STRANGE THINGS
What Htrange things the books at the public library tell us! This that two thousand years from now speech will have become unnecessary and thought will be transferred directly from mind to mind. Or so II. O. Wells predicts . in his book, "Men Like Gods." Perhaps you would rather not hear about two thousand years honce, but just about two crabbed old men who are made the heroes of the book, "A Day's Journey," by Maxwell. It is such an absorbing
story of their endnring friendship that wo see them not so much as two quarrelsome old duffers but as two men who have traveled a long day's Journey together with unswerving loyalty, thereby winning the happy privilege of quarreling over golf or clothes, each knowing with fine assurance that he is quite indispensable to the other. So many stories the public library has to tell us!

WORCESTER, Mass., Oct. 6 One of the- most successful 'Klan meet
ings ever held here filled Mechanics,
Hall last night witli an overflowing
crowd of. Americans who were all
anxious to hear more about the fa
mous order. The crowd filled every seat on the main floor and in the balcony of the big auditorium and a crowd estimated from three to five
thousand gathered on the outside but were unable to wedge their way in.
The police department sent 110 officers to the vicinity of the hall while the crowd was gathering,' but
as the mass of people were mostly Americans there was no trouble of
any kind.

i Responsive Audience The speaker proved Tiis ability as a dramatic orator and found a responsive audience. When he recited a poem on Americanism at the conclusion of his- talk, a quartet sang softly from an adjoining room, their voices blending with the tonqs of the reader in such a manner as to create
a lasting impression. The crowd sat spellbound at the conclusion of the poem and for fully a minute, it seemed, there was absolute silence. Then came tremendous applause. The speaker began his address by
saying that his idea of an American was "one who owes his entire allegiance to our flag and country." "No man is a good American," he said, "if his allegiance is divided." A storm of applause and cheers swept through the hall at this remark, showing he had struck upon the sentiments of the entire crowd. The crowd roared with laughter a
few minutes later when he pointed to where a number of newspaper men at, and said: "We have -the press with us tonight." After the laughter had subsided, he said the reporters were not responsible for what went into the papers, and that they were the brains of the profession. Press Can Not Hurt Klan He also said that the press to-
i day was -not big enough to hurt the
Ku Klux Klan and thqt it was fast becoming discredited by the people because thefy could not believe what
they read in it. "That is why the mass of Deonle are nrenarine to lay
I down the old press and support the
Hew," he said. It was learned that TiOO men ha'd made application for membership in the order that day and that local officers have been swamped with requests for application blanks since the meeting. : Owing to the popular demand created by the wonderful meeting an attempt will be made to have the hall reserved one- night each week in order that those who are interested will be able to gather more fre-

SAN Srd1N10v Tex.,' Oct 6. -A mammoth' crowd, estimated at forty tar' fifty. thousand ' neirsois. gathered
"here to attend the. barbecue and
picatc. 'given by the Knights of the Ka Klux Klan, which was on of the largest aaS mb?t sptac4irat'evente ever held 'in Texas: All. plans had: been. completed and
preparations made to hanulea huge
crowd but the number of persons at
tending exceeded the fondest hopes
of the most enthusiastic Klansmen-.
Traffic on "the roads -leading to the speedway , where the ceremonies
were held became jammed with traf
fic early in the day and became
seething mass that took a small army of special traffic officers to
handle.
The Initiation of candidates that
took place in the evening was held in the center of the race track in front of the grandstand and the seething mass of humanity surged back and forth upon the field eager to the see the ceremonies in full. Fifteen Hundred Candidates The candidates, numbering about
1,500, came forward before the altar in a seemingly endless stream and
the gigantic crowd cheered them
wildly -as they passed.
The most spectacular sight of the evening came just before the initiation ceremonies took place, when an aeroplane" with an electric fiery cross arose and circled the field. The cheers were deafening when this took place. The Imperial Representative of the Klan was the main speaker of the evening and his talk was interrupted many times by loud and long applause from the enthusiastic crowd. Taken all in all, it was a wonderful day for Klandom in Texas and when the great crowd began to make their way homeward, it was with the thought that the day had been more than well spent.
GREENVILLE, Tex., Out. 6.
Headed by a .Clansman bearing aloft
the- fiery cross and the Dallas fife
and' . drum . corps, the Women's Ku
Klttx Klan of . Greenville, made their
initial appearance' here last Friday night when they paraded in single
column down Lee street front thq Katy station,, around the courthouse square, thence back up Washington
to the Greenville Klan hall. All
along the line of march the sidewalks and streets were packed, equaled only on a similar demonstration staged by the men's branch
of the order here twice during the last year. Long before dusk thousands of people began to congregate along the line of march and by 7:30 o'clock parking space anywhere on Lee street was at a premium. Traffic became so heavy it was .-necessary to station officers at each corner. Several American flags were cartied by the marchers, members of
the men's organization handling the standards. Several Klansmen were also scattered at intervals u:ough-
out the line of march, while peace
special - officers- headed J' and brought up the"

A float representing the Goddess
of Liberty carrying a number ot the Klanswomen was also in the parade.
Frequent bursts of cheering and ap
plause greeted the women.- . Many of the paraders came -from other points, it was said, by those in charge of the demonstration. Several autos from Dallas brought a large number who participated in the parade, but the bulk of the participants were members of the Greenville organization.
