WEIGHT CARRYING IN AIR RECORD I&MADE
Barling Bomber Carries 33,570 Pounds to Height of 6,300 Feet
..DAYTON, O., Oct. 27. A weightcarrying altitude record was established at Wilbur Wright field Thurs
day when the Barling bomber, world's greatest airplane, rose to an i indicated distance of 6,300 feet, car- I lying a gross load of 33,570 pounds. I Piloted by Lieut. Harold R. Har- j lis. the luite craft loaded with 4 Kan'
pounds of bombs, 2,400 pounds of gasoline and the weight of the three men in the' plane totaling 540 pounds, left the earth after the short run of 15.4 seconds. It was in the air one hour 45 minutes and 30 seconds. After landing, Lieut. Harris said
that a greater altitude could have been reached, but the shljp was brought to earth because .of the fatigue of the flyers.; Lieut. M. S. Fairchilds-and Engineer Douglas- Culver accompanied Harris on the flight, which was witnessed by officials of the Federated Aeronautique International, who will certify the barographs to officers of the association at Washington. Is Your Stomach Doing Its Work? Health Talk No. 28 By J. D. Goldsberry, D. JL. Is your stomach doing its work or is It like the one thatbelonged to Edgar Guesfs little boy. The boy thought his stomach ought to be grateful because he had given it more turkey and dressing, pie and cake, ice cream and cranberries, thun ever before, and yet it was punishing him with an awful ache. The stomach, like every other organ of the body, deIK'ikIk for its natural strength mid vigor upon the life impulses that travel the nerve lines from the spine. If there is interference with these nerve lines at the spine, due to misalignment of spinal bones, it takes chiropractic spinal adjustments to restore them to normal. The stomach should handle an occasional turkey dinner without trouble of need of the chiropractor.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27. Senator David A? Reed, chairman of the special committee investigating charges of. waste, mismanagement and mis
application of funds of he United States L Veterans' Bureau, intimated, that startling disclosures made before the committee by.E..H. Mortimer, charging Colonel Charles R. Forbes, former director of the bureau,--with having conspired with contractors and others to "clean up" vast sums, was only a small part of the alleged corruption to be disclosed. o Action at This Time While there were reports that the department of justice at once will take cognizance of the charges made
by Mortimer, the consensus of opinion among government officials is
that no action will be taken in the nature of criminal proceedings until all the evidence has been submitted to the Senate committee. On that point Senator Reed said: "All the evidence we have disclosed or will disclose of an indicta
ble nature will be at the disposal of the department of justice." Senator Reed said that the awarding of contracts was only a small part of the activities of directors of the Veterans' Bureau, and he indicated that the committee expects to
show much corruption in other mat
NEW YORK, Oct. 29. A proposal that the immigration act should be amended to place responsibility upon
the steamship companies ,for bring
ing mentally and physically unsound
aliens to America was offered by Dr
Spencer L. Dawes, state medical examiner, speaking before a conference of representatives of ten states in the Flatiron building to discuss the
problem of abnormal aliens. Proposal Heartily Approved
This proposal, heartily approved
by the other members of the con
ference, followed a general attack by
Dr. Dawes on the federal govern
ment's management of this problem
in immigration. When asked to fix the blame specifically he named the
secretary of labor. He said he had
watched immigrants admitted at the
rate of eight a minute in examina
tions for mental and physical fitness,
while twenty-seven minutes were required to examine their baggage. He charged that laxity under the present law is due to politics. After the discussion the conference members organized the Interstate Conference on Immigration, of which Dr. Dawes was elected presi
dent, Samuel D. McKenny of Chicago, vice-president, and Mrs. Elizabeth Cloonan, secretary in the New York state examiner's office, secretary.

NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 27. Fif
teen thousand Klansmen gathered
on Long Island last Saturday -to take part in a ceremonial, at which several hundred candidates were initiated into the organization. All roads led to Wantagh, where the ceremonial was held, and the Merrick road was marked for the thousands of motorists who journeyed to the place of initiation. One of the outstanding features of the affair was the fact that merchants advertised on pamphlets gotten out by the Klan preceding the meeting. This action by the shopkeepers gives a very strong idea of the growth of the Klan in this
part of New York and the sentiment
which is being manifested here.
Meeting One of Many The ceremonial was but one of
several that has been held at the same place during the past month. The Sayville Military Band gave a concert before the initiation. As a huge fiery cross threw its light over the scene the band played "Onward, Christian Soldiers." The meeting was closed, following the initiation, by the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner" by the Sayville band.

ters by officials vested with almost
unlimited power. "Xot Surprising:" "It is not surprising that there should be misapplication of funds,"
he said, "when one takes into consid-: eration that this bureau is not supervised by Congress or the cabinet. While the president has direct supervision it easily is understood how it is impossible for him to give much attention to its operations, in view of his other manifold duties. The best he can do is to appoint a director in whom he has implicit faith. "Possibilities for graft and crooked deals by officials of the bureau are staggering when one considers that one-sixth of the entire income of the government is spent by that bureau. More than 500,000,000 a year is-its cost to the government. There are
more than 30,000 employes and near
ly 500,000 beneficiaries." Senator Reed said that for, months 1.000 volunteers, mostly former service men, attorneys and physicians, have been collecting evidence relative to the management of the Veterans' Bureau and hospitals conducted by it, and that many "startling facts have been unearthed." To Probe Deeply So far as possible, Senator Reed said, the committee will go into the alleged mismanagement, of hospitals and waste of supplies, but he declared it would be impossible, in the limited time before Congress meets, for the committee to go into those subjects thoroughly. "However," he added, "much of the evidence gathered by our assistants is in such shape that- it can be made part of the record."
The committee resumes hearings
Monday. Senator Reed refused to say whether or not witnesses would be called. However, no secret is made of the determination of the committee to go to the bottom of the conspiracy -charges made against Colonel Forbes.
