WASHINGTON, Oct. 6. Colonel

George Harvey, American ambassa

dor to Great Britain, has resigned

his post and is to return to the

United States early in January, 1924. The - State Department -confirmed the resignation of Ambassador Harvey and at the same time announced

that Richard Washburn Child, Amer

ican ambassador - to Italy, also had resigned.

William Phillips, under secretary of state, announced that both resig

nations were in accord with an un

derstanding reached with President Harding and indicated that there was no connection between them and anything that has taken place during the Coolidge administration.

In other words, it was said that

both ambassadors would have re

turned to the United States under the agreement they had with the

former chief executive.
