The Jay county Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, with headquarters here, are marching rapidly forward. The organization has been assisting many needy families here and in other communities of the county this winter. The meeting Monday night was largely attended and the enthusiasm ehown was proof that the members are alive and active. The members are taking unusual Interest and working as a unit. The enemy's propaganda is disurblng no one here. New applications are being received at every meeting, and the membership is becoming better Informed each month as to the principles the Klan stands for. A large collection of groceries was brought to headquarters at the last meeting and the food was carefully distributed to a list of needy families. The much-discussed and bitterly fought anti-Klan ordinance, which .would have prevented Klansmen attending funerals or parading in resalla, finally has been put to death. The city council had a long siege with this ordinance, but the mayor stood steadfast for equality of all, and the ordinance has been sent to the scrapheap. GET SERIOUS JOLT Machine Is Surprised When Dark Horse Candidates Win School Nominations DAVENPORT, la., March 10. Machine politicians of Davenport wero surprised last week when two darkhorse candidates walked away with the non-partisan school nomination for members of the board of education. Immediately the cry went up "the Klan is to blame." On the contrary, the machine politicians and their hand-picked candidates are themselves to blame for this spontaneous act on the part of the Davenport voters. Not until the ward caucuses were held early In the week was there any Indication that Clyde C. Mlnard, a former high school principal, and Frank Goddard, a local business man, were In any way contemplating obtaining places on the school board. At the city-wide convention they were put over by a large majority. Harry Downer and Mrs. Hilda M. Matthey, members of the school board, said to be candidates of the machine, are running against the newly nominated candidates on an independent ticket. Political observers in Davenport are of the opinion that the convention's candidates will be successful in the election. EXCOURAGING THE IRISH Edward L. Doheny, a Roman Catholic, Democratic leader in California, until ousted from the state committee following his connection with the Teapot Dome oil scandal, and Albert B. Fall, is venting his spite on hla former Democratic friends in California between interviews and appearances as a witness in the Washington scandal. His latest outbreak, as carried in the daily newspapers, quotes him as follows: "My activities In connection with the Democratic party in California were centered at the last convention on advocacy of protection of American citizens and rights in foreign countries, especially Mexico, and of an expression of encouragement and approval for the aspirations of the Irish people." "It will be interesting to learn," he said, "if those now reported to be opposed to me in California are actuated by hostility to the principles I advocated at that time." e sn p uw jci mwv .: $ 7.50 per 100 $11.00 per m.oo per 100 100 Sliade Trees of All Kinds. Perhaps it might be well for both sides to have a hearing, i have been Investigating the Ku Klux Klan for some time and have arrived at some conclusions which are very favorable to that order. Among its self-expressed aims and purposes I find it to be a patristic, benevolent, fraternal order, seeking:

J-io inculcate a purer patriotism in us members; to uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States and the tparate states thereof; maintain, perfect and perpetuate our free public school system and to preserve the United tSates as a Protestant Christian nation. In order to enter the Ku Klux Klan you must have been born In the United States, of white parentage, "be over 18 years of age and of the Protestant Christian faith. Christian Ideals They are set forth as follows: 1. We magnify the Bible, as the basis of the constitution, the foundation of our government, the source of our laws, the sheet-anchor of our liberties, the most practical guide of right living, and the source of all true wisdom. 2. We teach the worship of God. For we have in mind the divine command, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God." 3. We honor the Christ, as the Klansman's only criterion of character. And we see at His hands that cleansing from sin and impurity, which He only can give. 4. We believe that the highest expression of life is in service and in sacrifice for that which is right; that selfishness can have no part in a true Klansman's life and character; but that he must be moved by unselfish motives such as characterized our Lord the Christ and moved Him. Patriotism and Christianity are pre-eminently the moving principles of the Ku Klux Klan. The flag, the constitution and the Holy Bible are the keystone of Klan principles. An Ally of the Church Well, it seems to mp. that if rmm high and noble ideals have anytnmg to do with the foundation of the highest tvDe of charartpr. nnrl they certainly do, then the members ot tne Klan ought to be the very finest of men. But it is not intended, or claimed, that the Klan shall take the. nlnne of the church. It is intended, how ever, that the Klan shall he a-nA t is, the most Dowerfiil allv nt the Protestant church. No man can be a good Klansman and nnt ho a hot ter citizen and a more consistent Christian by the experience. The Klan's foundation Drincinlei llie'lUsrtl-", UUUUkUi! Lll W,l IIIHM. ner of mobs and to mob violence of every form. It stands emphatically for law and order, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of conscience, for the free public school, separation of church and state, white supremacy and Protestant Christianity. It is the 6worn duty of every Klansman to uphold the law and assist the regularly constituted authorities, at all times, in the discharge of their legal duties. Hot an "Anti" Order mhe Klansmen contend that the Protestant Christian citizens of this country have as much right to organize an all-Protestant society as the Roman Catholics and Jews have to organize their all-Catholic and all-Jewish societies. The Klan is not "against" the Catholic or "against" the Jews, but "for" Protestant Christianity. The Roman Catholic excludes himself from membership in the Klan by owing first allegiance to a foreign power. In case of a conflict between the authority of the United States government and the pope at Rome a good Ctaholic must always obey the pope. That is a well-known fact. That may have very far reaching results. Klansmen contend that no person owing first allegiance to any foreigner, foreign government, person, prince, potentate, ecclesiastical or otherwise, can be a true American, and are, therefore not eligible for membership in this organization. It is also a well-known fact that it is the great ambition of the pope and the Catholic church to make the United States Catholic. I do not criticise them for that. From their point of view that is a laudable ambition. If I were a Catholic that would be my ambition. The Klan, however, is organized to prevent that ambition from being realized. Jews Exclude Themselves The Jew excludes himself from the Klan by refusing, to accept the Christian religion. Doubtless many Christian Jews are members of the Klan, and they will make fine Klansmen, because of being what they are. The Jews are very clannish, made so by the command of God Himself. If they had not been clannish and a separate people they would be unknown to history today. God bless the Jew. The Klan will lose nothing following his examples of clannishness. The Klan is in jiolltics to the extent that it votes its convictions tit the ballot box. There is nothing secret about the political part of the Klan. The political function of the Klan and its great power along that line are well-known facts all over the United States. That is the only way that the Klan can purify politics and secure the adoption of its principles. Independent Yoters The Klan Is composed of independent voters, free from party slavery. They select the best men

available and concentrate their votes on them. The Klan votes as It prays. In that it differs from cburch members. They pray all right and go to the polls and give the lie to their prayers. They pray all right and then go to the polls and vote for the devil, horns, tail and all, if he is nominated by their political party. That is partisan politics which has been a great curse to this country and to the world. Partisan politics defeated the League ot Nations. Thank God, we at last have a great organization that is free from the party whip and will vote for MEN regardless or party affiliation. In one sense the Catholic church is a powerful, political machine, seeking to make the pope, through the ballot box, the political and temporal ruler of the world. Catholics vote for Catholics regardless of party name. That i3 their right and privilege. If Governor Smith, of New York, was nominated for president every Catholic in the United States would vote for him. Uniting the Protestants If the Protestants were united as the Catholics are they would have the power always to elect their own choice and carry through every needed reform. The time will come when the Protestants will be so united. In the meantime here comes the Klan to unite the Protestants and to do the work the Protestant church should do. Score a point for the Klan. The adherents to the Protestant faith constitute a large amjority of the population of our country. The majority should rule. No one can object to that. And the Klan is doing more today to bring about the organic union of all the Protestant churches than any other agency. Score another point for the Klan. The Klan is also doing more today to preserve and perpetuate our free public school svstem than nv nthororganization. The Klan and the Masons join hands in that great work. Score another point for the Klan. Bibles In the Schools The Klan is also doing more today to restore the Bible to our public schools than all other organizations combined. Score another point for the Klan. In accordance with its well-known principles the Klan is now enlisting its great power for the enforcement of the eighteenth amendment tn tho constitution and the prohibition law. inai law will no longer be, a deadletter wherever a Klan is organized. The Klan. has also undertaken a great reform movement in the southern states that no more mulatto children shall be horn mothers. That condition has been a sname and disgrace to the white "Vor tne south. These men are Wbeint 'Uifeu 4 -Ml! Klan that they mHst respect the virtue of the negro women as highly as they the virtue of the white women.

The Immigration Peril By A. L. W.

The great masses of American people are at last coming to realize that if this nation is to survive, our shores can not continue to be the dumping ground for multitudes of aliens who have little or no sympathy with its institutions, government and religious sentiments. This country has been called a great melting pot; and the American people have taken pride in this term, but as time has gone on they have learned that in many sections it is not so much a melting pot as it is a cesspool for the hordes from across the water who are not only un-American, but radically anti-American. (This term cesspool has actually been used by at least one magazine writer in discussing immigration.) So widespread is this sentiment against allowing the continuance of the stream of undesirable aliens to pour into this country, that, it is claimed, if a bill to close the gates entirely against immigrants were introduced into Congress, it would probably pass, four to one. The present measure, passed the Senate, sixty to two; and these two no doubt were senators under the dominion of a foreign ruler. Curran Hits Straight A New York City daily reports a speech by Henry H. Curran, commissioner of immigration at Ellis Island, delivered in New York City. He warns the nation that aliens must be curbed or America will find herself in great peril. "The present flood threatens to divide the country," he said. "This country today is dangerously near being discordant, disunited and- divided against itself." And he asked his hearers to support the proposed quota law, which will allow only 2

per cent instead of 3 per cent anajB

win Dase its ngures on the 1890 census instead of the 1910: "Our gates have stood open to the immigrants of the world for many years. Now I think it is time we close them a bit. We have too much in this country of foreign colonies, foreign points of view, foreign loves and foreign hates inherited from the history ot other continents. No nation can bear its part effectively in the future of the world if it be discordant, disunited, divided against itself within its own borders. We are dangerously near that today." The commissioner told of a congressman who telegraphed him asking for the admission of a certain Greek, saying that 8,000 Greek votes in his city depended on the admission of the immigrant In question. He added, "Just what is a Greek vote in America? What business has it to be here?" Hospitality Abased Jews and Catholics have taken ad

Score another big point for the Klan. Elan Makes Mistakes But in saying all that I have on behalf of the Klan, I do not say that ttejdaa has no bad men in it, or that it never makes mistakes. All human organizations have bad men in them. There are bad men in the church. There was a Judas among the twelve. But this well-known fact Is no argument in itself against any organization. Note this fact, however, that when it is known that a bad man is in the Klan, his name is dropped from the membership. A bad man in the church is not dropped from the membership rolls, unless he is notoriously bad. And a man can not be admitted to the Klan unless he is vouched for by a man of wellknown Christian character. A man goes into the churcbroh. his own application and without a voucher. So it seems the Klan is more particular about its membership than the church is about its membership. Score another point for the Klan. Many Investigations have been aimed at the Klan, but they all drop out of sight very suddenly and you never hear of them again. An investigation was started in Congress, and that was to be the end of the Klan. But when it was discovered that the president of the United States and many senators and congressmen were members of the Klan, the investigation collapsed very suddenly with no one to give it decent burial. President Harding was a second degree member of the Klan. In it are also leading senators and congressmen, governors of states, judges of courts, district attorneys, leading lawyers and doctors, leading ministers of the eosnel. collet

professors, prominent business men, ana a multitude or patriotic citizens. Now, then, is it reasonable to suppose that these men. eminent for intelligence and patriotism, would have gone into the Klan without a ttiorougn. investigation as to its principles and purposes, and without being thoroughly satisfied that the Klan met a ereat. need of the present times? Most certainly not. ioaay a most Ditter war is being waged against the Klan by all the bootleggers, law-breakers, murderers, robbers, thugs, dope peddlers, libertines, prostitutes and blackleg gamblers, and all the forces of thp underworld. The fact that all the forces of the underworld are arrayed against the Klan in a rtpath struggle is the very best endorse ment tne Klan can nave, with whom are you going to line up? With the underworld with its flenrtly menace to our Christian civiliza tion, or witn tne Klan wnich stands for the verv best that nan he found in our Christian citizenship? l am not a member of the Klan. I speak from the outside, but I am free to confess that I would like to

d4belong to it, and helD carry forward

its magnificent program. vantage of American hospitality to fight bitterly against the reading of the Bible in the public schools of the land, claiming to do so is sectarian and detrimental to their own interests. As a writer in World's Work points out, the Bible is as much a charter of our liberties as is the Declaration of Independence. These aliens know our history or should know it. They knew it before they landed at Elli3 Island. They were aware of the fact that the fathers came here to get away from Romish despotism. Yet they invade our national home, partake of our hospitality, and then proceed to destroy our institutions. Their purpose is to sweep away the principles on which the country was founded and transform it into a European wilderness, where their own de Draved instincts and passions wil find greater opportunity for, gratification. Ot course they hate the Bible. Jesus declared that every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. Of course its doctrines are contrary to their paganism ; and their warfare against the Scriptures is Infallible proo that they are not fit persons to be allowed in our land, Why is it that these hordes who are so determined to live on a low plane wish to visit these shores at all? Why do they to live on a low plane wish to visit these shores at all? Why do they not go to Siberia or Central Africa, and thus get as far away from the Bible and civilization as possible? America Mnst Awake These aliens nnt onlv ntiAi ibleS OUt Of hotels. IHpV thPTTl nnt of public schools, and even burn them, when opportunity affords, but they break our Sabbath, commercialize our womanhood, despise our institutions and seek to overthrow our government. It is high time that the American people rise in their wrath and pitch out all the invaders who do not intend to abide by our laws. Many department atnroa ara ak. erated by those who are un-American at neart. According to Investigators it has been found that the wages were so low that many girls were led into temptation and ruin. And how terrible is the stream of pollution from the movie world, with its aliens in charge! America can not long exist as a land worthy of honor and respect If it does not adopt stringent measures to stop this flood of undesirable immigration, and to curb the activities ot those already here who are doing all iff their power to destroy our institutions.

SHOWS ITS ACTIVITY Meetings Largely AttendedJuniors Busy at Winslow , Money for Revivalist PETERSBURG, Ind., March 8. The meetings of the Klan. units in Pike county of late have been inspirational and largely attended. At Winslow Thursday night there was an unusual gathering of the best men of the county. Two splendid talks were given by ministers of the gospel. The importance of law enforcement and improved moral conditions was stressed by each speaker. The conscience of the people is to be aroused in this part of the country. The Klan is the only militant organization against crime and lawlessness in the country at this particular time. There are many whose leaning is toward law enforcement but their actions belie their secret inclinations. At Littles, a mining town five miles south of here, one evening last week as the. church bell rang for services at a series Df revival meetings being held, about forty Klansmen entered the church and presented the evangelist a purse of money, and without a spoken word mysteriously disappeared. The Littles community is feeling the uplifting influence for good that the Klan is bringing to it. Friday evening at Winslow the Junior Klan burned thA fi rat Tnnin. Klan cross for Pike county.
