THE FIERY CROSS

HYPHENATED GANG INSULT LLOYD GEORGE

Brilliant Guest of America Is Quick to Realize Rowdies Were Not Americans

NEW YORK, Oct. 15. While thou

sands of citizens most cordially re

ceived Lloyd George and his family last week as the guests of the nation, notwithstanding the informality of his visit to this country, a small hand of Irish agitators came down from the headquarters of the American Association for the Recognition of Irish Freedom and started a single file procession from the Municipal 1 building along the eastern" margin of City Hall park, in full view of 10,000 persons who had assembled to witness the visit of the distin-

guished Welshman to the mayor's office. All the paraders were dressed in black and carried banners derogatory to Lloyd George and the English. A squad of policemen Intercepted the marchers, took away their banners of insulting epithets and destroyed them on the spot. WThen the Lloyd George procession

reached Duane-street on the march up Lafayette toward the Waldorf-

Astoria, several scores of men and

women, largely women and palpably

Irish, were standing with banners

on which were printed such lines as "Turn Out De Vatera" and "To Hell

With You."

As Mr. Lloyd George's automobile came abreast of this crowd it surged

toward the vehicle, uttering boos and shaking fists so fiercely that the

mounted policemen considered it necessary to force them back, and then they shook their fists and booed

at the police.

Lloyd George, -who has had an ex

Kended experience with the "Irish

question," was quick to realize that the discourteous display was not the

act of American citizens, but was

the outburst of hyphenated Irish

Americans who would be "agin the government" no matter on which

side of the Atlantic they might hap

pen to be.

ganizations and school societies all

over the country are planning cele

brations of the one hundredth anni- I

versary of the birth of the Monroe Doctrine.

In his message to Congress of De

cember 2, 1823, President Monroe, fifth chief magistrate of the nation,

enunciated what has become one of

the most famous doctrines in law and diplomacy, which has become

epitomized in the succinct phrase, "America for Americans." President Monroe's words, which

have so largely influenced the course of this nation and the world, were as follows: "The occasion has been judged proper for asserting as a principle, in which the rights and interests of the United States are involved, that the American continents, by the free and independent conditions which they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered

as subjects foF future colonization by any European powers.

Differs From America In the wars of the European

powers, in matters relating to them

selves, we have never taken any part, nor dbes it comport with our policy to do so. It is only when our rights are invaded or seriously menaced that we Tesent injuries or make preparation for our defense. With the movements in this hemisphere we are, of necessity, more immediately connected, and by causes which must be obvious to all enlightened and impartial observers. The political system of the allied powers is essentially different in this respect from that of Ametv

lca. This ditterence proceeds trom

that which exists in their respective governments. And to the defense of our own, which has been achieved

by the loss of so much blood and

treasure, and matured by . the wis

dom of their most enlightened citi

zens, and under which we have en

joyed unexampled felicity, this

whole nation is devoted. Shall Not Interfere

"We owe it, therefore, to candor,

and to the amicable relations exist

ing between the United States and those powers, to declare that we should consider any attempt on their

part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dan

gerous to our peace and safety,

With the existing colonies and de

pendencies of any European power we have not Interfered nor shall

interfere. But with the govern

ments who have declared their in

dependence and maintained it, and

whose independence we have on

great consideration and on just

I principles, acknowledged, we could ! not view any interposition for the j purpose of oppressing them, or con- ! trolling in any other manner their destinyr by any European- power, in jany other light than as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposi

tion toward the United States."

OLD MM SPEAKS AT MONTICELLO, INDIANA Large Crowd Hears Stirring Talk Women Also Have Orator Parade at Night

be held in addition to the big parade

which will be a sensation in itself.

A display of fireworks will be

given that will exceed anything yet done in Texas, the committee promises.

Following this, a colossal initia

tion ceremony will be conducted in

the race track and thousands of candidates will be given the oath of

Americanism in full view o those

ceremony another, will take place within the oval in which thousands of women will be taken into the

Women's Organization of the Klan. The day's ceremonies will be concluded with the singing of "America" by the entire gathering. It will be a wonderful day, and Dallas is looking for a recordbreaking crowd.

MONTICELLO, Ind., Oct. 17. Ten thousand persons attended the big

meeting of the Ku Klux Klan here

last Friday to hear "the' old man"

and the head of the Women's Organization speak, and to witness the

big parade held in the evening. It was a large and enthusiastic crovd and "the old man's" address fairly took them by storm. Time

and time again he was interrupted by bursts of applause from the

crowd and prolonged cheering followed the conclusion of his stirring speech. The speaker for the women, who is one of the national heads, also Belivered a brilliant address and was received with great enthusiasm. Dense crowds surged in the center

of town in the evening as the big parade of Klansmen in full regalia

made its way along the line of march and the cheering was contin

in appearance and caused much favorable comment along the lines.

TULSA, Okla., Oct 17. Injection of the Ku Klux Klan into court trials was forbidden by Police Judge Edward Warren here after lie had ab

ruptly ended a debate on the Klan between opposing counsel in a va

grancy case.

I have tolerated a lot of it In

the past," Judge Warren said, "but I now serve notice that Ku Klux Klan arguments are now and forever

banned in this court." Protests Dismissal City Prosecutor W. E. Foreman had protested the dismissal of a va

Newspapers More

Favorable in Pennsy

PITTSBURGH, Pa., Oct. 17. Re

cent indications show tkat the Ku Klux Klan in Pennsylvania is being

viewed more favorably throughout the entire state. Questionnaires have been sent to newspapers in

the state asking their attitude on the Klan organization, the object of

which is to compile a list of publi

cations not unalterably opposed to

the Klan.

Out of the scores of answers re

ceived, only two, the Johnstown

Democrat and the Franklin News-

Herald, signified a policy of not con

sidering any Klan articles sent from

the state office.

The remainder of the answers re

ceived by the state office show that

editors are wililng to devote space to articles proportionate to their

news value.

LAW VIOLATIONS ARE CHECKED BY KLAN

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan., Oct. 17. The local Ku Klux Klan holds two and three meetings each week to take care of the naturalization of new members. Good classes are

represented at each of these meetings. The organization is "getting results" in cleaning up the law violators in this community and is cooperating with the "law" to the fullest extent. Bootleggers and hijackers operating in Oklahoma have found Arkansas City a very undesirable haven. Several noted "crooks"

have been turned over to the peace officers recently by this Klan. The Arkansas City Klan is proud of its organization and its class" of members the better class of members which makes it evident that the "power for good" in the Klan is being felt here.

(Special to The Fiery Cross) KOKOMO, Ind., Oct. 15. Thousands of persons attended the allday ceremonies of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan here last Thursday

in which a number of addresses, a varied musical program and a spectacular parade were among the fea-' tures. The Women's Organization started the ball to rolling In the afternoon with a meeting in Foster park where a well-known woman speaker gave an address on the principles of the organization and was enthusiastically received by her hearers. Two other speakers on the program gave short addresses and received marked attention from the crowd. All orators were interrupted many times with bursts of applause showing the sentiments of those who had come to hear the truth

about the great American movement.

Following the speakers, the famous Logansport quartette rendered a number of songs in their own inimitable style and were cheered again and again by the crowd. Long Parade In Evening The parade in the evening was a good-sized event, led by mounted Klansmen in full regalia and livened with many bands and the sensation

al Kokomo Drum Corps. It covered about a mile in length and as

the long line of Americans in their

regalia marched through the center of the city the cheering and applause

was practically continuous until the last one had disappeared.

A large crowd awaited the parad

ers at Foster park where they disbanded to hear a well-known speaker address the multitudes by the light of a fiery cross, and like the

speakers of the afternoon's program, he was received with an enthusiasm that brought a thrill to the hearts

of all true Americans. Juniors Appear The first public appearance of the Junior Klan came in. the parade where a number ef Juniors rode on a float aa mascots to the drum corps. Kokomo is known as one of the "hotbeds" of Indiana Klandom and a continuous stream of candidates In both the Klan and the Women's Organization are taking the oath of pure Americanism.

WIXFIELF, Kan., Oct. 15. The

meeting at Winfield last week was

one long to be remembered by those who attended. The crowd was variously estimated at from 15,000 to ! 25,000. The scheduled speakers I

failed to arrive and George Alfred i Brown, the author of the new novel, I "Harold, The Klansman," who was in the city, was asked to make the address. Discusses Constitution In his afternoon address Rev.

Brown discussed the consttiution in relation to the citizens of the United States and dwelt at some length on the idea that the constitution is the outgrowth of the experience of the white race in government and that it is a heritage purchased for us at the cost of tears and blood and that the Klan is an organizatiofi that has as one of its great purposes the upholding of the constitution and the

defense of our government against

its enemies. Some time was given

to the answering of arguments that

are being given against the Klan. Not a Political Organization

In his evening address Rev. Brown

discussed the principles of the Klan

and in this connection stated: "The

Klan is not a political organization

It places principle above party

loyalty; the interest of the country above the interest of party; charac

ter and efficiency above fealty to po

litical bosses. The Klan will have a good effect on political parties as

the leaders will soon learn that if their parties command the respect

of Klansmen they must write plat

forms that mean something and

nominate men of ability and princi

ple."
