SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 14. A telegram condemning the attitude of Nicholas Murray Butler and denying that he conveys the sentiments of the National Educational Association read here at the Methodist General Conference was received with great applause from the delegates. It read as follows: "Nicholas Murray Butler does not represent the National Education

Association in his utterances on prohibition nor is he the spokesman of the association on matters pertaining to the common schools. He recently charges public schools with the responsibility of lawlessness of the country which has ' greatly angered teachers and school authorities. "JOHN W. CRABTREE. "Executive Secretary o National Education Association." This action of the executive secretary of the National Education Association, representing a vast majority of the teachers in the schools and colleges of the United States, i was taken, by delegates, to confirm

, the previous conviction of delegates j lie re that prohibition has behind it the support of the leading educators ; of the country. ! The General Conference already has taken action repudiating Dr. Butler and his wet statements, and i lias called on educators to lend their

support to the enforcement of the prohibition laws. The telegram of Mr. Crabtree is an indication that such support will be forthcoming. Mr. Crabtree's refutation of Dr. Butler brings, from another point of view, a further confirmation of the success of prohibition in the schools of the country as indicated in the survey just completed by The Christian Science Monitor.

LANGLEY IS STILL MEMBER OF HOUSE

Will Not Attend Sessions Until Appeal Is Decided He Is Seriously III

FORT DODGE, la.. May 17. This city of 30,000 population needs a thorough house cleaning. The Amer

ican citizens here should administer

it at the next election. Vice is rampant. It is so because

an indifferent police force dominates

the situation. Illicit liquor is sold

in a half dozen pool halls and socalled "soft- drink" parlors In the business district, without the least fear of arrest on the part of the violators. . Gambling houses are running "wide open" and not only the police, but everyone- in town knows It. There are three well-known gambling resorts In the business district. A case in which the Webster coun

ty unit of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan was involved came up Saturday. On information obtained from reliable sources, representa

tives of the Klart swore out a search

warrant for the premises of J. J. Nealis, station agent for the Minneapolis & St. Louis railroad at Gowrie. A quantity of liquor was

uncovered Monday in the- justice court at Gowrie. Nealis was assessed a fine of $125. It was two weeks ago that Gowrfe Klansmen burned a fiery cross and

"set off two aerial bombs. At that

time Nealis was greatly enraged and declared that if the local authorities did not take the Klansmen In hand and stop such proceedings in the future, he would appeal to the county and state authorities. On just what charge he would have the Gowrie Klansmen "taken in hand" he did . not make clear. However, it is understood that he has cooled

down considerably since his arrest

for liquor law violation. '

The trouble witn ort Dodge is

to be found in the fact that pol

iticians who play the game for all

there is in it are in plaees of power. Fifty per cent, of the population, or just a little less, are of the Roman Catholic faith. While the majority of county and city officials are Prot

estants, they jump when the Catholic machine pushes the button.

(Bureau Publication and Education) WASHINGTON, May 20. Representative John W. Langley, of Kentucky, convicted of violating the prohibition law in Kentucky, has notified Speaker Gillett that pending final action on his appeal of the case he would abstain from attendine

234-House sessions or -participating in

proceedings of the House public buildings committee, of w:hich he is

chairman. The committee authorized to investigate the charge made by a

Chicago grand jury in its report to the House said such an arrangement

was satisfactory and suggested that no further action be taken with the Langley case until the case has been

disposed of by the courts. The com mittp report was unanimous.

Representative Langley has been indicted, tried and convicted and

sentenced in the federal court for the Eastern district of Kentucky. He has appealed his case and the

House does not want to interfere or

pass judgment on the Kentuckian while his case is in the courts.

Representative Langley has returned to Washington from Kentucky and is seriously ill here as aresult of his worry over his recent conviction on a charge of improperly receiving money in connection with

liquor withdrawal permits. His doctor claims he has suffered a slight strake of apoplexy.

Ralph E. Updike, who has lust been nominated for Congress from the Seventh District in Indiana, had as hia opponent, Merrill Moores who -has served la Congress for the past ten years. Mr. Updike won a decisive, victory at the primaries held recently, after apparently having' beea beaten when the first returns came in. Mr. Updikei whom it la generally understood is a Klansman, served overseas during the World War

and was wounded five times. He is now a member of the Seventythird General Assembly, having been elected to the legislature la 1922. He is a member of many important committees in the legislature and is Chairman of Judiciary A. Mr. Updike was born In Brookville, Indiana, May 27, 1S94, and received his education in the public schools. He graduated from Indiana Law School in 1922. He married immediately upon his return -from the war and has two children. Mr. Updike, while Just entering his thirties, has made a most forceful start on what his

many friends predict to be a most brilliant career.

VIXCENNES, Ind., May 12. Knox county's Boys' Day parade is drawing no little amount of criticism as well as comment on its wonderful

success. Hundreds of boys from tha public schools marched in the pa

rade displaying American flags. Boys

from the Dunbar Colored School were well represented and outstripped all in the display of American, flags and warmth of patriotism. Many of the citizens are commenting on the fact that not one American flag was displayed by the boys from the Roman Catholic schoola.

nd little, if any, demonstration of

patriotism was made during the day by the Catholic children. It is real- ' ized that the boys can not be censored for lack of patriotism if it is not taught them. Many complaints have been mad by children attending the Hickman street public school, where it is said a Roman Catholic teacher is employed to instruct Protestant American children. Those, attending classes of this teacher have complained to their parents that their room is the only one in the entire building that does not display the American, flag and have the Bible

read at morning exercises.

The beating of two Klansmen In Cincinnati recently by members of the Knights of Columbus created a feeling the reverse front what the Romans hoped for. Protestants who had been passive, not believing that the hierarchy had a well-defined program for control of America, its churches and the government, have

awakened In many communities. The two Klansmen were kidnapped after attending a meeting near Cincinnati, taken into the country, stripped, beaten and loaded into an automobile, returned to Cincinnati and thrown from the machine in the streets in the center of the business district. The Cincinnati newspapers

ran pictures of the bared backs- of

the two Klansmen, showing th

gashes made by the leather whips

used. As an illustration of how the Roman Catholics view this incideat.'the following letter is reproduced. It was written by a Roman Catholic woman -and sent to The Fiery Cross. It spealss for itself:

"It is alright for Catholics to be intolerant toward Protestants because you are in error and the only way to teach you anything is to beat it into you. But Protestants have no right to be intolerant toward us because we alone hold the truth."

NEWPORT, Ky., May 17. Following a raid at 14 West Second street, Newport, Thursday night, a man registered as William J. Smith was arrested on a charge of manufacturing "moonshine" liquor. The raid was made by Chief of Police Lot G. Snyder, Captain Fred Knapp, Patrolmen Broadwell and Warrington, aided by two detectives employed by Newport ministers. The officers declare they found two 100gailon stills in operation, a large quantity of mash and two gallons

of "moonshine." During the raid Smith escaped, but was captured later by the

private detectives and was taken to i

the office of the Rev. J. Newton Cloe, pastor of the Central Christian church, in the Fennell building, Fourth, near York streets. He was later turned over to Patrolman Broadwell. The officers said they, destroyed the stills and mash and

other man escaped during the raid. The Rev. Cloe and the Rev. W. B.

pastor of Che Grace M. E. church, have been conducting a "clean-up-crusade in Newport. They will ptfisent their evidence to the June grand Jury. A man. registered as Jack Ricks,

TOKIO, May 19. A canvass of the steamship .offices shows at least. 5,000 Japanese aave booked passage and will sail to the United States before July 1, at which time the exclusion law is expected to go into effect. The -few hotels of Yokohama are crowded with Japanese residents of America temporarily in this country and anxious to return before July 1. (Bureau Publication and Education) WASHINGTON, May 20. Senator Oscar Underwood, of Alabama, wants the Democratic nomination for president this year. So does Governor Al Smith, of New York. It is common report that these two candidates and possibly 'others, will unite in their fight against the Ku Klux Klan and seek to make it a great issue in the New York convention the latter part of next month. These " candidates and possibly

ethera will Join in their demands for

an anti-Klan plank in the Democratic platform. If they do they will

be starting a fight that will end to disaster for themselves -and their

party before the election is over. Reaffirming his decision to fight

the Klan, Senator Underwood says:

"The Klan ia a secret organisation functioning in politics. In my judgment, no government can exist and be free that does its business behind closed doors. We can have only honest, pure and Just government when it is. conducted in the opes." If the Democratic party wants to

invite defeat six months in advanc of the election some of its leaders

are taking the proper course to ia Ban it getting what it is twekima.
