SECT DAVIS WAMS; OLD-TIME RELIGION
Speaking From Pulpit, U. S. Labor Head Declares Self to Be a Fundamentalist
SHARON, Pa., Dec. 24. Secretary ol Labor James J. Davis declared himself In favor of the old-time re
ligion while speaking from the pulpit of the Welsh Baptist church here
last night. "I hold a deep and abid
ing faith in the firmness of the foundation of true and undefiled re
ligion, and I can see but little in the future for those who seek to tear down that foundation," said Secretary Davis. Science and Religion Sot Opposites Declaring that science and religion are not opposed to each other, Sec
retary Davis said, "To my mind, true science and true religion can march forward hand in "hand.- Science need not seek to destroy that for which Christianity stands. Indeed, science may take heed before It throws itself against the rock of ages, else It may Itself be destroyed In Its present form." Davis Is a Baptist Secretary Davis attended Sunday school in the Welsh Baptist church
where he spoke. Many tender as
sociations arose in his mind as he re
visited the little church. He spoke
with unusual depth of feeling.
He said that "in these days of many strange and weird beliefs "we must hold fast to our faith in God,
else neither individual nor nation can
endure. I will take my religion In
the old-fashioned way. We are be
coming so modern In everything that some of us are even trying to modernize God. "The faith that lives today . will never die. The- old-fashioned" religion with its belief in God is stronger now, despite all attacks."

ARKORY FILLED TO HEAR KL AN LECTURE
PAULDING. :0.. Dtci ,31.--The stat?rarmory Was filled. lasfTuesday night with persons who were anxious -to know more about the principles of Americanism as set forth by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and a well-known speaker gave a very intelligent address, in which he explained the principles of the great order,. .
The speaker was enthusiastically
received and when his speech was
ended it could be plainly seen by the applause that the sentiment of the
crowd was with him. Much interest has been shown in Klancraft here of late and many of those at the armory expressed a desire to become affiliated with the order. It is understood that the initiation of a large class of candidates will take place in the near future.

STEUBBNVILLB, 0., Dec. 29. As the special investigation into laxity of law enforcement at this and in
Jefferson county progresses, it is said that many startling facts have been revealed. The special probe is
in charge of Sherman S. Deaton. It is reported that Mr. Deaton made a
report to the attorney-general last
Saturday.
It is said that the probe is not yet
ended. The special investigator, it
is understood, had many persons in
Jefferson county voluntarily offer
their services and such information
as they possessed, "Many of the vis
itors to the investigators are women
of the sensible type, says Deaton. This investigation- was precipitated by various assaults on dry officers, and culminated in the murder ot Prohibition Officer Conrad.
