BURNING OF FIERY CROSS ISMYSTERIOUS Residents of Cohasset Stirred at Blazing Symbol of Ku Klux Klan

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn., Oct. 13. JIas Cohasset, a peaceful little village Ave miles west of Grand Rapids, a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan? This is the question which has agitated the residents of tfiat village, and to a considerable extentthose ot Grand Rapids, since last Saturday night, when a fiery cross was burned at the top of Forsythe hill, Just cast of Cohasset. In Cohasset U has been discussed almost in whispers. Seen by Many People The cross was erected in a closely clipped hayfield, about 200 feet from the main highway, state road No. 8.

It was lighted about 10 o'clock in the evening, and burned for about half an hour. The flaming cross was plainly seen by a large number of people of Cohasset, and by a number who passed on the road, but no one had the courage to investigate.

The next morning it was examined, and found to be made of heavy poles and lumber, firmly bound together with heavy wire. A large amount of burlap soaked in oil or grease had been wired to the cross, for fragments of the burned burlap were found scattered by the wind across the field. Whether the flaming cross was the work of some fanatic, or the

prank of some mischievous boys, or whether it really is a symbol of Klan activities, is not known.

Dor, French Admiralty lawyer and editor of "The Review of Comparative Maritime Law," sailing for home yesterday on the French liner France, said there was nothing In international law to prevent the extension of the three-mile limit to twelve miles to aid the United

States in combating rum-runners off this coast. He said the present limit

was obsolete and had been designated at a time when the best cannon only had a range of three miles. Mr. Dor explained that the present range of guns exceeds eighteen miles, so there is no reason for not extending the limit for csutoms search. He said the United States was justified in searching and seizing vessels which brought liquor within the three-mile limit. T'he

maritime law, he added, is in process of being unified and he thought

foreign nations should co-operate

with this country to enforce prohi

bition.

LAKEHURST, N. J., Oct. 13. Standing under the massive gray bow of the newly christened Shenandoah, formerly the ZR-1, world's

greatest dreaelnaught. Secretary of the Navy Denby here last week served notice on other powers that the United States intends to lead In

military aeronautics.

"Any enemy of the United States,"

Secretary Denby said, pointing with upraised arm to the bulking great ship overhead, "that invites a trial of power with this country will have

its hands full. We expOTt to equal and surely hope to surpass all others in military aviation. - Latest Type "This vessel now is a ship of the United States navy. It represents the newest, Jatest and perhaps the

most terrible weapon of offense. But I pray that it never may have to be used in attack on an enemy or in the

defense of this country."

Mr. Denby's speech, delivered from a flag-draped platform In the gigantic hangar, followed brilliant ceremonies in which the ZR-1 exchanged its prosaic service designation for

the poetic name Shenandoah, meaning "Daughter of the Stprs." at the

word of Mrs. Denby, the .rcretary's wife. Included in the crowd of 5,000 persons who observed the christening and" heard Mr. Denby's challenging address were naval attaches from the embassies of Great Britain, Japan, France, Italy and Brazil. Gov

ernor George S. Silzer of New Jersey, five' admirals and a general of

the Marine Corps as well as scores of officers of lesser ranks, also were present Denby Takes Skf Ride Later the giant dirigible, with Secretary Denby, a family party and high officers aboard, soared over the nearby Atlantic coast at Barnegat Bay, staying aloft for an hour. Half of that time Mrs. Denby was at the steering wheel. The secretary also stood a short watch at the wheel. The landing was made after dusk, the ship nosing steeply downward out of a violet sky, resembling a detached gray cloud earthward bound.

STILLWATER, Minn., Oct. 13. The

Staples ball diamond was the scene

of a dramatic situation Thursday evening when a member of the Ku Klux Klan addressed a large crowd ot

over 1,200 people.

The huge trees, the beautiful

moon, all of which seemed to hover closely and around the lot, gave a

location suitable for any dramatic play. As one stood in the center of the lot there was a feeling of being in a huge amphitheater. For those who are inclined to be

sentimental the beautiful setting of

that occasion would give them the feeling of wanting to forget their troubles, worries and griefs and just drink In the fresh invigorating air and gaze at the moon with intent eyes. Feeling of Mystery The situation seemed to hold the crowd spellbound and when the Klansman appeared in his white robe there was a feeling of mystery that crept over them. For the Klan,"

who have always been more or less

of a mystery, the feeling of mystery

that hung over the place, the beau

tiful moonlight evening, the huge trees, the location, could have not

been excelled. The nickname of

the speaker was also rather fitting, "Twi-light." Two saw horses and a wide board formed the platform from which the Klansman spoke.

OMAHA, Neb., Oct. 13. A new electrical motor, which will save consumers and distributors of electric current more than $100,000,000 yearly, was announced here today by A. H. Timmerman of St. Louis, Mo. By the use of this new motor, which was developed in SL Louis, the use of much of the present excess equipment in power plants and

by consumers will be disposed of, it

was asserted.

A. H. Keohoe, prominent electrical engineer of New York, declared "there seems to be no doubt that this newmotor solves the problem of power utilization which in recent years has been growing steadily

more important and costly." Practically for All Purposes

"Modern methods of power distri

bution by high tension long distance lines makes the use of alternating current essential," Mr. Keohoe

added. "But owing to certain techni cal details, it seemed impossible un

til this new invention appeared to produce an alternating current motor which would be commercially practical for all purposes, and at the same- time utilize the full current that goes into It. There is no doubt that this is a great electrical achievement." Other electrical experts declared the new invention was even more important than the ' invention of the present electric light lamp.
