYING THE SOUTH BEND RIOT DECLARES "ROME IS RIGHT" PECULIAR STAND IS TAKEN BY A PROTESTANT (?)
We are herewith printing verbatim (with the exceptiort-of spelling and punctuation) a letter received from ft "Roman Baptist" In Bay City, Michigan. While it is quite apparent lt the letter was written by a Roman Catholic, the writer declares himself (or herself) to be a Baptist. The letter follows: Bay City, Mich. Ontlemen : If you wish to refer to American CllUenship do so in an American inunner. Who ever heard of a man becoming a failure simply because he stood for right and honorable principles? Does a man excommunicate himself merely by joining an organization that is founded on the tenets of the Christian religion? It would have been far belter to have told - this alien to go back to the land from whence he came and not bite the hand that is feeding him. rather than kneel in suppliance to him. - The man who is afraid of losing trade is like the child with its hands full of apules. He tries to pick up another and drops three. Klansmen do not boycott a. merchant because he does not belong to the organization, but when we find one who joins because he thinks it his duty, we feel that lie is pretty square in all things and is u good man to tie to. that the Roman Catholic church is alone Christ's church. That hardly sounds like a Baptist but typifies the Roman Catholic's attitude toward the Protestant that the Protestant is anti-Christ. Baptists do not refer to the Roman Catholic church as "The Church." The writer does. The writer, in touching on the riot at South Bend recently, in which students of Notre Dame, a Roman Catholic institution, stoned and tore up American .flags and assaulted Protestants among other un-Ameri-
i can and unlawful acts, has Notrp Duine confused with South Bend and in an effort tn ilefenrl hi iioin declares he was "in Notre Dame on that day and the story of the riot is a lie" Tim f xt,. Daine students were guilty of the eToZ h - be.n necessao for him to have Ul,,.1lrn,l a pass. as the campus and university wefc closed to the public on that day ancl had been for weeks previous. If there was no riot it would be interesting to learn on just what charges the students, who filled the jail, were arrested. It is gratifying, however, to know that Roman Catholics are reading The Fiery Cross. The letter reproduced above reveals just why the Roman Catholic is so bitter toward the Klan. The fact that the writer of the letter from Bay City has been made to believe the story of the riot to be a lie, not only shows that the Roman Catholic believes the Protestant papers of the country are print- ! inn lies about them, but shows how easily these same Roman Catholics can be made to believe anything about the Klan by those same persons who make "them believe that such things as the riot by Notre Dame students at South Bend did not take place. as a Klansman stand for a principle, regardless of the dollar. The time for being on the fence is past. You must declare yourself one way or the other. If you think the bootlegger, moonshiner, homewrecker and other lawbreakers, must be allowed to ply their trade :n open violation of the laws of God and man, simply because you must have their patronage, then you had better lock up before the sheriff does the job for you, for the time is coming when the better element must stand together and right the evils that lie before us. Sooner ,o.r later this lax condition of affairs may sty-ike directly at your hoWanrt -trfttprt'gfct that you .avail ill e loud and iong. Why not leClurt yourself for .better taw enforcement before this happens and save yourself the resulting Borrow? You grumble and" complain about the way the country, the state, or city is run, but do you make any effort to correct those evils? No. When you are asked to join an organization that stands for better conditions, you can nnt afford to, because it might hurt your business. Don't you suppose that if you lost one bootlegger's trade that three respectable citizens would step in to fill the gap? Not one single instance is on record where a man has failed in business because he is a Klansman, because there are too hiany million of is and more coming, to let this come to pass. Don't wait to see which way the wind blows, because you may be too late. How about Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, and other states. You bad better make your stand for right while there is yet time or later we may think you are trying to commercialize your membership, and pass you up. Do it now. need. This was amply demonstrated here Sunday when members of the local organization donated $100 to Warren Lodge, an ex-service man whose chicken business was practically ruined by fire recently. Lodge was shell-shocked in France and the government set him up in the poultry business upon his return. He had a farm of 1,400 chickens, about 700 of which were ready to market at the time of his misfortune. Massachusetts and the Pension Veto Assailed WASHINGTON, May 26. President Coolidge's veto of the Bursum pension bill was criticized in the House Wednesday by Representa tive Sherwood, Democrat, of Ohio, a Civil War veteran, who declared that in view of the "damning record of extravagance and waste in the Army and Navy appropriations, the President's claim of economv is a false pretense and a cruel deceit." Mr. bherwbod asserted that this "is the first time since George Washington that any President has classed pension legislation for soldiers as class legislation." The Cape Cod canal project, however, Mr. Sherwood added, is a "pretty illustration of class legislation and the kind of economy we are now realizing." Explaining that the canal would cost about $20,000,000, the Ohio member declared that the project was an "Administration scheme, recommended by a Massachusetts Secretary of War, approved by a Massachusetts President, put through the House by a Massachusetts committee chairman and presided over by a Massachusetts Speaker, and for the benefit of a Massachusetts corporation." Voices From the Field Some Unanswered Questions C. E. L., of San Francisco, has had some letters - to the editor of the Daily News of that city. Some of his articles aroused a Roman Catholic, who replied to them in the most bitter tone, but when .C. E. L. sent the following to the Daily News the editor refused to publish it. He sends it to The Fiery Cross for the "Voices From the Field" column: Since "Anti-K. K. K." has sidestepped my questions, I would like to ask both him and "Citizen" a few each. Why do reliable statistics state that 90 per cent of the prisoners of our state prisons and reformatories throughout the United States belong to the same following that are fighting the Ku Klux Klan? Why are "bootleggers," underworld habitues, and lawbreakers generally, controlled by this same following, who are also trying to repeal our United States prohibition law, kill our "Sterling-Towner bill," and degrade our public schools? Why have not native-born Ameri can Protestants the same right to organize for their own protection and benefit, and have the right to say who shall be their own members, as have the Jew, the negro, the German or the Roman Catholic, each of whom admit to their own organizations only such members as are loyal to their own church and teachings? America has always been a Protestant nation, even unto tthe landing of our Pilgrim Fathers, and the fact that America has absorbed without protest for years past, the "scum of Europe," is no sign that native-born Americans a .rninir tn allnw this law-defying Slement to continue to seep in, destroy 9r" morals, and make our beloved America the, "joke of the world!" . .-w- " -x - not reier t the;tens of thoueandajof emigrants who have come into our great country and proven themselves loyal "adopted" Americans by obeying our laws, holding sabred the "ideals" of their new "land of promise," by fighting with and for their new adopted country in all things honorable. - The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan have no "fight" with such as these! But it is our "fight" when this above law-defying element strives to contaminate to their own unholy use everything that we, as loyal Americans, hold dear, and that to satisfy their greed to "rule the world" and to destroy what they know they can not control. And while I may not live to see the day, I fully believe our honored, martyred President Lincoln's prophesy will yet come true, and our honored General George Washington of Revolutionary days was right, when ho gave the command: "Put none but Americans on guard!" Building: a Chnrch Editor The Fiery Cress: Dear Sir: A few days agol placed in the columns of The Fiery Jlross an announcement that a new Protestant church would be established. I hardly expected to meet with such overwhelming success as has already come to this feeble effort which has been made and I promised at that time to report the progress. This work is no longer a dream as the following report will snow: On the night of April IS we met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Baggarly, 4122 East Sixteenth street, Indianapolis, and talked over the prospects of starting a church and Sun day school in the community. Eight een persons were present, the ma jority being women. We arranged the first Bible school to be held in the same home on Easter Sunday afternoon at 2:30. This call was responded to with an attendance of sixty-eight, with a sub stantial offering. Being without supplies of any de - scription, we held a service briefly and then formulated a temporary

organization with Mrs. Minola Hardman as superintendent. The lollowing Thursday evening we held a business meeting and selected supplies for the Bible school and appointed a building committee with authority to solicit funds. Sunday, April 27, the attendance was seventy-two and on Sunday, May 4, the attendance was seventy-five. We went from this service to view some lots for building purposes and before we separated we had raised $495. Thus the good work goes on C. M. HAMILTON. Beech Grove, Ind. Opposed to Sunday Baseball Editor The Fiery Cross: Dear Sir: It occurs to me that in the announcement under the heading "Play Ball," in The Fiery Cross of May 2. the manager of the Terre Haute Klan team is not altogether in harmony with the Klan's program for 1924 Article 1: "Militant, oldfashioned Christianity and operative patriotism." A new high record for traffic in one direction on one day through the Panama Canal was set on May 2, when fifteen vessels made the transit from the Pacific to the Atlantic, according to an official announcement at the war department. The number of transits was the same as in the traffic from the Atlantic to the Pacific on May 25, 192J, but the northbound traffic on May-2, 1924, exceeds former records in other respects. Another Space-Time Conquest Like most other discoveries in applied electricity, the transmission of photographs by wire or wireless is a new triumph over space and time limitations. The new invention will elimina the space that separates us when we desire to see what is gcing on elsowJiere, and the time formerly wasted; in waiting for pictures of persons and events elsewhere, perhaps thousands of miles away. For there appears to be no limit to the capacity of the invention except the failure of the current or wireless impulse that works the machines. Perhaps the most wonderful feature of this picture-producing mechanism-is the perfection of its synchronizing parts. With the aid of tuning forks two cylinders miles apart rotate as one, starting, revolving and stopping at exactly the same instant. Without this precision which might be said to eliminate time, the picture would be a blur. The Imagination is stirred by sucht Une - ht to he tn hrt s. WISCONSIN GOVERNOR
IS ASKEDQUESTIONS Badger State Executive Jumps on Klan Organization With Both Feet (Bureau Publication and Education) WASHINGTON, May 31. A party residing in Freeport, Illinois, writes to Klan headquarters concerning the attitude of Governor John J. Blaine, of Wisconsin, who has openly criticised the Klan and says there is "no good reason for its existence." Governor Blaine m his criticism of the Klan preaches pretty good doctrine when he quotes the Wiscon sin constitution and likewise the constitution of the United States which is boosting the Klan, although the governor does not appear to know it. He says: 'The constitution of Wisconsin provides that the right of every man to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of his own conscience shall never be infringed nor shall any control of, or interference with, the rights of conscience be permitted." The governor also quoted from the national constitution on the same subject. Then he goes on to knock as follows: ""The Klan is a species of invisible government, secret government, its membership is unknown and there is no -good reason for its existence." The Freeport writer asks a few pointed questions as follows: "Is Governor Blaine a Roman Catholic? "If not, then when he is denouncing the Klan, why doesn't he- denounce the K. of C? Upholds Freedom of Worship "If I understand the Klan ideals it upholds the freedom of worship as every one sees fit; its principles are not secret. If this is a free country the Klan has just as good a right to exist as any other order. "What does the K. of C. stand for anyway? Does it make known its secrets? What are its principles? Can a Protestant belong and participate? Does not Rome work in secret. And all Rome's helpers don't they work in an underhanded way? Why does Rome fight the Klan? All past history proves there was never a freedom where Rome ruled. "It seems to me that Governor Blaine and a lot of weak-kneed Protestants, too, for that matter, are blind to the truth and the dangers of their freedom. I do not belong to any order but I stand for the same principles the Klan does and I am sure the Klan is necessary for this country's safety. It has enemies among people who claim to be true Americans but they are not. No one can be true to freedom and honor a Pope who makes his dupes believe he has authority from God."
