Why the High Rents?
A Chicago citizen in a letter to the Chicago Tribune blames the rental agent or the real estate man for the high rent state of affairs. He says: ''I have read several articles in your paper in reference to the high cost of rents, and it seems to me that nobody has, as yet, given the proper reason. My opinion is that the cause lies with the unscrupulous real estate agent or agents. There are some who have not even secured their citizenship papers and quite a number who are illiterate. These agents sell a building to their customers with the advice that they can make $1,000 or so by raising the rents and disposing of the building to some one else. When Mr. Some-IkxI-Klse buys the building he, too. is told that he can make-a big profit by raising the rent and selling to another, and so on down the line. Right here in my neighborhood there is a twelve flat building which baa changed ownership at least five times during the last four years, and every lime the tenants' rents were raised, so that those who are still there and paid 2fi about five years ago are now paying $65. This answers Hip question, 'What causes the high rents?' " e HaulAnythinrf" WSFRYl TRANSFER 1 ;";"':r:in:;:: Main 3535 27 South Alabama St.

' Address Box 98, Cumberland, Ind. 11 LUDINGT0N BEGINS TO SHOW KLANRRAFT Enthusiastic Seekers Fill Big Auditorium and Hear Stirring Address LUDINGTON', Mich., April 5. The spirit of Klandom is beginning to show itself in large numbers here, and. many meetings are being held by Klansmen of Ludington and surrounding community. One of the largest meetings held recently took place Thursday night at the I. O. O. F. hall, and the big auditorium was packed to its capacity. -A prominent speaker gave a stir ring address on the principles of the order, and was received with great enthusiasm by the crowd. The meeting was open to all, and there were a number of citizens w ho came to get the message first hand. Many of them had heard various things about the great organization and were much gratified to learn that what the subsidized newspapers were saying about the Protestant Americans was very much exagge rated. Little by little the light is beginning to dawn on the skeptical that many of these papers are Roman Catholic controlled and nat urally are against anything pertaining to the massing ot Protestants. The plafn truths uttered by the speaker were received with applause by the audience and it was plain that the vast majority was in. accord with the cause. Among the audience were a few ot the Catholic faith, together with a scattering of other foreigners, and tt was understood that they had come for the sole purpose of, breaking, up the meeting. The enthusiasm of the big audi ence as a whole, however, evidently pat a damper on the plana of the enemy as there was no disturbance. Carolina Governor Weds Widow of a Millionaire DURHAM, N. JOPLIN, Mo. From, a mass of truth and falsehood the better citi zens of this city selected the truth and placed in office representative Americans, supported by Klansmen, at the recent municipal election. The entire good citizens ticket was swept into office by substantial ma jorities. The victory was significant because of the large foreign popu lation. The casting of ballos was preceded by a deluge of advertise ments published by the antl-Klan organization, which not only con tained statements that were mis leading but falsehoods about the great American organization, according to local Klansmen. OSAGE CITY, Kas. With the swearing in Tuesday of the four new councilmen, recently elected through the support of Klansmen and their friends, residents of this place are expecting an efficient administration during the ensuing term. The vic tories were decisive, the majorities ranging from ratios of two to one to three to one, according to figures compiled by the Osage City Free Press. PITTSBURG, Kas. In spite of the oft-told story that the Klan is opposed to the negro, and the antiKlan propaganda carried on by the local Roman . Catholic-controlled press, the thinking men and women among the negroes of this commu nity are convinced . that their best friends are to be: found among Klansmen. They realized that the overtures made them by politicians and Catholic henchmen are merely for votes. Unrestricted immigration, they believe, means more competition in the labor market for the negro workmen. NEWPORT, Ky.-r-Campbell county Klansmen held a special Klonklave here Saturday night against the orders of Commissioner Joseph Herman, who said that as long as he is commissioner the Ku Klux Klan wilr not be permitted to do anything in the city of Newport. The Klavern was so crowded that no standing room was available.' A national representative from the Imperial Wizard in Atlanta was present and pre sented the Klan with a new charter. He delivered one of the best speeches heard in this community. Every Klansman present was greatly inspired by the spirit of co-operation among Klansmen. A royal feed was served after the meeting and an hour of entertainment was enjoyed by all. C 0 V I N G T O N, Ky. Klansmen numbering 1,250 held a meeting in the Latonia Baptist church Thursday Htright and heard a famous lecturer from the Cincinnati Bible Institute speak on the principles of the Ku Klux Klau and its activities throughout the United States. Applause was so great at times that people in the neighborhood were aroused and telephone calls were numerous requesting information about the meeting. More than 200 applications were received for membership into the organization. Scores are being initiated each week and the Kenton county Klan is growing by leaps and bounds. The quota will be reached early in the summer. SALINA. Kas. The preaching of Klan principles was the outstanding feature of a series of evangelistic services conducted recently by a prominent Kansas minister at the First United Brethren church. The minister made a plea for citizens to work for the salvation of the connry and church and for a better manhood and purer womanhood. Because of the large attendance many were turned away from the services. At a special women's meeting many in the andience made application for membership in the Women of the Ku Klux Klan. At the final service a group of Klansmen enterwl the church and presented $100 to the preacher to assist him in his work. The minister led the Klansmen in prayer. PITTSBURG, Kas. Protestants, of this community are aroused as never before over an- editorial appearing recently: in the Mulberry (Kas,) News, an anti-Klan publication, evi dently written with the idea of inciting riot. That it did not result in the death of some of the promi nent Protestants probably is due to the fact that the handbills to offset the News' rabid doctrine were circulated in and around Mulberry by the law-abiding and peace-loving Klans men. Following is an excerpt from the News' editorial: ' . nothing on earth will kill the Kluckers as quickly. The plan is all right, but a whole lot of time can be saved by killing them instanter." For the last year the Mulberry News has been the official organ of the Loyal Constitutionalists, an organization opposed to the Klan. Attempts have been made to establish chapters in other Kansas towns but so far as is known resulted in fail ure. SAN BERNARDINO, Cal. San Bernardino Klansmen are going to put on an initiation for tho public on April 26. They will be able to ac commodate about 2,000 aliens, and as usual will initiate a very large clasa. OJtTARIO, Cal. Ontario is progressing very nicely. The San Bernardino Klan officers conducted seventy-one aliens through the Mystic Cave Monday, March 24. Had a wonderful attendance from surrounding territory. May -expect wonders from now on from Ontario Klan. LE. ROY, Kas. Two hundred persona were fn attendance at a baiv(?Betgivea here Monday evening to Knights and officials from neighboring town by the loeal Klaus oven. Interesting talks were given ana much enthusiasm wss displayed.
WHITE CITY, Kas. Despite the
handicap of bad roads, which were almost impassable, members of the local Klan held a highly-successful meeting in the city hall recently, which was well attended. A minister was the speaker. It was the first open meeting here. - EMPORIA, Kas. Throughout Lyon county the true patriots are rallying to the cause of the fiery cross and a spirit of unselfish devotion to the principles is exemplified on every hand. The various Klans in Lyon county are entering upon a program of united effort in a very enthusiastic manner, which will benefit Protestant Christianity and make Protestant people of this country realize more fully their duty to their churches and the responsibility of a great democracy. BELLEVUE. Ky. Women of the Ku Klux Klan in Campbell county gathered in the Christian church in Bellevue Friday night and heard a former priest, W. C. Tanner of Cincinnati, and Fort Wayne, Ind., expose the Roman Catholic church and the confessional. Eight hundred women were present and many were turned away for lack of room. Tanner is arousing the. people in northern Kentucky and many Catholics are denouncing their chnrch. . The women of Campbell county Klan are doing great work in and I around Newport and can always be depended on to do. their share of charity work. EDGERTON, Kas. All ages were represented in a large class of candidates initiated by the local Klan at a recent meeting. The oldest candidate, a civil war veteran, was eighty-three years old, and the youngest was eighteen. CALDWELL, Kas. With a wife and six children to support on a ten-acre tract near here, Adam Rohrer had a difficult time supporting his family. The battle was discouraging. He lost an arm in a buzz saw and the future became blacker. However, he had not counted on his neighbors and the Ku Klux Klan. They presented him with more than S00. Klansmen contributed 5174 to the amount. The Klan recently presented $10 to an aged negro minister for temporary relief. He had been retired by his congregation because of his age. WICHITA. Kas. After attempting to suppress the news of a liquor raid at the home of E. V. Schnoor, local tobacco jobber, recently, the newspapers made it appear that Sheriff Chet Conner made the raid as a preelection campaign. Schnoor was arraigned and released on $6,000 bond. LITTLE ROJIE AROUSED : I-OOGOOTFE, Ind. April 5 An explosion which fairly, "shook the town aroused little Rome Tuesday night. The blast was followed by the flames that outlined a beautiful fiery cross, and practically everyone in the town watched the flames shoot into the sky. It was another notice to the representatives of the Vatican that the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan are busy and growing in this cbmm unity. Indeed, the Klan movement is growing here.
