AUTOiSTS CARELESS AT RAIL CROSSINGS Check on Drivers Is Kept by Pennsylvania Road in Thirteen States NEW YORK, Oct. 29. Three per cent of the automobile drivers who cross railroad tracks ale careless, according to figures sent out from the oflk-es of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. Inspectors kept check on drivers crossing railroad crossings for June, July, August and September, and found that approximately 97 per cent of them were sensible. The number of drivers checked for the four months was 242,142. Of these, 7.56G didn't seem to care whether they got killed or not. The-check was taken in the thirteen states where the lines of the railroad run. The greatest number of reckless drivers in any one month was observed in June. Excessive speed was the most common form of carelessness but various other forms were noted, such as failing to look in both directions for trains, disregarding the crossing watchman's signal, driving under crossing gates while they were being lowered, stalling on tracks, turninn around on tracks, racing to beat the train across the track and operating a car with poor brakes. OPPOSITION TRIES TO STOP BIBLE STUDY Superintendent at Bright, Who Sends His Children to Parochial Schools, Fails to Act (Special to The Fiery Cross) BRIGHT, Ind., Oct. 29. Tho alleged efforts of George Cole, superintendent of Dearborn county schools, to disregard the orders of the school board concerning the reading of the Bible in the schools of this county were to no avail, after a petition had been taken up among the parents of the children to see that the orders were carried out. It is understood that the passing! of a resolution by the board that the Bible be read each day in the schools did not sit well with the teacher here, who was seemingly opposed to education along these lines, and that she refused to comply with the wishes of tho board in this respect. An appeal was then made to Superintendent Cole, who, it is alleged, when asked to remove theteacher unless she complied with orders of the school board, said he had hired the teacher to teach and as far as he was concerned she was going to continue. Prefers Parochial School The fact that Cole sends his children to the Catholic parochial school not only brought out the significance of his actions but has also caused many here to wonder just why a man who shows preference for other schools is at the head of the public schools. This is a matter thatis being looked into at the present lime. The petition brought by the parents of the school children was unanimously signed and had its effect, the teacher who is alleged to have refused to obey orders of superiors being removed and one with American ideals put in her place. Each class now has the Bible read to it daily, and an American flag is flying over the building. The Bibles and the flag were donated by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. KLAN STANDS READY TO HELP IOWA MAYOR KLEMME, Iowa, Oct. 29. The Ku Klux Klan is getting to be quite a factor here and its strength is still growing rapidly. Following out the progressive lines of its program Klansmen have sent a letter to the mayor, advising him that they stand ready to assist him in upholding the law in every manner. The letter reads as follows: To the Honorable Mayor of Klemme, Iowa, Greetings: You being the constituted authority and the honorable mayor of Klernme, Iowa, we pledge to you our unqualified support and assistanceJa the conduct of your office and will aid and assist you in the proper performance of your duties and the maintaining of law and order, as defined by our local laws, state laws, and the laws by which these United States are governed. SERVICES HELD FOR DECEASED KNIGHT WILKINSON', Ind., Oct. 27. About three hundred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan appeared in full regalia at the burial of Paul Faurot, at the Greenfield cemetery Sunday, following the funeral services held at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Faurot. -The Rev. John Blocker, of Wilkinson M. E. Church, and the Rev. Lowel Wilson, of Lewisville M. E. Church, conducted the services, and headed the body of Knights Templar who attended the funeral. Mr. Faurot died at his home in Wilkinson after an illness of ten days. He was 2S years of age and is survived by a widow and two daughters, ages 7 and 5 years;-his parents and one sister. Not a Matter of Jest 'Tis a Warning One of the Sunday School, associations prepared a simple questionnaire some time ago designed to ascertain how much or how little the average boy or girl, knows about Bible facts. The questions were not difficult. Fifty years ago an eight-year-old would have answered the entire tenjueries offhand without staggering, stumbling or coming up once to breathe. But nowadays things are different. The children are more apt to know where Dempsey swatted, Firpo than where Moses smashed the Egyptians. The Christian Herald, commenting on the result of this memory test, asserted that only 27 per cent could name five books of the Old Testament, 29 per cent could name five books of the New Testament and that but 9 per cent knew what majestic Personality spoke the Beatitudes and could quote one of them. If these astounding results are true the thing is not a matter of jest, but a cause for solemn warning. If the knowledge of Protestant Bible truths means so little in the life and education of modern Protestant children, our worst fears are by way of coming true. When the Bible, as a book of history, direction and precept has so far fallen in the curricula of up-to-date Protestant schools as to make no vivid and important impression on youth's plastic mind than the foregoing statistics would indicate, it is time to take heroic and justifiable means to change the complexion of our entire Protestant educational method and movement. Perhaps this is the place to draw the deduction which naturally arises. If the Klan's idea of placing the Bible the Holy Book of our nation's fathers in its rightful position in school and home is followed out faithfully, the next questionnaires upon the subject of Bible facts will show an altogether improved per cent of children who are able to answer simple Bible questions without difficulty. May it not be true, in view o all this, that we. are all too far from the constitution of our country, the constitution of our church and the constitution of God's world, as exemplified in Hi Holy Book? A "back-to-the-catechism" movement might well- be launched at this sadly auspicious moment. ALL MAIL Should he addressed to The Fiery Cross Publishing Company, and not to individuals. EXTREME CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IS CHARGED

Railroads Among Offenders, Declares President of Humane Association NEW YORK, Oct. 27. Railroads were charged with "absolute heartlessness and disregard in bringing to market the millions of animals slaughtered for human food" by Dr. William O. Stillman, president of the American Humane Association, at the third session of the American World Humane Conference at the Hotel Astor. The number of animals dying in transit in -one vear, ho said was 12,624, and 10,501 more were crippled. "This is shown," Dr. Stillman continued, "by the fact that during one year the railroads were prosecuted by the Bureau of Animal Industry of the department of Agriculture for aoo violations of the federal laws prohibiting rough handling and delay in live stock shipments. Such railroad bodies are a disgrace to the country and it is n riisnrriit tr. Q;ththe intelligence or the humanity of Liie American people that they tolerate this deplorable suffering." Wild West Shows Denounced Speaking of humane work among negroes, F. Rivers Barnwell, a field worker among fellow negroes of Texas, said that the negro when cruel to animals and children was so from ignorance and thoughtlessness and was very receptive of education. Moving pictures, which in the making involved the risk of death or injury to animals, were condemned by Mrs. V. A. E. Dustin of Cleveland. She denounced rodeos and "Wild West" shows and said that every zoo should be inscribed, "Leave heart and feelings behind, all ye who enter here." . Resolutions were passed creating a commission to fight rodeos and "Wild West" shows, denouncing the steel trap and condemning the establishment of hunting clubs near reserves. Dr. Stillman and the other officers of the organization were re-elected unanimously. ALIEN OPPOSITION SEEN AT SUNMAN Head of School BoarJ Bows to Wishes of Israelite Bible Taken From Schools .SUNMAN, Ind., Oct. 29. According to reports that are believed to be authentic, Sam Kirschner, who is said to be the only Jew in the community, and Dr. Robinson, head of the school board, a member of whose family, it is understood, with certain interests opposed to Protestantism, have shown the American population here just who is boss when it comes to placing the Bible in the public schools. It is alleged that Kirschner told Principal Blackmore that if the Bible was read in the schools in accordance with a recent resolution passed by the Ripley county school board, he would take his children from their classes and send them to Cincinnati. When the principal informed Dr. Robinson, he answered, according to reports, that "rather than to cause dissension" he would have the reading of the Bible omitted. It is believed that the whole affair is merely a plot against Protestant Americans, and leaves much food for thought amongi those who would have the ideals of Americans perpetuated. Bank Bobberies Bring Action PARIS, 111., Oct: 27. Stirred by bank robberies and raids on farm homes, 400 Edgar county citizens have organized themselves into a branch of the Illinois Horse Thief Association.

WOONSOCKET, R. I., Oct. 29 After much publicity had been given the fact that the Knights of Columbus and the Masons were to hold a 'love feast" here, it is evident that the affair will never be held, as the Catholic alliance, it is said, has at the last minute flatly refused to have anything to do with the Masons It is understood that the Masons had made elaborate plans for the social gathering and had invited the Knights of Columbus to meet with them, and the invitation, it is said was accepted. could not resist the temptation to humiliate the Masons by refusing to meet with them. The Masonic lodge as a whole, it is understood, did not place its approval upon the meeting to begin with and when news spread that their brothers in Woonsocket were to meet with the worst enemy Masonryhas there were many who could hardly believe their ears. Since it has been reported, however, that the un-American fraternity has turned them down flat, there has been a sigh of relief among the Masons throughout the country, who could not understand the actions of the Woonsocket lodge.
