JfiTmsr Mummy Case; Like Golden Idol, in Coffin

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS

An American correspondent, one of riglit in proclaiming the discovery the first portions admitted to the i the greatest in the history of Eeypt-

to'iib ft Kin? Tutankhamen, when it was uncovered by the Carter party

workiuK for many mpnths in open

ology, even, as many claim, in all

archaeology.

It was in the presence of a gath-

ing the tomb, has sent the following !ering representing the elite of Egypt

story to the United States

At the first view of ttiw niciaiiificont golden coffin, with Uie face, shoulders, breast and arms of the Pharaoh standing out in boldest relief on the metal. 0he. realized that this discovery was indeed an event in the annals of Egyptology. Nothing l;as ever been found in K?ypt before resembling this colossus of gold with its strangely

natural, oddly captivating face and supreme dignity of line. The only parallel one can call to mind is the great stone effigy carved on the lid of the sarcophagus of Merenptah, the reputed Pharaoh of the Exodus. The sight ot the sheets of gold gloaming on the mummy case of

Tutankhamen tells its own tale of the reward that awaited the enterprise of the ancient tomb robbers aiuL-i'eadil.v explains why, of all the sepulchres of Egypt's old rulers, only Tutankhamen's has been inviolate. Like a (irent (Jolilen Idol When the correspondent entered the tomb he found a sheet of glass laid across the open sarcophagus beneath the cracked gran'te lid which hung from its tackle some three feet above. The first sight of the dead King's etligy was overwhelming. It might have been a huge golden idol. An incredibly bizarre effect was lent by the solid, folded head dress, the long curved golden beard, the thick

ness of a ship's cable and the gigan--tic Hail anil crook grasped in the great hands. One felt that the scientists were

ology that the lid of the great pink sarcophagus was raised, and the stupendously magnificent mummy case, covered with, plates of solid gold, was brought to light. The Great Dramatic Moment The moment was the most dramatic in the history of the dramatic discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. By general consent of those present the mummy-form case immeasurably

surpasses in splendor and beauty even the previous magnificent treas

ures the excavators in this tomb have brought to light.

The mummy case is perfectly in-j tact. The Pharaoh is represented i in high relief, more' than twice life I

size, all covered in sheet gold, his j serene and beautiful face exquisitely ! incisedwith glittering eyes of Aragonite and a long upcurved beard ofj solid gold. The flail and sceptre which the: king grasps in his crossed hands are gilded wood more than three feet j long. From the waist clown the j broad wings of protective goddesses meet across the knees to shield the Pharaoh from danger. When the lid was raised the mummy case was found to be covered with three thicknesses of linen, browned with age. This linen, when rolled up, disclosed to the bewildered eyes of the excavators, as one of those present said, "a gleaming, golden man." The mummy case stands in a coffin on what seems to

be a wooden sleigh on which doubtless priests dragged it to the Valley of the Kings.

Senator LaFollette. of Wisconsin, j in .ne tw Parties has been busy

has bee n in t lie Senate a long time and he always has been an insurgent, always off the Republican reservation. He thinks no more of attacking the Republican party than he does the' Democratic party. In fact, most of his attacks have been made on the party that claims to elect him from time to time. Serfhtor Hifam lolrnsoTi. Ot California, is another senator who strays away from the Republican reservation whenever he feels like it. He, too, does not hesitate to attack the Republican party whenever he feels In the mood. Then there is Senator Brookhart, of Iowa, a newcomer, a radical. Senators Frazicr and Ladd. of North Dakota, line up with the same bunch. Miunf".ln's Aetlon '

.Minnesota last year elected two Furiner-Laborites and turned down both old political parties. Senators Magnus Johnson and Shipstcad,

nearly always line up with the Republican insurgents or the Democrats to help defeat the Republicans. Senator Borah, of Idaho, is off the Republican reservation most of the time. Senator Norris, of Nebraska, Is also most independent in his thought and action. He fights the administration in the Senate about as much as he fought Uncle Joe Cannon in the House when the latter was speaker. Senator Norris has ben Joined by another independent in Senator Howell, of the same state, this year. However, the new senator from Nebraska Is showing more signs of being regular than Senator Norris has ever shown. In the recent voting Senator Capper of Kansas, Senator Harreld of Oklahoma and Senator Norbeck of South Dakota seem to have joined the other insurgents. it is noticeable that most of the senators named belong to the agricultural farm bloc in the Senate and

it seems they are sticking close to

one another. And on the Democratic side of the chamber Senators Dill of

Washington and Wheeler of Montana

There are enough of them on the Republican side of the chamber to make life miserable for the majority party at this session of Congress. All of this gives rise to the comments heard about a third party movement. One or two third party conventions have been sc heduled for the coming summer to adopt a national platform and

trying to get Senator LaFollette to

make the race as a third party candidate. He Iras not yet given his consent, but there are many persons In Washington who profess to believe that he will be the one chosen. In the past few weeks three white

men, two of whom were solicitors, have been convicted for assault

upon Richmond women.

The first accomplished his purpose

and was given a five.-year sentence and a flue of $100.

The second failed in his purpose and was given ninety days in jail and a fine" of $100. Both cases came up in circuit court and both women assaulted were white women. The third case was an assault upon a 17-year-old colored girl by a brush agent. In city court he was given five days in jail and a fine of $5.

The intention of each of these

three men was identical. They each

were black-hearted reptiles. The

one who succeeded in his damnable intentions was given a five-year sentence while another with the same intention, but unsuccessful, was given five days.

The law as administered makes one exactly 365 times as guilty as

the other. The mayor and prosecutor have gien out a statement warning housewives to close their doors to agents if these violations continue

and the prosecutor has suggested

that housewives go to their doors

armed with revolvers or other weapons. We differ with the mayor and prosecutor. Surely we have not come to that time when our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters must DEFEND THEMSELVES? The Constitution of the United States guarantees them

protection. What has happened? Somewhere between the signing of the Constitution of the United States back in 1787 and a five-day sentence

for an unsuccessful attempt to assault and ruin a 17-year-old American girl in the year 1924, SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED. Here is a fine, educated, colored

girl, -17 years of age.keeping house for her father, a most worthy and respected man. Here is a white man, a black-hearted reptile, selling brushes, who secures entrance into the home in the usual way. The girl, slender, frail and fair of skin, when assaulted, used her only weapon her intellect.

These facta do not alter his intentions. He is just as guilty at heart, his intentions were just the same as the other man who was given five years. The fact that this girl was colored has nothing to do with it. She is entitled to exactly

the same protection as any other

citizen.

Before we suggest to our home folks that they arm themselves in

self-protection let us administers

iiic law yioytjny. This man is serving his five days

m jau now. Prefer the proper

charge against him and if found guilty, administer punishment some

what commensurate with his act. Protect the home with the Constitution and the proper administration of law and we will not need firearms.

Klan and the Negro

Never, in the history of the Klan. ; has a single word been written or

littered which might be considered ; as objectionable to any thinking i negro, and the negro leaders of to-: day know it and are admitting it. Negro evangelists, negro editors and ; thinking negro laymen realize that i the Klan is the champion of the public school, which is the very heart and soul of the negro's advancement. They also know that in Texas and elsewhere in the south, the Kian has been the protector of virtuous negro womanhood as well as that of the white woman. One of the tenets of the creed of the Klan is prevention ot the cause of mob violence and lynching. How better could this be carried out than by education of both races against Intermingling white and black blood? The white man of lustful habits has been taught that virtue, whether it is that of the black race or the white. And while we are on the subject, we might say that we wonder What the 'Catholics are going to do with their white and black priests- so far as their admission to convents and nunneries is concerned. And what

kind of parochial schools are they going to provide for the millions of little pickaninnies who will soon be voting citizens? Mayfield's Weekly. History is the essence of innumerable biographies. Dawn.

Dispatchers Win Fight

For An Eight-Hour Day

CHICAGO, 111., Feb. 16. A four-

year fight for an eight-hour day and

six-day week for chief and assistant

chief dispatchers on all the rail-

; roads of the country "has been won,

I believe, by a decision of the in

terstate commerce commission which has just reached me," J. G. Luhrsen, president of the American Train

Dispatchers' Association, said Wednesday. Luhrsen said that the decision would preclude In large measure the practice of some manage

raents of requiring a 12-hour day of

chief and assistant chief dispatch ers through the expedient of term

ling them officials. The decision

places all dispatchers, except those

i having substantially the authority of

! a superintendent, under jurisdiction

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16. Federal control of motion pictures will be supported by churches and reform agencies of the United States, according to a plan being worked out at a conference here recently. The bill which delegates to the conference have advocated has been introduced in Congress by William D. Upshaw (D.), representative from Georgia, referred to the committee on education, of which Frederick W. Dallinger (R.), representative from Massachusetts, is chairman, and is expected to have a hearing in about

two weeks. ! The bill provides for a federal motion picture commission of seven members, including the federal commissioner of education, ex officio, and two women. It is provided that two members of the commission must be lawyers, two to be teach

ers and at least one to have experience with the motion picture busi

ness as member of a state or city board of censorship or commission on motion pictures.

None of the members of the com

mission shall be "organization men or women, so-called, of any party." The commission shall licence films for interstate and foreign cononrce, and upon payment of a fee of $21

will examine scenarios to determine

whether they conform to the set of standards which the bill imposes as a requisite for licensing.

The bill does not compel the sub

mission of films for licenses; but it

prohibits the carriage and transpor

tation of any unlicensed film in in

terstate commerce, or the exportation to a foreign country and importation from a foreign country of any unlicensed film.

The intention was to delay intro

duction of any bill until after the

conference In order to give the motion picture producers an opportun

ity to state their case. Refusal ot

Will H. Hays to attend was the rea

son for bringing out the bill in

advance of the conference, said Canon William Sheafe Chase of New

York in the keynote speech.

He charged the industry with be

ing under fire as a trust, said that It has been conspicuously successful in

its political activities to block gov

ernment regulation ana questioned
