to be an achievement In itself for a city woman. But when in addition to the multitudinous tasks of the day she writes as beautiful and distinctive a diary as this, the achievement becomes truly exceptional. She has a gift for capturing the peculiarly apt phrase, a habit of journeying down little by-paths of thought difficult to travel, and an imagination capable of seeing an ordinary planet as "an impulsive moon plunging into masses of clouds." A splendid winter with books awaits you at the public library.

ANTI-KLAN SERMON OF DOUBTFUL VALUE

Louisville Pastor Declares Principles Are Those of "Glor-ious-Souled" Americans

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Oct. 29.

Weather seems to mean nothing in

the life of a Klansman when' a meeting is to be held and although the elements threatened last Saturday night, a large crowd was on hand just north of the city to attend the initiation ceremonies of the order. A large fiery cross blazed forth on the grounds, throwing fantastic shadows through the trees and lending an impressiveness to the scene where the ceremonies took place. The candidates, numbering 150, took the solemn oath of Americanism in its light while surrounded by a semi-circle of Klansmen in full regalia. Few nights pass but what motorists on the Lafayette road are attracted by the light of the fiery cross where either the men, women or Juniors are exemplifying the rit

ual to a large class of candidates. Plan for Celebration Plans are now under way for a big celebration at Pimento on the evening of November 3 and there are many other affairs in the making at the present time.

It can be truthfully said that "through the sycamores the fiery cross is gleaming," on tne banks of the Wabash.

not hold the crowd the place of meeting was changed and the speaking took place in the race track oval, which was filled by eight o'clock and the overflow of cars strung along the track.

the principles of the order and found an interested and euthusiastic audience.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 27 Much

comment has followed a sermon de

livered here by Rev. E. L. Powell,

pastor of the First Christian Church, one week ago, and which was antagonistic to the Ku Klux Klan, but

which contained so many compliments to the Klan that persons who heard or read the sermon as published in the newspapers are at a loss to know just what the minister meant. "Permit me to say," declared Rev. Powell at one place in his sermon, "that the principles of the Ku Klur Klan are the principles of highminded, glorious-souled Americanism." At another time the pastor said: "I ''believe, although I do not know,

some of the finest people in every

community are identified with tne Ku Klux Klan. Preachers in this very city stand for it. A class of 2,000 was only recently organized, so I am told, near Elizabethtown. Around Shelbyville in Shelby county is another great class. A friend of mine told me that in Ohio he attended a meeting where 25,000 people1 were gathered." Closing Remarks In closing his remarks. Rev. Powell said: "That is my message tonight, my friends. I do not knowhow many of you belong to the Klan,

possibly a goodly company of you." The sermon 'was published in full in Louisville newspapers despite the fact that sermons favoring the Klan

have been refused. These sermons were delivered by a recognized Baptist minister in this city but were not printed. The discrimination shown has not met with approval by many thousands of citizens of this city. The newspapers here are bit

terly opposed to the Klan and the fact that they show such discrimination only strengthens - the charge made by that organization" that the newspapers will not be iair. Rev. Powell showed the usual inconsistency of all those who attack the Klan, by blaming the organization for the wild acts of Governor

Walton of Oklahoma. Shortly summed up. Rev. Powell believes that the arrogant acts and the spec

tacular career of Oklahoma's chief executive should be laid at the door of the Klan. He does that in the face of the fact that some of the most bitter anti-Klan newspapers in the United States have attacked Walton and declared editorially and otherwise that the Klan had nothing to do with the acts of Governor Walton and that he created a "Klan issue" from thin air in ordet to stop proceedings against him that, in no way concerned the Klan.

Colored Minister at Dixon Receives Klan Gift

(By Staff Correspondent) SHELBYVILLE, Ky., Oct. 29. Six

hundred candidates were initiated into the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan at an open-air ceremonial

which was held at Shelbyville on last Tuesday night. Approximately eight thousand persons were present at the ceremony. The Klansmen came from the Bluegrass, the hills and valleys of the Bear Grass and the lowlands of the Pennyrile to be present at the meeting, which was one of the largest ever held in this section of. Kentucky. The location selected for the meeting was about three miles from this city and was on beautiful grounds.

A large gateway led to the field

where the ceremony was held and

over the gates were two large American flags on which a searchlight played during the evening. The grounds were electrically lighted by

3 plant installed tor the occasion. - """ Tells of Trench Warfare Preceding the initiation Rev. E. H. Lougher delivered an address on Americanism during which he told of some of hi3 experiences in the trenches during the world war. His speech was met with enthusiastic applause throughout. He was introduced by a minister of Shelbyville who opened the meeting by prayer. Booths were operated on the grounds from which food was sold before and after the ceremony. A band concert was rendered earlier in the evening. A Klan quartet also ren

dered a number of selections. The

Adams band of Shelbyville rendered

the music for the event.

The meeting was closed bv all

singing "America" and repeating the Lord's prayer.

DIXON, 111., Oct 29. At the Sunday evening service of the Colored Baptist Church here recently the local organization of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan presented the congregation with an envelope containing a substantial financial gift. About three weeks ago the minister of this congregation received a

letter ordering him to leave the city within twelve hours and the letter was signed K. K. K., which is merely another example of the false propa

ganda being sent out by those who

oppose this American organization. The minister received the gift with

thanks and assured the donors that

it was taken in the proper spirit and

would be used in the proper way. He also said if the Klan is composed of such men and holds such- high principles his prayer to God is for more Klansmen.

Another Glaring Error What is taken by-many to be the most glaring error in Rev. Powell's sermon is where he condemned the

Klan for secret charities. Th.c fact that he quoted much scripture during his sermon and failed to remember that verse concerning the doing of charitable acts in secret, brought out more forcibly the error. Condemning one for charitable acts was thought here to be too far fetched and was taken in bad grace by many who heard the sermon.

MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Oct. 27. Rainy weather did not stop a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan held here last Saturday night and a large crowd was on hand to hear a well-

known speaker give an address on the principles of the great Ameri

can order. Hundreds of machines were parked in the field where the meeting was held and Klansmen in full regalia were numerous about the place. Although the rain fell steadily during the entire time, the intense" interest in the speaker's words kept the crowd before him eagerly listening to catch every word of the powerful message of Americanism. His words were received with much

enthusiasm and he was applauded time and time again. A large class of candidates was initiated in the light of a fiery cross that towered forty feet in the air, and a display of fireworks made a

lurid and impressive spectacle against the black of the cloud-swollen sky. The Oakland county quartet made

otherwise. His admission that the P'.ople of sterling character were identified with the organization; that the growth was very fast; that many ministers were members, and that part of his congregation belonged; more than offset his far-fetched assertion that Governor Walton's acts should be laid at the door of the Klan. His declaration that the principles of the Klan were those of "glorious-souled Americans" had far greater effect than his criticism of the Klan for secret charities.
