CHURCH FUND AIDED BY RLAN OFFERING

INDEPENDENCE, Kaiv Dec. 3. The building fund of the United Brethren Church In this city was given another substantial boost Sun

day when a body of twenty-one Knights of the Ku Klux Klan entered the church as services were In progress and presented $500 to the pastor. In presenting the gift, the spokesman urged a renewal of faith and congratulated the members upon their judgment in building "not only a monument to Independence and vicinity, but a monument to Christ." The new edifice is one of the finest buildings of its kind in the middle west and was erected at a cost of thousands of dollars.

MEETING AT PONTIAC IS WELL ATTENDED

PONTIAC, Mich., Dec. 3. A meeting of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan here last Monday night was attended by a large crowd of ' en

thusiastic persons, who gave rapt

attention to the speaker of the evening. The speaker gave an explanation of Klan principles which was quite different from the idea that newspapers would convey to the public concerning the great order. Many who attended saw the Klan in an entirely new light when the meeting was over and expressed their desire to become affiliated with the organization. The speaker was interrupted many times with bursts of applause from his audience.

MUSKEGON, Mich., Nov.30. For

the second time within a period of

fa month, a great cross burst into

flames from the peak of a high hill overlooking the city of Muskegon

and its harbor. The great flaming emblem of Protestant Christianity cast a weird glow far out over. Lake Muskegon, and

blending with the light of a beautiful moon reflected a soft white light upon the upturned faces of thousand of Muskegon county citizens. Within the sacred glow and encircled by an ever-watchful cordon of Rilent white-clad figures, several hundred men took the oath of a Klansman and vowed' anew their allegiance to God and country. With the approach of the holiday

season there has been increased ac

tivity in the ranks of Muskegon county Klansmen and startling developments are in store for the people of Muskegon county. Just what form of action is pending is not known.

KLAN FLOAT AWARDED FIRST PRIZE AT FAIR

WILLI STON, Fla., Dec. 3. A

beautiful and spectacular -float, entered by the Levy County Klan was awarded first prize recently at the Levy County Community fair here. The float led a parade of several hundred Klansmen and was attractively decorated with American flags, surmounted by a huge, electrically illuminated fiery cross. The Knights were mounted and the pageant was unusually spectacular. This is the first instance, so far as is known here, of a Klan having been awarded highest honors at any state or county fair.

This doctrine is the foundation of the church; it is also the foundation of personal life and character, as it is written "Othenoundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus Christ." It is also the sum and substance of all preaching; for

no man preaches who -does not point an index finger toward the cross, saying, "Behold the Lamb of God." On this fact rests the renoAyn of Luther, ' the great reformer. His

only glory is a reflected brightness from the face of Him of whom it Is written, "There is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved." If the Protestant church still lives, it lives by virtue of the survival of the fittest. It was a great truth that was uttered by Gamaliel, "If this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to naught; but if it be of God, ye can not overthrow it, lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against

God." The four hundred .years of Protestantism have -proven its right

to survive. One of the most affecting sights in history is the procession of dying religions and philosophies following one another toward oblivion. Truth only can survive. Protestantism lives because the truths it represents all center in Christ, of whom it is written, "His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom, and his dominion Is forever and ever. The earth shall be consumed with a fervent heat, the heavens

shall be rolled together as a scroll; but the Word of the Lord endureth forever. The mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." This is our inheritance from Luther. This Is Protestantism. Its only pontiff is Christ, whose Dame is above every other name in heaven or on earth. Its only hierarchy is the procession of torch-bearers who go forth to illuminate the dark places of cruelty and the habitations of death, and of

reapers who come irom harvest fields bringing their sheaves with them.

TOPEKA, Kan., Dec. 3. Americans must shake off their lethargy and adopt militant methods if they are to eradicate the alien peril, declared Dr. Frank L. Loveland, prom

inent lecturer and Mason, in an address delivered here under the auspices ofRound Table Chapter No. 9, Order of DeMolay. "An adhesive, militant, persistent minority will sway, the majority," Dr. Loveland said. In proving this point, Dr. Loveland pointed out that fewer than 4 per cent of "the Russians were bolshevists.

"One of the most hopeful thing3 to be seen on the horizon of the future

of this country is the rising tide of eager sentiment among our people for a wider and deeper knowledge concerning our nation, its founders, its purposes, and its institutions," he said. "Millions who heretofore have been indifferent, careless and unconcerned as to these are now banding themselves together as students in the great school of Americanism. The American people are awaking to the fact that it Is as important for this nation to live as it was for it to be born.

Bible I)Mnely Inspired Its only Book is that which was written by holy men who were moved by the Holy Ghost, and its only creed is that which is framed from the scriptures by men sitting .at the feet of Christ. Its grandest cathedrals are the lives of holy men who realize their holy birth -and destiny and "who know their rights, and, knowing, dare maintain. Its most

fervent litany is this, "From all tyranny of mind and conscience and heart, -Good Lord deliverus." Its grandest music is the" breaking of the chains of sin which bind men, and its magnificent gloria is: "All hail the power of Jesus' name, Letangels prostrate fall.

Bring forth the royal diadem And crown Him Lord of all." You see from time to tjme Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty in the harbor of New York, and always with an increasing interest. It is Indee a magnificent conception of human geniusT Liberty upholding TTer torch, enlightening the world. But let us close our eyes and look again. Here is a still more magnificent conception. A woman fairer than Freedom, the comely figure of the Bride of God. "With one hand she lifts the

veil of slumber from her eye3 and

with the other she upholds the cross from which, radiates a brighter and mote glorious light than ever shone on land or sea. Liberty enlightening the world? "What kind of liberty? Everything that liberty implies In every angle of life. That Statue of Liberty represents a con

stitution which guarantees the right of a church to be free free from the entanglements of state free to give to all men the only true liberty, the liberty of the sons of God whom

the truth only makes free. This, I believe, in my soul of souls, is the Almighty's great purpose concerning the American republic. This is our inheritance from the past, drenched with the very life blood of those who dared, those who struggled, those who fought, those who died. It is ours. Shall it belong to our children's children? It Is for us to say, even as it was for our fathers to say it should be for us.

Politicians Begin to Quake "Politicians of the baser sort are trembling before this rising tide and are turning pale, well knowing that an aroused public conscience will sweep them out of power into everlasting oblivion. " "We Americans should bear in mind that genuine manhood gave origin to our democratic institutions, and nothing but a genuine manhood can maintain them. It Is

no mean ideal of men that declares them all free and equal.

"America today is big with destiny. Our ideals, our institutions, our schools, our laws that we are making, the manners and customs that we are developing, the churches we are founding, are the molds into which two billion are to be poured in the coming tomorrow. "The past of America is safe; the present is in a state of flux; but the future of this country must not be neglected in the thinking and acting of men today.

"In the press and in the pulpit, at

the bar and in the business world, dishonest and lazy intellectual life is as rife as it is appalling. The press twists the fact andtruth to justify the lie. "He is the best citizen who asks nothing whatever from the state, but in return does much for the state."

ATHENS, Ga. Work on the new Klavern being built by Athens Klan Is going forward rapidly, and it is hoped that the Klan will soon be holding meetings in the building.

McCOOK, Neb. Two Klan initiations were held here last week,, and large classes inducted into the order at both meetings. An organizer of th& Women of the Ku Klux Klan was in the city at the same time and naturalized a large class at a ceremonial held in the Christian church.
