Elwell of Youngstown won a prize
of $20,000 for his suggestion of a
title and slogan for the weekly mag
azine, Liberty, published by the Chi
cago Tribune and the New York
Daily News. "Liberty, a weekly periodical for everyone," was the title and slogan of Elwell -which won the big prize. The new magazine, announcing that
he had won, appeared for the firs time Wednesday. In annexing the reward, Elwell father of four children, won over many distinguished contestants, among them a queen. Chicago dispatches disclosed that Queen Marie of Roumania was among the contenders, submitted a total of 1,395,322 suggestions. Sends 3,017 Suggestions Elwell, a commercial artist, writer
and inventor, sent 3,017 suggestions. Employed by the Arc Engraving Company here, Elwell declared on being notified he had won that he believed the award meant the "streak of hard luck" which had been pursuing him has been broken. Misfortune had followed Elwell in
a financial way tor years, ne said, and before Christmas his luck "hit bottom" in Minneapolis, where he had been without work lor three months. So the Elwells decided to pack the family in a flivver, motor eastward and start all over again.
It was Christmas night when they
left Minneapolis, and they arrived in Youngstown on New Year's day.
With a steady job in the engraving
plant the fortunes of the Elwells have been looking up and then came Wednesday's windfall. "We're going to buy a home and educate our children," Elwell said.

(Special to The Fiery Cross) CENTERVILLE, la.. May 10. The American citizens of Appanoose county are truly aroused for law enforcement following the attacks upon five girls by degenerate criminals in the past week. Saturday night at Cincinnati, Dorothy, the 12-year-old daughter of Rev. Harvey Batler, was accosted by a masked man as she was leaving the moving picture show. It is generally con
ceded that this assault was prompted by motives of revenge, for Rev. Mr. Butler for months past has been the leader of the law enforcement
element in Appanoose county. A reward of $200 has been placed in the hands of Mr. Butler by the Appanoose county unit of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan to be paid to the party or parties giving information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the degenerate. The same evening two girls were attacked at Centervflle. Sunday night
two girls were assaulted at Numa, a small community west of Centerville. Law enforcement In Appanoose county has been lax except for the activities of Rev. Mr. Butler and his squad of deputy sheriffs. Mine camps made up entirely of foreign-born citizens are found everywhere. It is in these Ncenters that disrespect for the law and vice flourishes. Recently, however, a law enforcement league was established, and
coupled with the Klan they are giv
ing every aid to the duly constituted officers of the law. Front now on a change of conditions may be expected.

CONSIDEB HISTORY Consider history. In all Europe Asia, and Africa, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there was
but one race that possessed sufficient
training and spiritual as well as phy
sical stamina to plunge into the wilderness of the new world and establish cities and homes. This race was the fruitage .of the long Aryan line the flower of the best the ages had given to the world. While the Jews followed with their usury and peddler's pack while the Spanish and French drank and adventured without true colonizing power the sturdy English and Scotch-Irish made their way under adverse conditions into the very heart of forest and wilderness. Every farm broken out of the woods by the strong arm of the .homemakers became a permanent foot
hold for the first Americans, and soon it sent its brood of sons and daughters to occupy new fertile lands. Thence sprang the progressive and mighty colonizing hosts o which our ancestors were a part thence, too, the mjghty tower-topping walls of onr new world industrial supremacy.

NEW YORK, May 10. Six men, arrested yesterday, were held by the
police as suspects in five daylight truck robberies, in which bandits obtained $126,000 in tobacco, silk, sugar and cotton goods. Harry Fuchs, 140 Norfolk street, and Thomas Gordon,
A milling firm of Harbin, Manchuria, has offered for sale in the
local market flour ground from imported American wheat. This wheat
was imported via Dairen and amounted to only a few carloads, as
the local miller wished to experi
ment first. However, as the grade of flour obtained from this wheat is
much cheaper and is superior to the local product, it is believed that the flour ground from American wheat will occupy first place In the local market in the future. This mill is also placing on the market a new
grade of flour in original American
packing.

A lew Boston people are getting awake to the fact that the foreignborn have added a load to the hospitals of Massachusetts. Statistics point out that during a considerable number of years the per cent of foreign-born living in Massachusetts has averaged approximately 45 and that of aliens 25. In a population of 19.199 in Massachusetts hospitals
on October 1, 1923, 45 per cent or 8,639, were foreign-born, and 25 per cent, or 4,800 were aliens. The cost of caring for the foreign-born, based on maintenance expenditures, for 1923 was approximately $2,977,119.40. and the cost of caring for the aliens was approximately $1,653,955.23. These figures make clear the fact that if the foreign-born population
could be removed from the Massachusetts institutions at least five
hospitals for defectives could be closed up permanently.
If aliens alone were removed.
three institutions could be closed
up. These data are offered by no less an authority than the lieutenantgovernor of Massachusetts, Alvan T. Fuller. Just how long the refuge
of the refugees will remain open to the weaklings of Europe is a-ques
tion to evoke the betting proclivities
of sporting gentlemen.
