COLUMBUS, t)., Nov. 7. Last Tuesday evening 700 new Klansmen were made here in the presence of over 3.000 of the assembled hosts.

A band of thirty pieces furnished music for the occasion. The candidates, when in readiness, formed a solid mass of men eight abreast, in columns eighty-five men deep. When the procession started, headed by the

band, the throng cheered lustily as the marchers stepped off to the tune of "Onward, Christian Soldiers." One Week's Harvest This large class of initiates is said to be only one week's harvest. With the coming of the winter season it is going to be a real problem to find

suitable quarters in which to carry on the work of the Klan, and to accommodate the immense throngs of. Columbus citizens, as well as visiting Klansmen, who will want to attend the indoor Klonklaves. The Columbus meetings are exceptionally enthusiastic. The enthusiasm is contagious. The initiates invariably answer the questions put to them with a great shout. Those

answers are enough to carry terror to the hearts of the enemies of their native land. The Knights of the Columbus Klan are looking forward to a groat winter season.

WASHINGTON, D. C, Nov. 5. That a most radical change in immigration rules must be made and that Congress must soon act to clear up the tangle which now ensues in

regard to immigration, is seen in the reports out of New York where quotas are being exceeded and which is claimed by some to be due to the steamship companies in racing to America with jammed steamers. Already there has been talk of making steamship companies liable and it is now thought that this matter will be brought to a head.

NEW KLAN LITERARY

SERVICE AT COLUMBUS

Firm Decides Work of American Order Is Worthy of Compilation

COLU.MBUS. O., Nov. 7. The American Literary Service, of 326

Stoneinan building, this city, has decided that the Ku Klux Klan movement is one of real worth to America, ami has ordered that henceforth any subject pertaining to the Knights, Women or Junior Klan organizations would be given prompt and careful- attention hy its organization. This firm makes a business of preparing club papers, speeches, sermons, debates and special articles for the press; of editing manuscripts for books and pamphlets; of compiling and editing catalogs, and of getting up high-grade commercial circularizing matter, and publication copy of all kinds.

MAT DEPORT 3,000 NEW YORK, Nov. 3. More than 3,000 would-be immigrants, including

1,367 who came on the Leviathan, which arrived today from England,

face deportation, it was announced tonight by Commissioner of Immigration Curran. Quotas of eleven countries, including Great Britain, have been ex

hausted, Commissioner Curran said he had been informed by telephone by Commissioner General of Immigration Husband of Washington. Mr. Curran said he expected about 2,000 British subjects would be sent back unless some of them, along with subjects of other countries, were allowed to enter under special rulings. Bnssia Also Listed Russia also has exceeded her quota

by 500, Mr. Curran said, while tie other immigrants likely to be deported come from Greece, Egypt, Af

rica, Albania, TurKey, Palestine, Portugal, "other Europe" an if" "other Asia," under which several smaller nations are fisted. More than 10,000 immigrants are on ships in the harbor awaiting examination at Ellis Island, the commissioner said. He characterized the influx as one-of "the worst jams" the department ever has faced. In addition to the 1.367 on the Leviathan, there were 523 -on the Majestic. 54S on the Belgenland, 158 on the Cleveland and about 400 aliens on other vessels who were in excess of quotas. Most of the British were said to be on the Leviathan.

DES MOINES, Iowa, Nov. 7 The

Deep River Record. Deep River, Iowa, recently published a story about Hallowe'en pranks in which was stated: "We understand the Klan is preparing a special scourge for that, form Of depredation this year." A letter to the publication asked for information concerning the persons who were planning to take the law into their own hands in the name of the Klan and offered the editor a reward of ?100 for information that caused the arrest and conviction of the lawless persons. A- P. Hughes, manager of the Deep River Record, replies that the state

ment is absolutely groundless and

without basis in fact. He says that i he printed the statement with the

intention of putting fear into the hearts of boys bent on mischief. He admits that he used the name of the Klan as a "scarecrow."

SAYS PUBLIC SCHOOL IS GREAT EQUALIZER

BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 7. "The public school of America IS the great equalizer," declared John H. Cowles,

grand commander, before the supreme council of thirty-third degree Scottish Rite Masons, which met at Washington, D. C, last week. "It is the remover of all class feeling, the leveler of race land creed distinction, where the child of the rich mingles with the child of the poor, where the child of the Catholic should mix freely and without selfconscioosness with the child of the Jew. Mohammedan and Chris

tian, Buddhist and heathen, Latin and Celt, Americans and foreigners can meet there and have their minds moulded for the future. Then they can grasp the full meaning of liberty and fraternity and thus become fully armed with manly vigor and intelli

gent reason."

KLANSW0MEN ACTIVE AT PITTSBURG, RAN.

PITTSBURG, Kan., Nov. 7. Another big meeting o the Women of the Ku Klux Klan was held last week and a large class was naturalized. The special drive for members is meeting with great success. Scores of women are affiliating with the order, lending their aid in pro

moting the progress and welfare of j this great organization. The greatest issue at present is a Protestant -hospital for Pittsburg. The ground will he "?ared Thursday, Nov. 1.

Y The Protestant Women's Hospital

Clubs will -serve the lunch. - These clubs are composed of all Protestant women who desire to work for the hospital. They are independent of any church or organization. There are wenty-four different clubs with a total membership of fifteen hundred women. This will be a great day for Pittsburg and Protestantism. The grounds will be decorated with flags and two bands will furnish music. The ladies will be pre

pared to take care of one of the largest crowds Pittsburg has had.

SHIPPING BOARD NOTIFIED

WASHINGTON, Nov. 3. British

subjects arriving in the United States today on the Leviathan, numbering 1,367, probably can not be admitted

and may have to be deported as immigrants inadmissible" under the quota immigration law. The shipping board was notified of the fact today by Commissioner General of Immigration Husband. Authorities at Ellis Island will be notified of the situation but the immigrants will bf allowed to land and undergo examination, and the final decision as to their admissibility will not be made until reports from all

the immigration stations have been assembled. On the first examination of figures today, however, Mr. Husband found that the British quota, which is slightly more than 77,000 per year, was practically exhausted. Immigration officials are certain that some if not all of the Leviathan's load of English?, "immigrants will be deported, although the exact number can not yet be told. When the applicants at all immigration sta

tions have been examined, and when it has been decided how many of

those must be turned back by reason of regulations concerning health and personal characteristics, some of the Leviathan's passengers may be allowed entrance as substitutes for earlier arrivals.

Another Example Mr. Hughes has furnished another of the thousands of examples of the way the Klan is being- daily discredited by persons who are either enemies of the order or use its name

for some personal purpose.

Hughes is not a member of the Klan and spoke absolutely without authority or knowledge of fact when he made the assertion that the Klan was about to take thelaw into its own hands. The Deep River Record story is hut a reflection of the hundreds of words of untruth that are being printed in the newspapers of the country every day. Without respect for truth or conscience for a wrong done innocent persons, these papers are filling their columns with "gaff"

that is intended to do nothing but lie the Klan into disrespect. Proves Himself Real Man

In his letter Mr. Hughes has proven himself a real man by tell

ing the truth of the matter. Deep River should know Mr. Hughes for the honest business man that he has proven himself to be. It is felt that Mr. Hughes will not attempt to discredit the Klan in a manner that has proven to be only thoughtlessness on his part. He did not realize that he was helping the enemies of the Klan when he printed his bit of misinformation. Mr. Hughes, undoubtedly, is a true American. Mr. Hughes' letter reads: Dear Sir: I am sorry that the statement published in the issue of the Record of

October 12 had no more solid foundation than "hearsay." I printed the

item on "hearsay" information in the hope that it would have the effect of deterring the boys and young mem from destroying property on Hallowe'en night. The publication fol

lowed the burning ot a fiery cross on-the hill west of -town on the Saturday evening previous, and the clan ancLits doings were subjects of considerable comment. I have no knowledgethat citizens intend to take the law into their own- hands. If I had such information I Would be pleased to pass it on, but our citizens are law-abiding and the item was only intended to scare the youngsters into quietness, and the burning cross and following comment made the item all the more appropriate, using the name of the clan

as a scarecrow. Nothing detrimental to the clan was intended or im

plied. Hoping this letter will clear the matter up for you, I remain, Very trulv yours, A. P. HUGHES.

CLAN IS NOT THE KLAN DES MOINES,' Iowa, Nov. 7. In Mono, Iowa, there is an organization of men, which has been doing business for twenty years. They call theftise'lves the "Clan," but are not affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan at all, but most of their doctrine is Klanism. They are Americans first, last and always.

CELINA. O., Nov. 7. The Women of the Ku Klux Klan of Mercer coun

ty joined with the Knights in a big. meeting held in the fair grounds' here Wednesday evening. A national speaker addressed about 10,000 people. His talk was received withgreat enthusiasm and hearty' applause often interrupted his expressions. He incorporated in his address the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. After the lecture Klansmen in full regalia escorted one hundred and" eighty women from the agricultural hall, across the tracks to the 'inner

field where naturalization ceremonies took place. Following this about one hundred men were escorted into the field and they in turn received the solemn religious cere

monies of the order. Three fiery crosses were displayed during the ritualistic work. A large band played "Onward, Christian Soldiers." Neighboring counties including Auglaize, Allen, Van Wert and Miami, were largely represented by Klansmen. The traffic was easily handled by robed men throughout the day. The Wromen of the Ku Klux Klan1; served dinner and supper at the fair grounds.

The announcement of the exact date i for the closing of the charter has not been made, but it will be some time 'in the early months of 1924.

SUTTON, W. Va., Nov. 7. A large crowd gathered in front of the Home

National Bank last Saturday night to

hear a well-known speaker give an address on Americanism and the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. Sixty or seventy Klansmen in full regalia were on hand and the crowd formed a semi-circle about the speaker and gave " him their undivided attention. During the course of his talk, the orator was interrupted many times with bursts of applause from the crowd and sentiment here seems to be in hearty accord with the great American movement. . Touching the political policy of the

Klan, he said the Klan will strive to nominate on both party tickets clean honest men for every office men

who will enforce the law not only

because they fear the anger of the voters if they fail to do so, but be

cause they have in their hearts a love of country and its institutions that will make them desire to do their full duty. Organizations pledged to the overthrow of this government will be fought and destroyed by the peaceful process of placing men in office who will enforce the laws and thereby accomplish the destruction of such organizations.
