MOVIE PROPAGANDA PALLS ON THE PUBLIC i Priests, Nuns, Beads, Images, Hospitals Paraded Almost Incessantly by Rome (Bureau Publication and Education) WASHINGTON, March 22. Have you ever sat in the movies and thought anything about the amount of propaganda going on there on the screen? How many Protestant ministers have you seen taking the roles of the clergy? Has' it ever occurred to you that you nearly always find a Roman Catholic priest on the job? And then the less noted characters, for instance the common people, in the attitude of prayer? Have you noted how many cross themselves and bow to the shrines and in some instances images? Has it ever struck you as peculiar that al ways it is the foreign church, thp foreign idea of religion, the priests, nuns, and their work that is being displayed on the screen before the public? Americans are sick of this sort of propaganda and they are hungering for pictures that picture Americans and American sentiment on the screen in preference to the foreign ideas that seem to be constantly exploited. Don't think for a moment that this is just a "happen so," for it is a willful, deliberate, cunning, piece of propaganda that is going on dailv. This stuff is being fed nightly to your children and our children as well as to adults. Why? It makes an impression on youngsters of the impressionable age and adults swallow it without thinking of what is going on. A relative of the writer often asks the question: "Oh, when will the sleepy Protestants wake up to what is going on?" And she is about right. When are we going to sit up and take notice, rub our eyes and get wide awake to the amount of propaganda taking place before our veryeyes. If the Americans can ever get awake to the situation we will be all right, but it takes a long time to arouse public sentiment to the boiling point. Why not open your eyes and take steps to right such conditions before it requires force to overcome the wrongs done an outraged public? And then take another look at who is running the movies? You don't need to go away from home; just look at the men in the business in your home town. Personally they may be good Americans and can't help themselves, but just ask them where they are compelled to buy their pictures and whom they are forced to patronize. CHURCHES OF MARTIN TMNTTGREEl'lLAN LOOGOOTEE, Ind., March 22. Martin County Unit, No. 54, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, has not let bad weather interfere with the work in thrs community. JEWS ARE OPPOSED TO INTERMARRIAGE ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS Rabbi Krass in Public Address Admits It Racial Side Overlooked He Goes to the Bible to ProTe It, But He Also Finds There Many Cases of Intermarriage (Bureau Publication and Education) WASHINGTON, March 20. Jews are opposed to intermarriage on religious and not on racial grounds, said Rabbi Nathan Krass at Temple cmanuei, iew om city, in his recent sermon . on "Intermarriage." Dr. Krass advises Jews to wed Jews and says the chances of hanninpss are dubious when parties are not of the same religious faith. At the best he declares that marriage is a lottery and he advises against intermarriage with Christians. Beginning his sermon Dr. Krass pointed out that the question of intermarriage was almost as old as humanity and that among the very ancient peoples laws against marrying out of the tribe or other ethnic division were current. "But strange as it may seem, these prohibitions were not due to racial reasons," he said. "The chief reason for putting an embargo on intermarriage was religious. Among the ancient Jews, according to the Biblical record, we find prohibition against intermarriage, particularly with seven nations that are mentioned by name. The reason assigned for this prohibition in the Bible is not racial inferiority but religious inferiority. These seven nations were idolatrous Therefore, the Jews could not countenance exogamous marriage lest the idolatrous practices of the pagans adulterate Judaism. Cases of Intermarriage "On the other hand, it is quite illuminating to note that a number of Biblical heroes married non-Jews. Joseph married an Egyptian-. Moses married a Cushite. Judah married a Canaanite. Samson married a Phil istine. Another Jew of humbler origin married a Mnahitp woman who has attained great fame, namely, Ruth. "From the Book of .back to the fifth century before the Christian era, we learn that inter--marriages were numerous among the Jews so that Ezra had to resort to drastic measin . - wlu n he re-established the Jewioii community by forcing all who married outside the faith to put away tiieir strange wives. "All through the ages Jews have married outside of Judaism and were thus lost to Israel and the faith cti'I non-Jews married into Judaism and thus were added to and absorbed by Israel. .AH these historical facts prove conclusively that mere was never among the Jews any objection to intermarriage merely on racial grounds. The chief reason among the Jews as among the Catholics, for example, used against intermarriage, was religious. The admixture of alien elements always tends to weaken the faith. "Our Own Religion'' "The attitude of the Jew today is still the same. We are opposed to intermarriage because we believe in our own religious mission and we feel that whatever tends to weaken that mission ought not to be encouraged. By intermarriage we understand the union of two persons of different faiths who after marriage still cling to their respective religions. . -Marriage is indeed a lottery and persons of similar tastes, habits, customs and outlook upon life are likely to be better mated than those whose origins and outlooks are different. Those who view life eye to eye are more likely to walk in harmony than those who strive to go in opposite directions. "For persons hailing from different religions to marry is indeed taking a dubious step. The conflicts and clashes in the home, particularly when children are to be reared, are indicative of disaster, not of happiness. The Jews are a minority people in America. 3.000.000 out of nn. 000,000. The minority is always in danger of being absorbed through 1 dan&er of DeinS absorbed through ! !nt?rmarnage by the majority, and I if intermarriage increased, Jews as jews wouia aiminisn. Dr. Krass then winds up his sermon bv declarinc that the lihoroi Jew of today has much in common with the liberal Christian, but not enough to overcome that psychic heritage which each possesses. He also saysb welcomes proselytes, but he wants the proselyting done among the Christians and not among the Jews. It is anything to break down the Christian religion in this country. The same thing is true of the Roman Catholics all over the country. They want to gain the Christians, but don't want to lose any of their own faith. MILLIONAIRE IS HEADOFCHICAGO BREWING GANG

PIAXO MANUFACTURER INDICTED AS DIRECTOR OF AN ILLICIT BEER INDUSTRY Sixteen of the Most Active Breweries Closed and Bielfeldt Company Officers Are Held CHICAGO, March 22. Indictment of Henry Detmer, millionaire Chicago piano manufacturer, as the directing business genius of the illicit beer industry; the closing of sixteen of the most active breweries in the Chicago district, and the backing Brice Armstrong, chief beer sleuth, has obtained for his views against the brew, were given as reasons for complete reassignment of prohibition enforcement agents to combat the raw alcohol traffic that has developed overnight as an almost complete substitute for the "beer racket." In announcing changes in his plan of action, Charles W. Vursall, chief enforcement officer for Illinois, would not credit any of the wellknown beer runners with a decision to reform. Record Big Increase "Within a week the illegal alcohol business in Chicago has increased several hundred per cent," Mr. Vursall said. "All but three of my agents who were assigned to beer squads have been transferred to alcohol. "More than $100,000 worth of illicit spirits are coming into Chicago each day, I have been informed. AVe find that the cars are consigned as different kinds of merchandise, just as whisky used to be when owners were wming to taKe a cnance. i "Huge 'cooking plants' have been j hastily put into action, capable of j handling 2,500 gallons and upward j each day. In these plants denatured j alcohol is beins redistilled on a. soalp ' -fnever before approached in Chicago. Hut it won t last long. The same men who have made beer making an unprofitable enterprise in the last six weeks are now alert to knock out the 'alcohol epidemic' " Watch for Print Forgeries Mr. Vursall said that simultaneously with the jump in alcohol, printing plants suspected of specializing in whisky and gin label manufacture have been placed under rigid scrutiny. The increase in alcohol shipments also has stimulated sale of essences and prepared combinations of creme de cocoa, creme de menthe, apricot syrup, arak, rockee, annisette and i other favorite ingredients of the syn-i-iicuv. uuuic lauiiiv, iii . v ursail aaiu Detmer. latest of the alles-eil heer kings to get into trouble with the beer campaigners, was indicted as a result of a raid led ten days ago by Brice Armstrong, when ten trucks were seized as they were about to pull away from the Bielfeldt brewerv in Thornton. Detmer, who is head of the Henry Detmer Piano Manufacturing Company, of Chicago, also is president of the Bielfeldt company of Thornton. Others Are Indicted With him were indicted Edward Graf, vice-president of the brewing company; Conrad Biehls, secretary and treasurer; George Wes.tfall, general manager, and William Lecher, brewTmaster. The government asked injunctions against places of business of eleven men, one in Aurora, five in Chicago Heights and five in Joliet. In the Joliet group was "The Court," for many years a rendezvous for politicians and other individuals well-known throughout Illinois. CROSS IS BURNED AS REVIVAL CLOSES GREENSBURG, Ind., March 21 As the audience filed out of the Union Baptist church here last Friday evenine at thp trlnsp nf a snnrpssfnl re vival a fiery cross burst into flames I in iront or. tne cnurcn. Tne auaience Btopped and an address was made by a Klansman. At the close of the address a collection was taken among the Klansmen and a neat sum of money was realized and turned over to the Rev. C. B. Atkinson, of Letts, who conducted the revival. A letter accompanied the presentation of the money. The letter closed with an expression of brotherly love for the minister and a plea that "America be kept for Americans." THE IRISH FLAG ABOYE The Irish flag was floating wildly in the March breeze in Indianapolis Monday. The occasion was the Roman Catholic celebration in honor of St. Patrick. No American will object to the Irish flag floating in an Irish parade so long as the Irish flag does not interfere or float above the American flag. Americans have a just right to object when this is done. Therefore, Americans have a right to enter a protest here and now because this thing did "happen" Mondays. We do not know how often, but in two cases we have the license numbers of the automobiles that carried the Irish flag above the American flag. Here are their numbers: M 1018, registered In the name of the Oakland Motor Car Company! 478-153, registered in. the name of James M. Sweeney, 1629 Lexington avenue. --
