Ur dAHAliA ur&mi Trip of 186 Miles Is Made in Two Days, Where It Formerly Took 12 Days
OASIS OP TOZEUR, Southern Tunisia, Jan. 5. For the first time in history the great sand dunes ot the Sahara have been crossed by an automobile, and a roadway has been opened up between Southern Algeria
and Southern Tunisia, which are separated by an expanse ot desert land 186 miles wide, .including sixtytwo miles ot the worst sand dunes of the whole desert, This district, lying between Touggourt, Algeria, and Tozeur, Tunisia, has hitherto been practicable for crossing by camel caravan, the trip taking ten or twelve days. Now it has been
crossed by an automobile in - two days. President Dalpiaz ot the Compagnie Generate TransatlarfUque, with a party ot newspapermen, left Touggourt on the morning of Dec. 28 and reached the Oasis of El-Oued, seventy-five miles away, the same evening. Dec, 29 was spent in exploring the Oasis. Dec. 30 the second stage of the journey was accomplished, Tozeur being reached well after dark. The whole journey wsb carried out without any untoward Incident, although the difficulties encountered were tremendous. Many milees ot. sand hills were ascended and descended at angles varying from 30 to 35 degrees sometimes even 40 and even 45. AH this was accomplished with almost unbelievable ease by two automobiles specially designed for the purpose. The automobile used has six pairs of wheels. Of these the eight rear wheels receive the propelling power from an ordinary ten horsepower engine. Carrying six besides the chauffeur, the car weighs about three tons when wholly loaded.

IN CINCINNATI CHURCH IN BEPLY TO BITTER ATTACK
Speaker, Looking From Inside. Out,
Tells What He Knows About Knights of Ku Klnx Klan
CINCINNATI, O., Jan. 5. Speak-
ing to a crowd of men and women
that filled every available seat and
overflowed Into the aisles and vesti
bule of the large historic Richmond Street Christian church at Cincinnati, the Rev. Orval W. Baylor, pastor of the church, hurled challenge after challenge at the enemies of the Ku Klux Klan during the coirse of his sermon on "Murder or the Bal
lot, Which?" recently.
Two Paulist fathers lecturing In
St. Peter's Cathedral under the di
rection of the Unity League had bitterly denounced the Ku Klux Klan on the Wednesday previous and Mr.
Baylor was the only Protestant min
inter in Cincinnati to answer the
Catholic fathers.
The local press gave liberal space
to Mr. Baylor's remarks and nothing has happened in this city that has
given the Klan the publicity it re
ceived on this occasion!
Hundreds came from Indiana and
Kentucky and the church was practically filled more than an hour be
fore the service began. Scores who
came late were turned away.
The local Klan threw a guard of more than one hundred men around
the church as well as having a nuro ber scattered throughout the audi ence.
Two Catholic priests accompanied
by two stenographers were present.
The applause at times' continued for two or three minutes. Not only did the speaker lay bare the intolerance and schemes of Romanism but he
also enunciated in clear-out tones
the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. Hundreds of telephone calls and letters were received by Mr. Baylor the next day from Protestant people, the majority of -whom said that they were not members of the Klan, commending him for bis courageous stand and for the clear-cut statements regarding the organization. Excerpts From the Sermon His sermon in part is as follows: "I want it clearly understood at the outset of my sermon that I hold no brief for the Ku Klux Klan. I am not speaking tonight in answer to the bigoted and intolerant remarks ot the Paulist father, who loosed his wrath against the Ku Klux Klan fn his noonday lecture at St. Peter's Cathedral last Wednesday, because I feel that the Ku Klux Klan needs defending. I am interested in something far greater than that I am
speaking in defense of the Protestant
faith. The Rev. Bertrand Conway has not only attacked the Ku Klux Klan, but he has also thrown down
the dare of battle to the Protestant host. "To say that the Ku Klux Klan is
neither American nor Christian is to utter an untruth and displays one's
ignorance as well as his prejudice.
By what authority does the speaker
essay to tell the people what the Ku Klux Klan is not. Does he speak aa
one having inside knowledge, or are his remarks the result of an intoler-; ant and bigoted prejudice against all things Protestant? Suppose that I were to tell you tonight that the Knights of Columbus, an organization from which all non-Roman Catholics are excluded, have vowed to drive every Protestant from the face of the earth. What answer would Father Conway make? He would probably eay that I know nothing about the Knights of Columbus and his assertion would be partly right. My answer to bis charge against the Ku Klux Klan is the same. He knows Tiothmg about the Klan. His "remarks uttered in St. Peter's Cathe
dral reveal this fact. "Standing in all good Conscience before God and man tonight I want to be just as tolerant as I know how. I want to be fair with all parties concerned. Let us seek to know the truth and tell the truth. Our dear
Lord has said 'And sye shali know the truth, and the truth shaU make you
free.' "When the searchlight of
truth is turned on, multitudes who
are now in Ignorance concerning the
Ku Klux Klan will be set tree from
their bonds. Enemies of this great Protestant organization dare not tell the truth about it. They lead
many astray by falsehoods and bi
goted assertions, and ere . long tae truth shall become known and 'tire truth shall make you free.'
Unvarnished Falsehoods "The man who charges that the
Ku Klux Klan whips, tars and feath
ers and murders the victims of its hate utters a falsehood. That may seemto be strong language but the time has come for the use of strong language. . When millions of nativeborn -jpfotestaot Americans are slandered and; branded aa traitor to America and unchristian, by one who knows mtle, it anything at all, about the Ku. Klux Klaa, and whose remarks are heralded broadcast by the press. It would be cowardly to remain silent and permit the lie te pass unchallenged. "Every man and woman before becoming a member of the Ku Klux Klan, swears; not to take the law in their own bands, but, te stand back
el- the duly elected officers is Its enforcement. From the standpoint of the law the Ka Khix. Klan does
not presume ta be the law or even to beeorae the law. The Klan is the first fa the land to recognize the taw
and dedicate all of Us power under'
the maintenance of lawana order.
It stand bacjt ot w President of the
United Statelet the Congress? of the supreme - court ot thei governor of the several states, sheriffs et the counties, and policeiaeu, and swears an everlasting allegiance to them and loyalty to them to helping to suppress the wrong and maintain the right. - ..i
The Ka Klax Klan has -been called
an anti organization. It is not an ti
anybody or "anything. It is positively and forever a pro organisation. The Kiss does not work against anyone; it works for those wae have the
Lfirst rights in this great land of ours.
Because the Ku Klux Klan membership Is cot open to Roman Catholics, Je-w-s, negroes .and foreign-bora citi
zens is no reason for its being dubbed
anti-Catholic, anti-Jew or anti-negro. Exclusive Organisations ' . "Every religious, social, political and fraternal organization in America is both inclusive and exclusive in
its membership. Masonry is both in
clusive and exclusive, both as to color, faith and moral Qualities. The Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus ie exclusive. Who ever heard of a Protestant man having membership in the Knights of Columbus? '"The Jews have their, organization,
secret, military, and all 'but despotic the B'nai B'rith. Do you think for one minute that a Gentile could gain
membership in thai organization?
"The Ka Klux Klan includes all
white, native-born Protestant Amer
icans; it excludes all others. In this the Constitution, even in its spirit, is
not violated.
"When Father Conway tells you
that the Ku Klux Klan is neither
American nor Christian, he not only
utters a falsehood but he insults
approximately I. 40,000 . native-born
American Protestant men and women
of Hamilton county. He brands hun
dreds of Cincinnati's best citizens as traitors to everything American and classes, them with agnostics, infidels
and pagans. He goes further than that. He declares that Protestantism,
whose very presence in the world to
day is both obnoxious and detri
mental to the church he represents,
is un-Christian.
"Are you willing to believe that these forty thousand men and women in Hamilton county are nil-American and unchristian? Do you believe that approximately fifteen million
men and women in the United States
who belong to the Ku Klux Klan are
un-American and unchristian? Had
the speaker said there are some in the Klan who are neither American
nor Christian,' his declaration
might have carried some weight. But
he makes a wholesale indictment.
He makes pagans and traitors out
of the entire 15,000,000.
From the Inside
"I agree with Father Conway when
he says" that "a secret society that
constitutes itself police force, Judge
hangman and even dictator, should
ber. banned by every decent citizen.'
But I challenge him to prove a sin
gle case, worthy ot serious consideration, where the Ku Klux Klan has
ever been convicted beyond a shadow
oi aoaot, oi exercising ponce rorce, judicial powers, hangman's rights or
the authority ot a dictator; as one, who looks from the inside out and
not from the outside in, I deny the allegations in part and in whole. Our
courts give preference to witnesses
who know the facts and look with
favor upon the testimony of eyewit
nesses. What I tell you tonight is from the inside. Father Conway is on the outside trying to look in. His colored glasses of intolerance and
hatred do not permit him to see the truth and he would hem you wear the same kind. But God forbid.
'Know the truth and the truth wilS
make you freef
one might expect to find members
of the Ku Klux Klan dressed in the simple garb of a barbarian and the savage, or to find them all seated
about a campfire hungrily devouring
the flesh of a human being when he
enters the meeting place of Klansmen, according to Father Conway, who says: "The Ku Klux Klan is a
relapse into savagery and barbar
ism.' America borders on the stage of Bolshevism and revdltr and condi
tions such as now prevail in Russia and in bankrupt Germany may soon
sweep our country if it be true that
these approximately fifteen million
men and women who are members of the Ku Klux Klan are barbarians and savages.
"Exactly the ODDoarte is true, how
ever.- Every single one I tnese ni-

to work for law observance. They

Cress Lighted In Covington .
As the flames from the Mt, Au
burn cross died away, Kiansmen of Covington lighted a cross n Forest Hills, west of. Covington, which burned an hour,
About 500 Klansmen participated
in the ceremony here.
The Cincinnati Times-Star had the
following to say of the celebration:
While the dwellers in the little
settlement known as Bethlehem, slept peacefully on .Christmas eve.
a gigantic cross of are burBt into
flames on Jackson Hill, on the brow ot Mt. Auburn, lighting the heavens
with its red glare and shedding its glow over houses for -several
blocks. The cross was seen by belated shoppers in the downtown dis
trict, by carol singers who marched
the streets of the northern Kentucky
towns, by residents on the hilltops.
The task of preparing and erect
ing the cross begun shortly after 9 o'clock. ,Sentteels stationed them
selves at points several hundred
yards on each side ot the' spot and barred the way to all inquiring citi
zens. Then could be heard the sound of pick and shovel and the pounding
of hammers as the spikes in the
cross-arm were driven -home. The
creaking of pulleys and the whine of ropes told of a makeshift derrick used to hoist the gigantic cross to an erect position. The cross was made
of two telephone poles. The up
rights and cross-arm were swathed
in cotton, which had been soaked
with an inflammable liquid, v : Labor Ceases . "It was nearing the hour of mid
night when the clash of tools and
the noise of labor ceased-
"There was a tiny flicker ot light as a match was struck, and then,
with a roar, -the flames leaped up
ward along the shaft and darted out
along the horizontal arms.
1 "For an hour the cross burned
and as the flames died down a little light was seen to kindle far to the
southwest, on the Kentucky side of the river. Investigation showed it to be a second cross on the Forest Hills,
.est of Covington. As the first cross
gradually decreased in briljtiance, the
second cross seemed to increase', so that when the first had become dark
the second was burning brightly."
