Crowd Kept on Move by Police Whom Parents Accuse of Being Cause of Death

DETROIT, Mich., Sept. 22. Another crowd of several hundred persons gathered at the home of John Lorenc to watch the funeral procession of Qladyslava Lorenc, his thirteen-year-old daughter, who dlod at a hospital while a police prisoner. The crowd was kept on the move by police, who feared a repetition of a previous near riot, when a mob of

v. between 4,000 and 6,000 persons was dispersed only after police had engaged in hand to hand encounters with some members ol the crowd. Resulted From Mistake Following funeral services, the

Rev. Father Stanley Bortonowskl declared the furore created by the girl's death resulted from a mistake. The parents of the girl charge death was caused by ln3uries suffered at the hands of the police after her ar

rest on a charge of theft. Two men, neighbors of the Lorenc family, viewed the body while intoxicated, according to Father Bortonowskl. They became excited over the cuts made on the body when the post-mortem examination was made, he said, and their statements after they left the house caused the whole trouble.

American meeting here, held by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, students of the Catholic schools formed a circle around the speakers' stand and hissed, cat-called and indulged in boisterous laughter while our national anthem "America" was being sung. Chief of Police McCoy, Roman Catholic and Knight of Columbus, when interviewed by an American earlier in the day, said he would have a man on the grounds to see that order was maintained, it is un

derstood, and the sheriff, who is of

the same stripe as the chief, also promised ample protection. None to .Lead in Prayer

Instead of the crowd being com

posed of Americans, however, it

seemed that the entire force of

Roman Catholics were summoned to

attend'the meet.

They surged about in an ominous way when the speaker asked if some one would lead in prayer and although there were more than twelve priests in the crowd, not one of them offered to give a prayer for an effort that would make America a better place in which to live and rear children. Among the alien opposition was the -usual strong-,arm gang, it is alleged, and one character known as "Soap Box" Jack O'Brien, who seemed-to be one of the foreign loaders, wanted to ask the speaker

questions, and made himself obnox

ious in many ways. The speaker offered to answer his qeustions after the talk was over, but the "soap box" was not to be found at that time. It was the opinion of many that the whole affair was a concerted effort on the part of the police and the alien opposition to use their wellknown rule by numbers against all Americans and was the best eyeopener that the Protestant citizens of this place have ever had. spite of efforts by the avowed enemies of the American public schools to stop the progress of all American movements; regardless of the alien

propaganda in the newspapers, and

unmindful of the fact that the paper they help support refused to handle an advertisement because it came from the only exclusive Protestant American order in the country, a

the stand and gave a stirring address on Americanism, patriotism and the principles of the Klan, which was received with such enthusiasm that he was interrupted many times

during his discourse wiyi bursts of applause. That Americans of Bay City want the protecting hand of the Klan against a foreign power, that seems to do as it pleases here, was evidenced in the most emphatic way, and the "yellow streak" shown by the Bay City Times-Tribune by refusing an advertisement referring to

INTENSE INTEREST AT BENTON HARBOR

Big Crowd Hears Address While Fiery Cross Lights Way Klan Paper Popular

to print m a advertisement.

As usual, the argument he put up

as a defense for his un-American act was pitiful, as is every argument against America being run by Americans. The fact that even the newspapers, institutions that are supposed to give news impartially to the public, are seemingly dominated by a foreign system, is held here to be all the more reason that the" Klan is needed. Spirit of America Continnes

It was pointed out that while the

newspapers as a whole throughout the country have said many bitter things against the great American order, and are believed to be making a concerted effort to keep those in power who swear allegiance to a foreign system, the spirit of America continues in the breasts of the multi

tudes and the membership of the Klan steadily increases. This, it is said, should be conclusive proof that the papers are not in accord with

public opinion. And if not in accord with public opinion, it is asked, then who is responsible for the censorship on articles pertaining to Americanism? These questions and many others of a similar nature were on the lips

of many who attended the big American meet at the armory, where so much patriotism was displayed. There are many requests for meetings of a like nature -to be held in the near future, and a marked interest among the women who attended was also noticeable.

The membership in the Klan here

is showing a steady increase.

A "Declaration of Independence"

It is even said that an Oklahoma

declaration of independence has already been -written, and is being signed by those members of the legislature who object to the revival of those methods of political opposition that were supposed to have been destroyed for good in America when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. The declaration will be published in the press, it is understood, as soon as it has beep signed by a majority

of the house members. That will be

a question of but a short time; not all the members of the house are in the city at present, but a good majority have agreed to sign the declaration, which will be both a statement of the causes for action against the governor and a call for a special session of the house to investigate the charges which are specified. To Cover Wide Scope The charges are not likely to re

fer to the one issue which the governor claims-4s all-dominant, namely, the Ku Klux Klan. Neither will

it deal entirely with the issue which has grown out of the governor's attempt to apply a more drastic form of military rule in Oklahoma than was ever before imposed upon an American state in time of- peace. The charges will almost certainly

specify all the causes of complaint

which have arisen against the governor, particularly his misuse of the pardon power, his attempt to secure political control of the state's schools and his issuance of police

commissions upon an unprecedented scale. Fanciful Allegations Ignored The above charges are those which Governor Walton will have to face and the fact that he has attempted tomake the Ku Klux Klan "the peg on which-, a political bankrupt may hang the tattered habiliments of a grotesque failure while making his

last frantic bid for public favor," will have no bearing on the legisla

ture, which is paying no attention to the wild and fanciful allegations of a power-crazed brain. With the last whisp of public sentiment gone and the legislators ready to convene in spite of Walton's frenzied effort to intimidate them by ordering men, who in reality look

to these same legislators as the voice of the people, to shoot down j the lawmakers, the governor is now . crying, in an agonized effort to get

alien support, that these legislators are "Klaus." In each and every instance where citizens or officials have objected to the insane reigu of Walton, the executive has cried "Klan." Tottering to Ruin A. summary of Walton's moves and allegations would lead one to the belief that practically all the city and county officials in Oklahoma and all the legislators are Klansmen. With

but a few scattering exceptions, Walton's rabid course is opposed by

all in Oklahoma. His career has been one of sensationalism. He has attempted to mow down all who opposed him and with the rising tide of indignation; impeachment proceed

ings loomirfg and public sentiment bitter against him, hS'would take the eyes of the world from his shortcomings, among other things, and confuse the public by hi3 "fight on the Klan." This last move is now nearing its end, the public having seen through his camouflage and the "Reign of WaHon" Is tottering to its ruin.

Klandom came forth In all its glory here last Tuesday night when a crowd estimated at about ten thousand persons gathered at the shore of the lake and heard a stirring address delivered by a well-known speaker who 6poke on Americanism, patriotism and the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. The speaker was given rapt attention by the big crowd and many times was interrupted by bursts of

applause. Although he spoke for

one and a half hours, there were many in the vast throng who wished him to continue. Fiery Cross and Fiery Crosses The burning of a large fiery cross which shed its soft glow over both speaker and audience was cheered when it first burst forth into flame, and made a beautiful sight as its

flame cut into the darkness. Newsboys sold "The Fiery Cross," official Klan publication, on the grounds and the stock of 500 was completely exhausted " in a short time. So great was the demand for the paper that the salesmen say they

Drunk with power, the governor
