Women of Klan Attend Funeral at Butlerville BUTLERVILLE, lnd., Feb. 9. The body of Mrs. Eva Stoidard, wife of Lieutenant Elmer Stotdard, of Indianapolis, was brought here for burial February 4, accompanied by a guard of honor of Women of the Klan. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Sebum, of Madison, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Ledbetter. About seventy Women of the Klan of Jennings county attended the services at the church and accompanied the remains to the cemetery, where short services were conducted. Among the floral offerings was a beautiful cross. Mrs. Stotdard was a former resident of Butlerville, but had lived for many years in Indianapolis. 1 Is This Part WASHINGTON, D . C, Feb. 9. "The Roman Catholic 'System', as is well known, has a twofold nature religious and political. The peril of Romanism is not so much in her religion, but the political system that lias grown therefrom in her attempts to control governments. "In this ambition to dominate politics and governments Itself it has been the author of the most tragic events In human history." How well the above quotations fit Into what follows. There Is in Washington today a rapidly crystallizing sentiment tbat the acts of Edward L. Doheny have wery definite significance. Take for instance the Teapot Dome oil scandal in which Doheny is mixed up. One sensation on top of another fallows from day to day as public men are brought into the limelight. Is it possible that tbe public resources of America are be ing used lik ther re -to carry out this scheme of hiring public men, buying former cabinet officers, senators and congressmen galore. Even as smart men as George' Creel, late publicity man for . the govern ment during the world war, became involved, and according to bis testimony even before he knew it or realized It he was drawing a salary from the Doheny interests to the tune of $5,000 a year. Among the latest acts of thuggery in this city under the administration of Mayor Ora Davis, professed can didale for governor of Indiana, is that of the attempted slugging of Rev. Mr. McHrayer, of the Liberty Avenue M, K. Church, the minister whom Mayor Davis called a common, dirty liar. The attempt was made last night as the pastor was on his way to the church to deliver his evening sermon. The minister, however, escaped serious harm. It is believed here that the attack was, indirectly caused by Mayor Davis' tirade against the minister in the local papers. One of the pledges by Mr. Davis, is" that, should he be elected governor, he will '.clean up the state. This appears ridiculous in the face of the conditions that exist in the city of Terre Haute at this time where thugs, murderers, footpads, burglar? and vbootleggers ply their trades week in and week out. It would appear from the number of murders, holdups and robberies in Terre Haute within the last month that the condition is growing worse instead, of better. Citizens oTerre Haute, according to opinions ' voiced ' throughout the city, would much prefer that Mayor Davis spend the time he now uses making campaign speeches, promising to clean up the state, in cleaning up Terre Haute. BIG CLASS INITIATED TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Feb. 11. Despite a pouring down rain more than one hundred candidates were initiated into the Ku Klux Klan last week during a ceremonial at which the work was exemplified by the Sugar Creek Unit. Much efficiency was shown by the Klansmen putting on the work. Last Monday night Klansmen or Vigo county were guests of the Lost Creek Unit where another large class was initiated. The Rev. Hoy H Deer, of the First Baptist church officiated. The Women of the Ku Klux Klan had charge of the funeral and one hundred women ii: robes attended the funeral at Highland Lawn Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, two children Robert and Jack, her parents, twe brothers and three sisters. Other public men are doing the same, yet others ave caught in the dragnet. Will such interests date go as far as to attempt to break into our school system? There is no telling how far they will make efforts to carry out their system. Many public men have been hired or bought up apparently without knowing it or realizing what they have done. Of course, they must glye something in return. If this force is so silent and invisible that the best minds in America can't see It, It remains the duty of the Ku Klux Klan to bring it into the open and expose the master mind and master hand. It is amazing to the men themselves who hare been led into it blindly. When they find it out, they resign or make "a quick get-away. Mr Moore resigne when he found what was going on. Watch others scatter. Washington is taking notice of the manner in which McAdoo was dragged into the affair by Doheny. The "master mind, on the witness stand asserted that his firm had paid $250,000 to McAdoo as a fee. Washington Has New Scandal Brewing With More Sfeam Than Any Teapot Dome
Twenty-six Congressmen, Led by Congressman King (111.), Brewer, Are About to Find Out What Is Happening in
(Bureau Publication and Kducatlon) WASHINGTON, Feb. 12. Have you ever seen one of those one dollar bills containing the head of the pope? Keep your eye open for it and look in the corners and on the marginal lines. If it is not plain at first glance turn the bill upside down and take a look. And when you are looking just remember that all paper bi.ls are printed. in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington and Uncle Sani pays employes to work there. But that is not the biggest sensation. Have you ever gotten possession of one of those spurious Liberty bonds that were printed in tbe Bureau of Engraving and Printing? Evidence is said to be at hand to' show that $1,000,000 in alleged duplicate Liberty bonds were printed and circulated. Others are known - to have been cashed by the Treasury Department and seme-have been destroyed and there is no telling Just how much crookedness has been going on. All of which is starting an investigation here by members of Congress and the writer predicts that another sensation is brewing which will blow off the lid with a louder noise than that which accompanied the uncovering ef the Teapot Dome oil scandal. ..." There is yet an unwritten story to all of this scandal in the Bureau ot Engraving and-Printing and those who are seeking to uncover It are being hounded to the bitter end by the secret service department of the government whose head Is William J. Burns, a most devoted man to his faith, which is not of the Protestant type.. . , . t " v Warren G, Harding, late president.

President Harding heard of what was going on in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and he wanted to get at the bottom of it. He did not pick a man from the inside" to make the investigation for him, but on account of his long experience In making complete investigations Charles B. Brewer, a special assistant to the attorneygenera), was the man Harding se-' lected. Brewer went to work in his quiet way and collected the evidence which he laid before President Harding. It evidently satisfied Mr. Harding, for in the twinkle of an eye be caused the dismissal of 28 employes, from the Bureau of Engraving-and Printing. For some reason Which President Harding never made public he gave no details of why this bunch, was suddenly dismissed. Senator Caraway, of Arkansas, and other senators began an investigation and they hounded, the admin istration from that day to the day President Harding died, to have those 28 persons reinstated. Mr. Brewer now -says he convinced President Harding that the government has lost untold millions as a result of the irregularities in the bureau. Mr. Brewer was advised by mem bers of Congress to take the court action he did to forestall others from Bmothering or destroying the alleged evidence he has obtained. Life of Constitutional Government Now at Stake, Declares Klan Head U. S. School System Repugnant to Pope, Speaker Says Array of Vital Facts Set Before Huge Audience in First Public Appearance in Indianapolis. America Now in Midst, of Crucial Struggle to Balk Collapse of Public School System and Roman Hierarchy Is Deadly Enemy to America's System of Education, Is Assertion of Imperial Wizard, Who
Enters Into Exhaustive Resume of School Question as It Now Stands in America
Before a most enthusiastieaudience which jammed the huge Cadle Tabernacle Wednesday night, Dr. H.'W. Evans, Imperial Wizard of the Knights of theKu Klux Klan, delivered a ringing message to the American 'people, in which he set before them an array of facts that are the most vital importance to the welfare of America and Americans. - Choosing as his subject, s-The Public School Problem in America," Dr. Evans struck' straight from the shoulder and in unvarnished words declared that the heirarchy of the Roman Catholic church stands against America on the public school' question. - .
HIGHLIGHTS IN .ADDRESS ; BY IMPERIAL W12AKD f y prosperity, a ml happiness could be obtained only through free public schools, open to all, good enougn ror ail ana attended by" all. . Our ideals and traditions are being weakened by disrespect and inattention. Our politicians seek not the common welfare, but their own success. Our schools are in every way inadequate; they have not the institutional standing to which they are. entitled; they do not prevent illiteracy, not always promote patriotism; too often they teach a divided allegiance. In all things, public and private, truth must prevail. Individually, that means intelligence, health and virtue. Nationally, it means liberty and justice, the safeguarding of our traditions, the fulfillment of our ideals. I now advocate the adequate education of our future citizenship through a free public school sys tem, as I nave pleaded, for a rigidly. enforced immigration, ndaptdito our ideals and needs. The two remedies go together. You can not disassociate Citizenship from civilization. We have a governmentof, by and for the people. The' great problem, then, concerns two vital things; the character and the ability of our composite people. Their development, hitherto neglected, is a public responsibility paramount to all other constructive duties of the state. In the face of such facts, I maintain that no citizen can oppose democratic education in America unless he be an un-American enemy of our institutions, The heirarchy of the Roman Catholic church stands against America on this issue. The public school, in its every phase, aspect and result, is repugnant to the Pope's papal dream of world-wide temporal dominion.. . The heirarchy believes in the closest connection between church and state. We demand, in the interest of democracy, that they be completely separated. Through(Contlnued from page 1) out the centuries this attitude ot the Vatican has never changed. It never will. '. The. heirarchy, as a religious or ganizatton, demands the- temporal right to dominate education, high and low, because that control would facilitate the spread and acceptance of its own-sovereignty in every country affected and finally throughout the world. . Catholicism Is built and maintains Itself, in alt its temporal and (Continued on Page 5)

and thai we 3re now in the midst of a crucial battle for the Horace Mann kind and quantity of public school education. In prefacing his speech Dr. Evans referred to Abraham Lincoln the Emancipator, and said: The Public School Problem In America Out of his boyhood has come to us the sublimely simple supplication of Abraham Lincoln: "God help father, help mother, help sister, help everybody, teach me to - read and write.
